THE Clean Coasts Roadshow travelled to Kerry to celebrate Earth Day for a morning of coastal action with Presentation Secondary School Tralee and An Taisce’s LEAF Programme on Banna Strand last week.
Over 40 students from Presentation Tralee joined Clean Coasts and LEAF for a morning of coastal care, learning about coastal biodiversity and ecosystems, planting and harvesting marram grass in the dunes, followed by a beach clean.
On a sunny but windy Wednesday morning the students took to the dunes of Banna Strand to plant and harvest marram grass and learn about how actions like this can help to protect our dune systems, and in turn help protect our coasts and the wildlife that calls them home.

Following this hands-on dune conservation action, the students took to the strand for a beach clean, removing multuple bags of litter from the beach, as well as larger items including a large, corrugated pipe, which students rolled down the beach to the meeting point.

The students were rewarded for their hard work with a hot chocolate and donut treat each.
Elaine Doyle, Clean Coasts Regional Officer for Kerry said, “It was great getting out with the students of Presentation Secondary School Tralee to Banna, to take learning out of the classroom. The students were local and international, all taking time to carefully harvest and plant marram grass and do a beach clean. They were engaged and made it a fun day on a sunny and windy Banna Beach. Their actions might seem small to them but do in fact make a big difference to our coasts.”

The Clean Coasts Roadshow is a series of informative talks and workshops tailored for coastal communities across Ireland, taking place between January and May each year. This initiative brings together individuals interested in protecting their local beaches, seas, and marine environments.
