TRIBUTES have been paid after the death was announced earlier today of legendary sport broadcaster and commentator Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh. Micheál passed away this morning surrounded by his family in the Mater Hospital, Dublin.
Minister for Education, Norma Foley said; “I am saddened beyond measure to learn of the passing of Mícheál Ó’Muircheartaigh. He was a legendary figure in GAA circles, but he was a legendary figure in all of our homes and in all of our hearts.
He was synonymous with what it was and what it is to be a true and great Irish gentleman. His unique love of Irish language, culture and sport. His incredible civility and courtesy. His gentleness and his extraordinary compassion and kindness. The very best of us and how we would like the world to see us.”

Born in Dún Síon just outside Dingle, in 1930, his first assignment for RTÉ was to provide an all-Irish commentary on the 1949 Railway Cup Final on St Patrick’s Day; he continued teaching up until the 1980s when he became a full-time broadcaster with RTÉ.
While he had been broadcasting commentaries in English on RTÉ Radio since 1956, Micheál also covered All-Ireland Minor Semi-Finals and Finals in both hurling and football in the Irish language on RTÉ for over 25 years from the inception of television coverage in 1962.
When the legendary Mícheál O’Hehir retired from broadcasting in the mid-1980s, Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh took over as RTÉ’s premier commentator.
Micheál provided commentary on his last All-Ireland Final on Sunday September 19, 2010, when Cork faced Down in the football final at Croke Park. His career in RTÉ had spanned over 60 years.
Kevin Bakhurst, Director-General, RTÉ, said: “Speaking at the time of his retirement, Micheál said, ‘There’s only a while in everything. Sin mar a tá an scéal.’ His wisdom exemplifies his enormous modesty, as the truth is that Micheál was legendary for a reason. He captured the essence of his beloved sports and brought them to life for generations. His love for Gaelic Games was matched only by his love for the Irish language and his native Kerry, and his legacy stands proudly as a seminal contributor to sporting life and culture in Ireland, to the life of his language, and the life of the nation.”
As well as tributes from the GAA world, soccer personality Chris Kamara and Irish comedian Dara Ó Briain have also praised the legend.
Just heard the sad news from @NickyByrne & @Cormac88 that the legendary commentator Michael O Muircheartaigh has passed away. Myself & @JeffStelling spent a cracking week with Meehaul as he educated us on the GAA. We went from grassroots to the All Ireland final. RIP Michael you… pic.twitter.com/8K7LBEwt5W
So sad to hear of the passing of Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh. A man of great wit and charm, he was the voice of the summer to gaels all over the world. He was blessed with a long life and he lived it well, bringing joy to many. I think I can say without contradiction, ní bheidh a…

THE draw has been made for the group stages of the All-Ireland series.
Should Kerry win the Munster final against Clare this weekend, they will face Monaghan, Meath and the runners-up of the Leinster Final, Dublin or Louth.
Should Kerry lose to Clare, they will be in a group with Tyrone, Cork and the winners of the Ulster final, Donegal or Armagh.
GAA president Jarlath Burns and director of games administration Feargal McGill made the draw which was broadcast live on GAA.ie and their social channels this afternoon.

