FOURTEEN transition year students at Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí are embarking on an exciting language and cultural exchange programme next week.

The Gaelcholáiste is partnered with the Martin von Cochem Gymnasium located in the town of Cochem situated in the Mosel region.

The Gaelcholáiste students are in the process of planning the exchange project titled, “Ár nOidhreacht”. From Monday, September 21st they will experience first-hand daily school and family life in Germany.

The programme also includes a series of events, excursions and presentations centred on Irish and German culture.

The Mosel valley is a highly scenic region, famous for its romantic ancient castles, terraced vineyards and home to the best Riesling in the world.

The picturesque town of Cochem boasts half-timbered houses, a riverside promenade, restaurants and inns huddled around a market square. The Reichsburg Cochem castle soars over the town dominating the skyline.

On arrival, the Irish students intend to spread the Gaelcholáiste mission. Gaeilge is, of course an official European language, and this is a wonderful opportunity to teach the German students the cúpla focail!

The Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí students, and their families will host their German friends on the return exchange in April 2027.
