Men’s Senior Basketball Ireland Hula Hoops Intermediate Cup St. Brendan’s 70 Shannon Jets 35
Last Saturday evening our Senior Men welcomed Shannon Jets to Moyderwell in the first round of the Hula Hoops National Intermediate Cup. Not knowing what to expect from the travelling team we were at near full strength and piled pressure on them from the start of the game. Great work on defense prevailed and ended up with easy fast break opportunities for Fergal O Sullivan and Jason Quirke.
In a dominant opening quarter all 12 players saw some court time. The second quarter saw much of the same with the score at halftime 52-17 thanks to our younger players Nathan Roche, Paul McMahon and Matty Cahalane impressing with some great scores and strong rebounding. The third quarter was like a different game with Shannon finding a rhythm shooting and sluggish play from our team gave Shannon a small bit of hope. New acquisition Wayne Guthrie was hugely impressive and his strong play provided another burst of scores from Cyril Wallace, Conor Donaghy and Rob Mulcahy.
The final quarter was similar to the 3rd as Shannon tried to bridge a 30-point deficit and had a number of players in foul trouble. St. Brendan’s ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 70-35. Captain Darren O Sullivan was delighted with the result and hopes for a long run in this newly introduced competition by Basketball Ireland. Thanks to our U14 boys who helped out with looking after the hall, table officials Claire and Elaine and everyone who turned up to support the team. We are drawn away in the next round away to Portlaoise Panthers who we expect to be strong. Finally, thanks to our new sponsor The Castle Bar for their continued support of sport in the town. Players and Scorers:- Fergal O Sullivan 21, Jason Quirke 12, Cyril Wallace 8, Nathan Roche 6, Paul McMahon 6, Darren O Sullivan

Boys U-16 Div 3
T.K. Vixens 57 St Brendan’s 26
St Brendan’s never recovered from a sluggish start to the new season in the first quarter. Despite some very good general play from Danny Fok Seang, Barry Sugrue, Cian Harris and Michael Dowling. Special mention must go to John Fok Seang, John O’Mahony and Dylan McHugh for their great fighting spirit. Yet again the best display came from Stephen Bowler who finished with a tally of 8. Many thanks to coach Donald and the travelling parents for their support.
U14 Div 3 Pool A Game
Team Kerry Vixens 37 St. Brendan’s 27
St. Brendan’s travelled to Athea for their second game of the season. Athea led from the start and their pressure defence and good use of big men disrupted Brendan’s offence. While Brendan’s played with heart they found it difficult to shake the defence and get good clear shots at the basket. Offensively Sean Dillane, Graham Sheehy, Daniel Bowler and Ryan McHugh played very well. As well as providing strong defence Matthew Hussey and Nelly Olanrewaju and Garry Lynch all got their names on the scoreboard. Liam Kingston, Declan Mangan and Matthew O’Mahony all hussled well but it just wasn’t to be enough and Vixens ran out winners on a scoreline of 37 to Brendan’s 27.
Players & scorers: Graham Sheehy 7; Sean Dillane 6; Ryan McHugh 4; Daniel Bowler 4; Garry Lynch 2; Nelly Olanrewaju 2; Matthew Hussey 2; Liam Kingston; Declan Mangan; Matthew O’Mahony.
U12 Pool 3 Game
St. Brendan’s 16 St. Joseph’s 29
St. Brendan’s went down to St. Joseph’s in a keenly contested U12 Pool game on Sunday morning. St. Joseph’s outscored Brendan’s in the second quarter by 11 points to 4 and this laid the basis for the visitors win. Despite some good performances from Brendan’s players Seamus Lucey, Rory O’Halloran, Shane Kelly and Harry Meahan, St. Joseph’s ran out winners on a scoreline of 29-16.
