Seniors

St Pats claimed the two points at stake in a high scoring, pacy encounter played in dull but very calm conditions in Blennerville, Saturday evening. St Pats registered the first point of the match from a Kieran Hurley free after he was fouled by veteran, Brendán Whelan. St Senans levelled matters after 4 minutes with a point from play by Eoin O’Connell. A couple of points from St Pats by David O’Callaghan and a Kieran Hurley free nudged the home side by 2 but that lead only lasted 4 minutes when Sean O’Connell punched the ball into the net to register the first goal. Their lead could have been stretched but for the timely save by Fizzy in goals for St Pats when Sean Weir was through on goal. Another Kieran Hurley free reduced the tally to a point after David O’Callaghan was brought down at the edge of the square but David Behan responded with a pointed effort from close range. Luke Mulligan levelled once again after receiving a long range pass from David but it was St Senans who began to see a lot of the ball, especially in the middle of the park through Brendán Whelan but they failed to take advantage with 5 wides kicked in this half alone. St Pats regrouped with Brendan Poff, David O’Callaghan and Liam O’Sullivan taking control of matters and a direct result of that saw St Pats press on for more scores with points from Kieran Hurley from a free after 20 minutes and another from David after a quick ball from Brendan Poff to Adrian Greaney, who found David with a pin-pointed pass for him to point from his supposedly weaker right foot to once again lead by 2. However, a fisted effort from Sean Weir and a Sean O’Connell free saw the sides level in what could best be described as a tit for tat scoring match. The point of the half came in the dying minutes of the half from a St Senans kick out that was fisted by Liam Poff onto the path of David , who was now having a stormer of a game to pass to Kieran Hurley who wasted no time in tapping the ball over the bar. The end of the half saw scores at 0-09 to 1-04 in favour of the home side.

The second half saw St Senans win possession from the throw in which resulted in a point for David Foran, who like Kiearn Hurley and St Senan’s Sean T Dillon had Junior All Ieland medals in their pockets from the week before. St Pats goal came just 2 minutes after and was started by Jordan Conway who carried the ball several meters from his half to find Liam Poff who spotted the dashing run of Kieran Hurley to finish with a low, powerful shot into the net. A further point from Willie Hurley streteched St Pats lead even further by five with twenty minutes of play left. The next five points were shared by Willie Hurley, who scored three and a couple by Sean O’Connell, both from frees. St Pats were at this stage contolling the game and a further point from Gary Savage from a St Senan kick out and a Kieran Hurley free saw St Pats lead by eight! St Senan’s Timmy O’Sullivan received a yellow card for his high tackle on Liam O’Sullivan who was boring down the St Senans goal. Shortly after that, he received a second yellow after yet again another tussle with Liam in the middle of the field. St Pats added another point from play from Kieran Hurley, who pointed from the outside of his boot for a point that had people wondering how he makes it look so easy. St Senans threw caution into the wind as they went for broke with nothing to lose and were rewarded with a goal from Eoin O’Connell who received a ball unchallenged at the edge of the square and released a shot that flew past the goalkeeper and defenders alike to reduce the tally to 6 points. With about seven minutes to go, Willie Hurley cleverly rounded his marker to point from 15 meters after receiving yet another great pass from David O’Callaghan. This was to be St Pats last point as St Senan came rallying with three points from Sean O’Connell and a point from Bill Keane but St Pats held out in the end for a victory with full time scores at St Pats 1-18 St Senans 2-12

The Kerry Coast

A formidable document in book form, The Kerry Coast has recently reached the bookshops of Kerry. Castleisland native Tony O’Callaghan has spent many years exploring the length of the Kerry coastline by sea and land, uncovering hidden treasures, listening to local lore, meeting colourful personalities and seeking out the stories behind ancient monuments and historical buildings. He displays an intimate knowledge of the unique challenges facing coastal communities and a deep insight into contemporary life. The Kerry Coast combines this knowledge of both past and present in a thought-provoking and reflective narrative.
Just as Tony has sensitively captured the spirit and determination of local people in his prose, some characters and the beauty of the seascape and landscape have been portrayed in exquisite pen and ink sketches by local coastal artists Alma O’Donogue, Jack Bates and Kevin Frost. The finely-drawn and detailed maps by Tadhg MacGillicuddy allow the reader to trace Tony’s journey ‘ar imeall an domhain’.
Throughout his peregrination, Tony has drawn on the wisdom of local historian and archaeologist Mícheál Ó Coileáin and Gaeilgeóir Éamonn Mac Muiris, where their breadth of knowledge of history, culture and the Irish language further enriches The Kerry Coast. This is not a guide book per se but rather a perceptive observer’s interpretation of places, people and events that have influenced and are impacting on this enigmatic coastline, helping to make Kerry what it is – indefinable.
