Tralee Native To Bring Strawboys Performance To Towns And Villages In Kerry

.
The Strawboys, featuring Tralee native Rob Heaslip, are coming to a town and village near you next week.

IF you see dancers wearing straw outfits dancing around the town or a village near you next week don’t be alarmed.

It’s just Tralee dance artist Rob Heaslip and some friends reviving the cultural tradition of ‘The Strawboys’ with a modern twist, in a vibrant pop-up work across Kerry from July 14 to July 19.

Strawboys is an energetic outdoor performance which blurs the lines between traditional and contemporary dance and music and pays homage to the traditions and costumes of the Wren Boys who once paraded through the streets, towns and fields of Ireland.

Continued below…

.

From Thursday week, July 14 to Monday, July 19, pop up performances of Strawboys will take place all over Kerry in town centres and rural settings such as village squares, carparks and forests.

Unsuspecting audiences will see a luminous strawboy enter a location, before being joined by the rest of the cast to perform a highly percussive and visually work in which the lively Balkans vibes of the music match colour-popping costumes.

A native of Tralee, Rob Heaslip works internationally as a dance artist, choreographer, dancer, movement director and dance teacher.

Strawboys is the second work in Rob Heaslip’s trilogy, exploring rituals of death, life and birth amongst the Gaels, the people on the north-western edge of Europe.

Strawboys features professional dancers Sophie Hutchinson, Favour Odusola, Aneta Dortová and Salma Ataya.

Composers Zoe Katsilerou and Eilon Morris’ joyous music matches the vibrant costumes and woven masks of Scottish Costume Designer Alison Brown.

Strawboys will be performed in over 50 different community sites and venues in Kerry, Clare and Galway in July and August. Each performance lasts 25 minutes.

It is supported by the Arts Council and in partnership with Town Hall Theatre Galway, Galway City Council, Galway County Council, Siamsa Tíre- The National Folk Theatre of Ireland, Kerry County Council, Glór Ennis and Clare County Council.

Professional Performers Invited To Apply For Live Performance Scheme

.

A FOURTH round of the Local Live Performance Programming Scheme (LLPPS) has been announced and applications are invited from people wishing to avail of the funding.

The aim of the scheme is to support employment opportunities for professional performers and technicians across every town, city and county in Ireland and to help underpin the recovery of the commercial live performance sector. This round will support the production of performances from late July–31st October 2022.

Kerry County Council (KCC) invites applications from individual professional performers, professional bands, groups of professional musicians, event producers, promoters, arts organisations, festivals and venues for indoor and outdoor performances throughout Kerry’s five Municipal Districts.

Continued below…

.

KCC also welcomes performances programmed in Local Authority owned cultural and outdoor spaces, for example, ANAM: Killarney Arts & Cultural Centre, the Island of Geese amphitheatre and Listowel Square, and as part of Culture Night (23rd September) and night-time economy.

Mayor of Kerry, Cllr. Jimmy Moloney, has welcomed this funding. “Following a very successful LLPPS3 with funding awarded to 21 applications, which supported over 100 performances, artists and crew, and events from April to June, it is clear that this scheme is an important support to the sector and we look forward to seeing some more great indoor and outdoor performances over the coming months.”

The guidelines and application form are available from https://www.kerrycoco.ie/arts/arts-forms/ and the deadline for receipt of completed applications is 4pm on Wednesday 20th July. Any queries to the Arts Office on 066 7183541 or arts@kerrycoco.ie.

Scotty T meets some Tralee ladies in Hennessy’s back in August 2014.

TRALEE people watching Celebrity Big Brother Final on TV3 tonight might recognise the champion from a wild night in town not so long ago.

Scotty T, real name Scott Timlin, of popular TV series ‘Geordie Shore’, won the competition coming out of the house to wild cheering from fans and watched by millions at home.

It was fairly wild too for the MTV show’s star when he spent a night in Tralee back in August 2014.

Scotty was in town for a youth disco and called to Hennessy’s Bar for a drink.

Ger Hennessy of the Castle Street bar told us at the time that “his manager just said to us if we supply him with free drink he’ll stay for the night.”

“So we put the word out on Facebook that he was in the pub and people, mainly women, started to come down to see him,” he said.

