A SERIES of free ‘Soundwalks’, funded by the Creative Communities grant will be delivered in Maharees this summer on July 25, August 8 and August 22.

West Kerry-based Artists Zoë Uí Fhaoláin, Emer Fallon and Silke Michels have created a series of immersive audio experiences, developed from an archive of stories gathered over the past two years as part of the Creative Climate Action project Neart na Machairí and also from new recordings made this year.

The soundwalks will involve walking along some of the most beautiful Maharees walking routes and listening to memories and reflections  of the community on how the Maharees tombolo has changed over generations.

“We’re delighted to be back in Maharees, sharing the beautiful words of its people and the evocative sounds of this place in a series of guided audio walks exploring four distinct areas of the tombolo. We’re really grateful to everyone who shared their stories and can’t wait to share them with new audiences in this special way,” said Emer Fallon.

Mícheál O’Leary, Chair of Maharees Conservation said: “We’re really grateful to Kerry County Council Arts office and Creative Ireland that through the Creative Communities grant we will have this series of events for our resident and visiting communities to enjoy.”

“All of the walks are free of charge, numbers are limited so we advise all those interested to book a spot by emailing mahareesconservation@gmail.com and at the moment there are still a few places remaining. We’re also pleased to see the installation of new signage across Maharees to support the Will It Stay Fine podcast which is free for all to hear at https://mahareesconservation.com/creative-coastal-resilience/will-it-stay-fine.html, by visiting three signposted locations with QR codes across Maharees, or on SoundCloud by searching for  “Will It Stay Fine?”

This seven-episode podcast was funded by Community Foundation Ireland and the Department of Climate, Energy and Environment through the Climate Actions Work fund.
