THE company which will be creating 30 jobs in Killarney, moved from its Tralee offices because they said the new location offered the required infrastructure and ability to attract and retain talent.
Tralee Chamber Alliance CEO, Kieran Ruttledge, expressed his disappointment at the decision by VT iDirect and said Tralee offers the best resources in Kerry for all businesses.
Yesterday, VT iDirect made the announcement of the jobs which will be created over the next five years in their new location in the Reeks Gateway facility. The US company took over Altobridge in 2014 and moved from Kerry Technology Park to offices at Liber House in Monavalley. They made the move to Killarney few weeks ago.
Replying to TraleeToday.ie’s query about why they moved from Tralee, the US based company issued a statement yesterday evening.
Continued below…
“The office space we had occupied in Tralee was always intended to be an interim solution, identified as such, since it enabled sustained operations as we undertook identifying a space that was most appropriate in supporting our long term location strategy.”
“After evaluating various options across the County Kerry area, The Reeks in Killarney was selected based on several factors, including location, infrastructure, and ability to attract and retain talent. All of the positions that had been working from the Tralee space have been successfully transitioned to the Killarney office, and in the past months we’ve added both additional full-time employees and seasonal interns.”
Kieran Ruttledge wished the company well, but said he was disappointed with the decision.
“Whilst Tralee Chamber Alliance welcome the planned jobs expansion of VT iDirect and their decision to relocate in Kerry we are disappointed that they have chosen to relocate outside of Tralee. We believe that Tralee offers the best resources in Kerry for all businesses and Tralee Chamber Alliance are trying to promote Tralee as a premier business location for Ireland. We wish the company every success in their ventures and hope that they will retain their links with Tralee and draw from the talent pool that the town offers,” he said.

However, the company moved out of that Tralee office a few weeks ago to their new home in Killarney. We put a query to the company as to why they moved from Tralee, but they have yet to respond.
IDA Ireland’s CEO Martin Shanahan said; “This is a unique technology project in a regional location like Killarney. It will be a valuable addition to the telecommunications sector in Ireland, and will be well positioned to respond to continuous growth in demand for satellite technologies in the EMEA region,” said Mr Shanahan.
The project was warmly welcomed by Minister for Jobs Enterprise and Innovation Mary Mitchell O’Connor TD. “Bringing 30 quality technical jobs to County Kerry is very welcome and Killarney will benefit significantly from this investment,” she said.
The new engineering roles that will be created at the facility will focus on software, firmware, hardware, radio frequency and systems engineering technologies.

Almost every day the newspapers are reporting on burglary and rural crime. Up to the 30th of September 2015, 327 burglaries were recorded in Kerry and those are only the ones that were reported. The trends are suggesting that this is set to continue into 2016.”
He continued. “PhoneWatch is encouraging all householders to review their home security arrangements. We no longer live in a society where keys can be left in doors or window left open. IF you’re thinking of a career in An Garda Síochána, then now is a good time to apply.
They have just announced a recruitment campaign for 600 new members in 2016.
“We’ve always attracted way more applicants than available positions,” Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan said today. “We want to build on that, attracting people from every strand of Irish life to help us renew our culture while retaining our best traditions.”
Details of how to apply for the positions are available today at www.publicjobs.ie.
Continued below…
When the moratorium on Garda recruitment ended in 2013 over 24,000 applications were received for an initial 300 posts. That, according to the Commissioner, is partly because of the variety of roles within the service, ranging from Community Policing to Detective work and Forensics , from working with their
Dog Unit to being part of the Mounted Unit. Secondments to overseas police services and to the United Nations also offer career development opportunities. Few organisations can offer such a wide variety of career options, experiences, and training and educational opportunities.
“When I joined An Garda Síochána in 1981, I was one of a tiny minority of women,” the Commissioner said today. “Now, over a quarter of Gardaí are women. I hope that trend continues, just as I hope we get lots of applications from every strand of Irish society. Why? Because we are of the community and should reflect the changes in our communities. We already have different nationalities and backgrounds represented in An Garda Síochána, but not enough. I want people of every background, right throughout the country, to think about joining us and help to make us a beacon of modern policing.”
An Garda Síochána will be working with the Public Appointments Service to reach as many potential applicants as possible through publicity, social media activity and engagement with representative groups.
Applications to join An Garda Síochána must be made through www.publicjobs.ie. The closing date for applications is Tuesday, 5th January 2016.
There are currently more than 500 trainee Gardaí studying for a BA in Applied Policing. Over 290 of these are attested and serving in local communities.
We’re kind of hoping the training methods have advanced since 1964…