“He was a really cool guy, very down to earth and more than happy to pose for photos all night. People were coming up to him the whole time to take selfies and he was really good with them,” Ger said.

“He’s a real ladies man, the girls were all over him,” said Ger.

“I took Scotty on in a Jager-Bomb competition, I beat him in the first one, but he had me in the next two. He turned to me and said ‘don’t ever take a Geordie on in a drinking game’,” Ger said.

“Him and his manager came in at 10pm and stayed until closing. They actually had no place to stay so I sorted them out with accommodation,” said Ger.

He’ll be an even bigger attraction if he comes back now. Better book a hotel though Scotty.

Guide To Surviving Today’s Super Sunday Of Sport In The Pub

Kerry ETB Surf new Insert
.

Sports beerTODAY is arguably the biggest day in years for Irish sports fans, with the rugby and soccer teams playing vital games.

Many of you will be heading down town on Sunday afternoon to sample the atmosphere in the pubs showing the matches on the big screen.

It’ll be a long evening, so here’s our tips on how to get through it…

1. Get there early

Yeah, I know. Pubs normally try the ploy of advertising a game for 5pm when the kick-off is an hour later, but they’re really only concerned about your punctuality.

This time though, pay attention. Seats will be scarce in the popular pubs, so get down at around 4.15pm at the latest, for the rugby kickoff, leaving half an hour to listen to whoever the TV3 crowd have on the panel.

Dublin Coach Insert 1
.

2. Avoid the rugby bellower

“HEAVE!” “THAT WAS FORWARD!” “IT WAS OUT ON THE FULL REF!”

There’s fan atmosphere and there’s the plague.

Funnily enough, it’ll be the guy who developed an interest in rugby at the age of 35 back in 2006 when Munster won the Heineken Cup, who’ll be the most vociferous in the pub.

Just slide that barstool 20 feet up the bar and you’ll be grand.

3. Get some soakage

Yeah, you may have had half a cow and 15 spuds for Sunday lunch at two o’clock, but now it’s 6.45pm, Ireland have beaten France by 10 points, you’re buzzin’ and it’s an hour to the soccer game.

The brain chants “Pints! Celebrate! Pints!” but common sense better kick in soon or you’ll be a face-down-on-the-bar-counter-drooling-mess by 10pm.

Snack-box time!

4. Share your happiness with loved ones

If things are going really well, it’s good to make contact with loved ones to tell them how you feel and share your happiness on such an amazing occasion. Paul O’Connell’s twitter account is @Paul_OConnell

5. Pace yourself

Things can get tense during matches and you’ll be drinking deep in between plays, while the free, suspiciously extra-salty sausages and chips supplied by the bar at half-time, might encourage you to drink more than you would.

Take it easy, it’s a long night and you’ve work/college in the morning.

6. Resist your primal urges

As appealing as it may seem at the time, refrain from holding an impromptu scrum with the lads on Denny Street at 2am. Not a good look…in court.

7. Capture the moment

This one is for the people who have no interest in either game and have been dragged to the pub for the afternoon/night.

If Ireland are hanging on in both games in the closing stages, it might be fun to film the reactions of the crowd at the final whistle for posterity.

And then send them in to us here at TraleeToday.ie so we can show everyone!

See what we did there?…

YOU’VE seen the Kerry hurlers beat all before them on the field this year, but now they’re facing their toughest challenge yet – on the dance floor.

Eleven couples are taking part in the ‘Kerry Hurlers Strictly Come Dancing’ event to raise funds to send the Kerry panel on a well-deserved holiday after the incredible year they’ve had.

Having won Division 2B again this year, the lads then beat Antrim in a play-off to progress to Division 1B next year. Then they went and won the Christy Ring Cup in June.

Yeah, they deserve a holiday alright!

Continued below…

Kerry hurler, James Flaherty, is one of the organisers of the event.

“We’re just doing a bit of a fundraising towards the holiday – obviously the County Board are contributing too. It’s not often that the Kerry hurlers have a year like we’ve had this year and it’s some bit of recognition for that,” he said.

The lads are planning on heading to Orlando in the middle of November, so the event – which will be held in McHale’s Stretford End Bar on October 17 – coupled with a golf classic on October 24 should send the lads off to the sun.

“It’ll be a great show on the night. A lot of the contestants are Kerry hurlers, with a few distinguished guests and we’ll have a few surprises in store on the night as regards judges,” said James.

“You’ll never again see some of these lads on a dance floor so this is your one and only opportunity to see them!” said James.

Ticket sales are going great so far with over 500 sold. Their hoping to sell at least 300 more before the event which will be held in a specially erected marquee.

James said the reaction from businesses in north Kerry had been phenomenal in terms of sponsorship and he thanked them on behalf of the panel.

Tickets for the event at €20 are available to purchase at Foley’s Gala Lixnaw, Dillane’s Maxol Station in Abbeydorney and Ross’s in Ballyduff. The players also selling them.

THE second of the Secret Cine Club’s open air summer screenings in the Town Park took place on Friday night.

The nights are getting colder so cinema lovers came prepared for the elements with umbrellas, hats and coats as they settled down to watch the classic Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.

Luckily, the weather was kind though – unlike during Raiders Of The Lost Ark when showers put a little damper on the event – with the only light in the sky being the moon…and no sign of spaceships.

Artistic Director of the Kerry Film Festival, Róisín McGuigan, explained why they picked the movie and indeed the other classic movies showing around the county this summer, which included Back To The Future, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Blade Runner and Ferris Beuller’s Day Off.

“When you’re picking a programme, you want it to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. A lot of young people might not have seen Close Encounters… because it was made in 1977 and older people might not remember it. It’s a movie not shown that regularly on TV,” she said.

“We wanted to appeal to everybody, but also to show quality films. If you want fluff you can go to blockbusters in the cinema, but it wouldn’t be our modus operandi to be showing something that wasn’t a good film. Close Encounters is one of those films that would be on the list of movies to see before you die,” she said.

The audience certainly enjoyed it and will no doubt look forward to more free open air screenings in the future.

WHAT an incredible night in the Dome yet again!

A massive crowd, great set-up and terrific entertainment. It was like the Rockies’ county and Munster championship run last year all over again.

The 12 couples in the Austin Stacks ‘Strictly Come Dancing 2015’ outdid themselves yet again as they put on some serious moves – the work of Jackie O’Mahoney was obviously paying off.

Brian Hurley proved a brilliant host again while the judges Tim Landers, Aidan O’Carroll, Honor Hurley and Tim Moynihan had a tough task.

Of course the audience had a big say too, as their votes accounted for 70% of the final decision.

In the end, it was the talents of Laura Flaherty and Jonathan Culloty that impressed everybody the most and they were crowned champions, but it was Austin Stacks who were the real winners on the night with another brilliantly organised production.

See the video of the dancers taking the stage at the start of the night followed by more photos than you can shake a stick at…

Maher Makes Top 10 Most Handsome GAA Players In Paddy Power Survey

Kerry Anthony Maher 1
Phwoarr! Anthony Maher makes the Top 10 best looking GAA players in the country in new survey.

WE all know that Kerry have a ‘honsome’ style of football but a new survey shows there’s a few lookers on the team as well.

Paddy Power conducted a survey to find the best looking GAA players and Ireland and the results are surprising.

One Kerry player makes the Top 10 and the county footballers were voted the 14th most attractive bunch, when 1,000 American women – with no knowledge of GAA or the success of individual players – were shown head shots of the lads and asked to rate them.

Duagh gives us Kerry’s most handsome footballer in Anthony Maher who finished 8th most attractive GAA player in Ireland with Kilcummin’s impeccable gene pool delivering Brendan Kealy in 67th place.

Paul Geaney’s inclusion in 69th place might not make up for him mission out on a starting place on Sunday, but it shows the rugged beauty of west Kerry must be rubbing off on its inhabitants.

No place for the Tralee lads Moran, Donaghy, Walsh and Keane though? Better get the mud masks on lads and invest in some moisturiser.

Dublin hurler, Shane Durkin was voted the best looking with Paddy Holloway of Westmeath and Eoin Cadogan of Cork in second and third respectively.

Our opponents on Sunday, Tyrone, fare much worse than the Kingdom and finished bottom of the pile as the least attractive bunch.

I’d say they don’t mind though and would love to win ugly on Sunday.

Group Theatre Are Royally Prepared For A New Season

Group September 82 Cast
The Group Theatre cast of September 82 are joined by Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh on stage some years ago.