The CEO of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Kieran Ruttledge, said: “A recent trip by some Tralee Chamber Alliance members to Westport, Co Mayo inspired us to stage this event. In Westport, they have got it right and, not unlike many other towns, we want to get it right too! We are always striving to learn more about how we can boost Tralee’s profile as the ideal holiday base. To that end, we decided to host a conference at which some tourism experts would share their knowledge and expertise with us and other like-minded towns.”

“In last two to three years have been thinking about opening a second salon, so this certainly wasn’t a rushed decision,” said Cathriona.
“I drove my poor husband mad until I decided in January, that this year my new venture would be to open a sister salon in Tralee town. We have amazing clientele in the Castlegregory salon, and are extremely excited to extend our services to the wider Kerry market with the opening of a new salon in Tralee. I have to thank my husband and the girls who work in the salon for all their help and support in getting the new salon up and running, they have been fantastic. This new salon will help us accommodate more customers and I’m so excited to welcome everyone to the new salon,” she said.
The investment into Cathriona’s Hair Salon in Tralee is almost €20,000 and isn’t your typical salon as Cathriona has designed it to have a boutique and vintage, yet homely feel.
FORTY new jobs, to be situated at a Killarney company, have been announced this morning worth an extra €2.4m to local economy.
In all, 100 new jobs are to be created by Killarney based manufacturing and engineering group, Tricel, with 40 of these to be situated in the company’s headquarters in Killarney.
The new jobs, including graduate positions, will bolster the existing workforce of 250 based in Ireland, UK and France over the next 18 months and will strengthen operations in management, engineering, R&D, product development, marketing and manufacturing.
Exports at the company have increased to over 70% of turnover in just eight years and growth of over 65% in last five years. Tricel currently employs 100 people in Killarney.
This project is supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through Enterprise Ireland.
Tricel is a European leader in the development and manufacture of advanced and specialised composite products from water storage tanks and wastewater treatment systems to construction and building products as well as specialist moulding and filler products for the manufacturing and automotive industries.
The new jobs also mean that the company will invest in more resources to facilitate its expansion across the company and it is hoped that many of the new graduate positions could be filled from local third level colleges in the Munster region.
Originally known as Killarney Plastics which was founded in Killarney in 1973, Tricel also established further operations in UK in 1993 and in France in 2011 from where it won ‘Best Irish Company in France’ award in 2012.
From 2010 to 2013 the company saw growth of 57% with an extra 75 jobs created then and has forecasted turnover to double in the next four years. This will be achieved by the continuing expansion into new markets and through the introduction of new and innovative products into recently newfound markets throughout Europe, Middle East, Australia and the American continents
Tricel Managing Director Mike Stack said: “Our main success and expansion was actually fuelled by the recession in Ireland which had a detrimental effect on our Irish market which forced us to increase focus on our existing UK market and also on further export markets. We bucked the trend and backed ourselves by making a multimillion euro investment in R&D and plant & machinery within this period.
“Amongst our biggest business achievements during this time was the fact in 2007 we exported 5% of our turnover and were highly dependent on the Irish construction market. By 2013 our exports had increased to 70% of our turnover. This investment has led to continuous process and design improvements which have ensured our current and future success. Being a privately family owned business we pride ourselves in supporting the local economy and where possible, local manufacturers and service providers are the preferred supplier choice. We’re very grateful for the assistance we’ve received from the Government through Enterprise Ireland which has really helped us grow our business and exports to help create these jobs”.
The Stack family were keen to point out that a game changer and turning point for the company was when they made the decision to enter the environmental market with a domestic waste water treatment system. As the success of this product became apparent in Ireland they made the decision to manufacture it in modular form which would allow it to be transported overseas at a competitive cost. This eventually led to the decision to assemble the product in their Gloucester factory to service the UK market and to open a purpose built assembly factory in France to service the French market.