THE Group Theatre Tralee is getting ready for the new drama season which begins on the first week of September, with a production to be staged this November.

The Group is at present rehearsing Mike O Halloran’s new play ‘A Queen’s Speech’ which will be presented in Siamsa Tire on November 27-28.

‘A Queen’s Speech’ will also have previews in another venue prior to the Siamsa Tire run.

Along with ‘A Queen’s Speech’, The Group Theatre Tralee will also run another production and are offering anybody with an interest in drama an opportunity to be part of another production which will be presented after Christmas.

The group, which was founded in 1969, has produced over 100 plays in that time and has been involved in production of classic and contemporary plays, including the works of Oscar Wilde, John B Keane, Bryan McMahon.

It was the first amateur drama group to bring ‘Red Roses and Petrol’ by Joseph O’Connor to the stage.

New works by Muiris McCurtain, and Mike O’Halloran were also staged by The Group.

The Group Theatre presented the world premier of The Rapparees winner of the Eamonn Keane full length play award at Listowel Writers Week.

‘The Praties They Grow Small’ by Muiris MacCurtain was a huge production which filled houses in Siamsa Tire on two different runs, telling the story of The Great Famine.

‘September ’82’, an original play by Mike O’Halloran, was hugely successful and ran in several venues around the country.

If you are interested in joining with The Group Theatre Tralee either on stage or off stage just go to our Facebook page The Group Theatre Tralee and they will get back to you.

There’ll be more news and nostalgic photos over the coming weeks in The Group Theatre Tralee News.

WHEN Benners Hotel reopened its doors a few months ago it brought a breath of fresh air to the Castle Street area of town.

The cafe and gastropub are serving up some excellent fare with friendly service, but some of you may not know that the Courtyard Bar to the rear of the building is an excellent place for every kind of get together.

There are excellent bar facilities opening out into the large courtyard, which is a sun trap for lovely summer days (we’re sure they’ll be here soon!).

Is The Old Oak Premises To Reopen As A Music Venue?

Old Oak 1
The Old Oak on Rock Street. Is it about to reopen?

THERE is speculation that a former pub on Rock Street is to reopen in the coming months as a music venue.

The Old Oak Bar closed 10 years ago and the building has been idle since. However, last week, workmen moved in and there is work ongoing at the premises.

Local sources say the business is to open again as a music venue.

Continued below…

However, when TraleeToday.ie contacted management at the Old Oak in Cork, which owns the business, and asked them if there was any truth to the speculation, they said they are not at liberty to say anything about the future of the Tralee venue for the time being and politely refused to confirm or deny if the rumours were true.

The Old Oak opened in the late 90s and was a very popular live music venue in town with acts like Aslan and Fionn Regan playing there.

WHAT were you thinking Pat?

Tralee man, Pat Slattery, was away for the weekend in Donegal, where he was up at a rally, but he came crashing to the ground when he brashly attempted to clear a fence in one jump.

The seeds of Pat’s demise were sown by his reluctance to carry out a rigorous safety check on the fence before attempting to vault it.

Unfortunately for him, the whole thing was caught on camera by Ray Stack who seemed more than pleased with the outcome (judging by the laughter) and was in no hurry to help untangle his buddy from the barbed wire.

Joe.ie have also picked up the video where hundreds have shared the schadenfreude incident.

The Kilflynn Enchanted Fairy Festival returns on June 27/28.

IT was a massive hit last year with over 3,000 visitors, so it’s no surprise to see the Kilflynn Enchanted Fairy Festival return next weekend.

Celebrating all things magical for children and adults alike, the festival is taking place on Saturday and Sunday, June 27/28.

The Kilflynn Fairy Council have again teamed up with the local Fairies, Elves and magical characters to bring this festival to life for children and families and invite them to join us again for the celebration.

A magical parade will open the enchanted weekend events at 7.30pm on Saturday, with street entertainers and the Kilflynn fairies, the largest elf in the world is also appearing, along with other magical faces, knights and wizards

At the end of the parade, the largest elf in the world alongside the fairies and town crier will use magic to open the sealed treasure chest.

Once the 10,001 year old map is revealed, the elves and fairies will work through the night to print lots of maps for the visitors coming the following day to join in the magic setting of the meadow and fairy trail.

Sunday’s activities take place from 12 to 6pm, and a day of great excitement and fun is guaranteed for all full of creative, magical and enchanting activities for all the family to take part in.

Visitors can get the 10,001 year old fairy map to find the little houses that can only be seen by the strong believers in fairies, elves and magical people.

For one day only all people will be able to see the little homes of the enchanted people, take part in free creative workshops and play in the meadow which is full of entertainer’s, characters, story tellers, music and colour.

Picnic areas are available in the meadow and along the fairy trail. There will also be a local food and craft fair throughout the day catering for older believer.

The beauty of the festival is that it gives families an opportunity to go back to the basics of adventure and a chance to explore the countryside together while fostering the sense of imagination and play for children.

Last year’s festival was a great example of the power and achievement that can happen when the Community of Kilflynn came together to provide a magical day for all.

Our Guide To Getting A Great Father’s Day Gift In Town

Fels Point Fathers Insert 1
.

IT’S that time of year again when we show our appreciation for the dads in our lives.

They’ve done a lot for us kids over the years; changing our nappies (the odd one did this), driving us to school/soccer/rugby/ballet practice, roaring at us on the football field, throwing dirty looks at boyfriends, punishing us for underage drinking/buying our first legal drink, encouraging us in our careers and constantly, constantly giving us money Gawd bless ’em.

So this Sunday, show them how much they mean to you by getting them something from the list below…

CH Chemists
.

1. Aftershave

Nothing says ‘you smell, try to cover it up’ like giving aftershave to your dad. Actually, it’s a pretty practical gift that he’ll actually use, so head down to CH Chemists where there’s a range of top brands at less than half price including Tommy Hilfiger, David Beckham and DKNY.

2. Food Glorious Food

Give mum a break as well this Sunday by taking them both out for Sunday lunch. There’s a great four course meal at the Fels Point Hotel’s stylish ‘Morels Restaurant’ for €25 this Father’s Day, while Kirby’s Brogue Inn is always a winner for Sunday lunch.

4. Take him for few pints

The whole present and card giving ceremony can be a bit awkward for some guys and dads alike, so why not take him out on the lash and do a bit of father/son bonding. After the dinner in the Brogue or Fels Point, wash down the steak with a few pints watching the hurling on the big screen in The Blasket.

There you are now, Father’s Day all sorted!

Well she’s gone and found another one!

Twenty-year-old Niamh and her two friends, Terence Manzanga and Harry English from Dublin City University are taking part in an experiment called Twin Stranger where they made a bet to see who could find their closest doppelganger in just 28 days.

In March, they put out a call to the public  to submit photos of anyone who looked like them and after two weeks Niamh found a woman called Karen who fit the bill .

REMEMBER the guy who upstaged Anna Wintour at the Met Gala earlier this week in his Kerry jersey?

He was later revealed to be Clayton James, a regular visitor to Dingle over the past 25 years, who bought the shirt last year in Garvey’s.

Well Brian O’Connell has posted a video on Facebook of our friend imitating Kieran Donaghy’s famous ‘What D’ya Think Of That?’ interview in the salubrious surrounds of Dick Mack’s in Dingle during the New Year’s Day celebrations.

Judging by the reaction of locals, Clayton, a personal trainer in New York, is a very popular guy back west.

He’s quickly becoming an honorary Kerry legend.

Quarters Set For A Busy Opening Weekend

Quarters 2
Bar men Zygi Lelys and Diarmaid Dunne getting the bar ready in ‘Live Quarters’ on Thursday. Photo by Dermot Crean

WITH the opening of Quarters Nightclub just days away, we popped down to the venue on Thursday to see how things were progressing.

James Flaherty from Lixnaw, along with his Lixnaw hurling team-mates Pat Corridon, Stephen Power and Michael Conway are behind the new venture at the old Fabric building on Godfrey Place, which will see 50 people employed from this Saturday and Sunday.

James was looking forward to getting the doors open this Saturday and said it promises to be great weekend.

“The doors open at 9pm and it’s free entry for the first 250 people, but after that there is an admission price,” said James. “Q14 will be playing from 10pm until 12 midnight in  Live Quarters. The nightclub doors open at 11pm with Basscutters in Head Quarters while ZeroDisco will be in Uptown Quarters and Velvet Quarters will also be open.”

Velvet Quarters, which is a VIP style room, will be filled by the winners of a competition being run on the Quarters Facebook page (here) and Spin South West all week.

Quarters 1
The large wall hanging in Head Quarters.

James stressed that they will be strictly enforcing an ID only policy at the door and Uptown Quarters will be strictly Over 23s. He also said after this weekend, the venue will open three days a week – Friday, Saturday and Sunday – with theme nights and promotions planned for the future.

The final touches are being put to the venue to have it looking its best for the weekend, all under the watchful eye of the General Manager of Quarters, David Quinn.

David, who has been working in nightclubs for the last 30 years including Cubans and The Savoy in Cork, Howl At The Moon in Dublin and clubs in London,  said big names are earmarked for the venue down the line.

David is hoping to stem the tide of people leaving Tralee for other Kerry towns at the weekend and says the opening of Quarters will probably benefit other late night venues in the town.

“One late night venue is no good in a town. The other venues would have no need to worry about us opening, because the more choice people have of places to go, the more people that will come into town,” said David.

So all systems go then for Saturday and Sunday. All they need now is the party people to show up!

New Comedy Club Night Starts In Tralee Next Month

Luke Kelly insert

Comedy night 1

SOMETHING funny is going to happen in The Abbey Inn on April 16.

It’s the inaugural night of The KY Comedy Alternative, Kerry’s new comedy club. It’s all for a good cause, too – all proceeds from the night will go to the Tralee Soup Kitchen.

The night will see local first timers and one or two more experienced stand-ups take to the stage to make people laugh and you can get involved too, if you think you’ve got what it takes to leave a crowd in stitches.

The man behind it all is comedian Seamus Kelly, originally from Kilkenny, but now calling Tralee his home.

Seamus has performed at the Cat Laughs festival in Kilkenny as well as at venues all over the country, previously performing with American stand-up Reginald D. Hunter.

Seamus spoke with TraleeToday.ie about the upcoming event.

TT: What is your reason for starting The KY Comedy Alternative?

Seamus: “To give people a reason to come out at night and laugh – and not to feel guilty about it.

I think nowadays, with the way the world has gone, people are afraid to laugh because they think they’re going to offend someone. I don’t care about offending people.

I often ask someone who’s been the victim of a burglary if they’d like another joke about a burglary or would they prefer to be burgled again.”

TT: How long have you wanted to start a comedy club in Tralee?

Seamus: “Six and a half year, as long as I’ve been living in Kerry. I asked my fiancé when we moved down, ‘Do you think Tralee would be in the mood for a comedy club?’  She said ‘No’, and I listened to her.

Six and a half years ago I wouldn’t have had the courage to attempt something like this – but after going through some personal issues, and through the use of an online alter ego, Frank Hicks, I found the courage to set the ball in motion.

And the response, on Facebook and in real life, has been fantastic.”

TT: Why have you decided to hold the first show in aid of the Tralee Soup Kitchen?

Seamus: “Last year, I saw an article on TraleeToday.ie about the soup kitchen. There was two elderly gentlemen who had to wait for four days to get food. And for some reason, it touched me.

Generally, when someone’s dog dies in China I don’t care – because it’s not my dog and I don’t live in China. But it hit me because of the two women involved – it’s not 100% charity and they don’t have much funds.

They depend on the community. I’ve been living here for a few years and I count Tralee as my home, even though I live in Castlemaine. I want to give something back. I don’t want to charge people for a night of laughter, but what I do want is for people to put their hands in their pockets and give back”

TT: What comedians will be performing on the night?

Seamus: “We have five comedians booked so far, including John Spillane from Limerick, myself and a few first-timers from Tralee. But we are looking for more, anyone who thinks they might have an interest in trying it out. I fell into comedy by accident six years ago, so it could happen to anyone.”

The KY Comedy Alternative will be in The Abbey Inn on the 16th of April, time TBC.

Entry is free and there will be collections on the night in aid of Tralee Soup Kitchen. If you are interested in performing at the KY Comedy Alternative, no matter what your level of experience (or lack thereof), get in contact with Seamus on the KY Comedy Alternative’s Facebook page.

Venues all around the country have been judged on their ambience, staging, sound and lighting facilities, the diversity of their music programming along with the staff and management at each venue and the work they undertake in promoting the venue and its programme of music events.

The awards serve to acknowledge the immense efforts that have been made right across Ireland by various music Venues. The awards also serve to highlight the significant role the venues play in providing a public platform for Irish songwriters and performers.

The Irish Rights Music Organisation (IMRO) is now offering the public the chance to have their voices heard in the 2014 honours roll where one lucky voter will be chosen at random to receive a prize of a ‘Samsung Galaxy Tab 3’.

Voting ends on the second of February so all readers are encouraged to get behind this fantastic local venue and get voting here!

Khloe Kardashian Wears Kerry Man’s Creation To Golden Globes Party

THERE was a Kerry connection at the Golden Globes last night when famed socialite and reality TV star, Khloe Kardashian, showed up to an after party in a gown created by Ballyheigue man Don O’Neill.

The New York-based designer is enjoying huge success at the moment with his THEIA collection, appearing on RTE’s ‘The Saturday Night Show’ and having his designs featured in the Sunday Independent’s Life magazine on Sunday.

Now Khloe Kardashian decided to post this (below) on her Instagram account for her 16.4 million followers.

That should get him a little bit more exposure.

Three Things To Do From Christmas Eve To St Stephen’s Day

Spraoi insert

IT’S almost turkey time, but for anyone who wants to escape the house between now and Saturday, let’s see what you can get up to…

1. Take in the atmosphere

There’s nothing like going to town on Christmas Eve and meeting up with friends and family. The atmosphere is special everywhere, especially in the pubs which shut early so people head home in good spirits rather than fall in the door.

2. Take A Dip

The weather is supposed to be dry and relatively mild this year so why not blow off the morning cobwebs with an afternoon swim in Fenit on Christmas Day.

At 12 noon hundreds of people will make the first of three dashes into the Atlantic. I’m sure the water will be lovely and warm…

3. Walk off the turkey

Join Michael ‘Fox’ O’Connor and friends for the annual Bill Kirby Memorial Walk on St Stephen’s Day. It starts at the Brogue Inn at 11.30am but the fun and entertainment beings at 11am. Music and refreshments will be provided and donations are accepted on the day for Palliative Care in Kerry General Hospital. Sponsorship Cards available from Michael Fox O’Connor 087 9833075.

Five Things To Do Around Town This Weekend

GAA heroes, Christmas jumper parties, Santas running amok? It must be the weekend. Here’s what to do…

FRIDAY

1. Brian And Liam Come To Town!

There’s a bona fide hurling legend in town and he’s bringing the Liam McCarthy Cup with him.

Brian Cody, winner of a gazillion All-Irelands as a player and manager with Kilkenny, will be in the Austin Stack Clubhouse tonight at around 6.30pm to, apparently, become a lifetime member of the Rock club.

An hour later he’s off to the Meadowlands Hotel to present medals to Tralee Parnells youngsters. I expect hurling fans who aren’t members of either club to crash the events for a glimpse and a photo with the legend.

2. What Are You Wearing?

If you haven’t quite finished showing off your festive jumper at work in aid of St Vincent de Paul (click here), head down to annual ‘Christmas Jumper Party’ at The Abbey Inn tonight, where there’ll be enough naff knitwear to make you wish you were colourblind.

3. Paul’s Back!

If your interests lie with the bigger ball, or indeed fashion, then get down to O’Mahony’s Bookshop at 12 noon where Paul Galvin will be signing copies of his book.

Having attracted hundreds to his signing event in early November, Paul’s wrist will get another healthy workout on Saturday.

A special service will take place at the building on Princes Street where people affected by suicide are encouraged to come and put something on the tree throughout Christmas.

After the initial service on December 14, people have until January 6 to place their ornaments on the tree.

A FUN event was held in Ballyroe last night in aid of the three Church of Ireland churches which were damaged in the storms earlier this year.

‘Who Wants To Be A Thousandaire’ drew a good turnout to the hotel where an amazing  €25,000 was raised by the event through advertising and sponsorship.

The three St John churches in Ballyseedy, Ballymacelligott and in Ashe Street were damaged earlier in the year and the funds will contribute greatly to their repair an upkeep.

Everyone attending on the night was in with a chance of winning €1,000 and while nobody scooped the big cash prize, everybody had a great time.

The organising committee was delighted with the amount raised and thanked sponsors, advertisers and everyone else  who made the night such a success.