The 16 participating counties for the All-Ireland series were drawn into four separate groups. Teams were seeded based on Championship and League performance and each group features four teams.
Round 1 games involving the Munster finalists Kerry and Clare will be played on the weekend of May 18/19. Round 2 games will be played on the June Bank Holiday weekend and Round 3 on weekend of June 15/16.
Full fixture details will be confirmed by the C.C.C.C in due course, but Kerry’s first game will be a home one.
KERRY will play under lights for the third time this league campaign when they face All-Ireland champions Dublin in Croke Park on Saturday evening for Round 4 of the Allianz National Football League Division 1.
A late point from David Clifford secured victory for Kerry last Saturday night against Mayo in Tralee, but Dublin will offer a whole new challenge in their own backyard.
A victory would set Kerry up nicely in the table for the final three games and leave Dublin struggling, but the Dubs need the points so expect a real battle. The game has a 7.30pm throw-in and you can watch it live on TG4.
KERRY didn’t get off to the best of starts in their bid to defend their Allianz National Football League Division 1 title.
They suffered a narrow defeat to Derry in Tralee last Saturday night and they’ll also have Ulster opposition this Sunday when they play Monaghan in Clones.
The game has an early 1pm throw-in and if you can’t travel you can watch it on the TG4 Player and App while they will have deferred coverage of the game on TV from 5.35pm.
AND so it begins again. After the workouts that were the McGrath Cup games, more competitive fare will be on show in Tralee on Saturday night as Kerry welcome Derry to Austin Stack Park.
Jack O’Connor announced the team for the league opener earlier tonight and there’s a number of Tralee men on the matchday panel.
Dylan Casey of Austin Stacks starts at corner back with his club colleague Joe O’Connor in midfield. Another Rockie, Armin Heinrich is on the bench while Na Gaeil men Diarmuid O’Connor and Damien Bourke can be called on if needed.
KERRY welcomes Derry to Austin Stack Park this weekend to begin the defence of their Allianz League Division 1 title.
The game has a 5.30pm throw-in and a large crowd is expected with a mainly dry evening in prospect, so the town’s hospitality businesses can look forward to a welcome January boost tomorrow night.
Patrons are advised to get into the stadium early, especially if they want to get seats in the stand. They are also asked to park responsibly with parking available for match goers at the large Council-owned space adjacent to The Rose Hotel or at the Kerry College Car Park in Clash.

There are still tickets available for the game at select SuperValu and Centra Stores and on Ticketmaster. The price is €20 per match and student/OAP tickets will be €15.
For this weekend’s Derry game, as demand may exceed capacity, all juveniles (under 16s) will need a €5 ticket and these must be purchased with an adult ticket.
TG4 has today announced its schedule for screening live games during the upcoming Allianz National League season and two Kerry games are on the agenda.
RTE had already confirmed that it will televise Kerry v Derry on Saturday, January 27 at 5.30pm and Kerry v Mayo at 7.30pm, on Saturday, February 17 at 7.30pm, both of which take place in Austin Stack Park.
Now TG4 has confirmed it will be in Croke Park a week later to televise the clash between Kerry and champions Dublin in Croke Park at 7.30pm on Saturday, February 24.

Then the cameras will return to Kerry a week later on Sunday, March 3 at 1.15pm for the Kingdom’s game against Tyrone in Fitzgerald Stadium.
The channel has yet to finalise its schedule, so they may add another Kerry game in March depending on how the season pans out.
KERRY GAA has launched the new home jersey for its teams.
With this jersey, the classic green and gold colours have a deeper tone and is inspired by the jersey of the 1984 All Ireland winning Kerry team.
“This statement piece of combining the vintage elements with modern characteristics embodies the message of Kerry GAA – always building on tradition when moulding future vision,” reads the description on the Kerry GAA website.

“Wearing this jersey instils pride in the community, a sense of belonging for everyone, a pride for our county and a profound admiration for the players who wear it, representing our county with unmatched passion and dedication on the field,” continues the press release.
“We hope that this new jersey will bring success to both the county and the dedicated players donning it throughout the season.”
Kerry will wear the jersey for the 2024 campaign for all home games and will revert to the alternative strip when there is a clash of colour.
The jersey will be available in store in the Kerry GAA Store in Killarney and online through the GAA Store and through O’Neills from Friday.

A PHOTO of Jack O’Connor bringing Sam Maguire to Mick O’Dwyer’ home, taken last year has won a 2022 MacNamee Award.
The winners of the 2021 and 2022 MacNamee Awards were confirmed today. The GAA National Communication and Media Awards are named after the late Pádraig MacNamee, former President of the GAA, Chairman of the GAA Commission (1969-1971) and member of the RTÉ authority.
They are presented annually in recognition of outstanding contributions made by individuals and Association units in the area of media and communications. The presentation of the 2021 & 2022 Awards were delayed due to Covid 19.

Cian O’Connor’s photo of the Kerry legends has won the 2022 Best Photograph.
The citation for the award reads; “They say old friends are best and that is certainly the case here in this beautiful 2022 portrait by Cian O’Connor that shows Kerry manager Jack O’Connor bringing the precious Sam Maguire to the home of the legendary Mick O’Dwyer after their All-Ireland success that season. There is so much going on in an image full of respect and reverence, and it shows the quiet contentment of two great South Kerry football men, one responsible for so much success in history and one responsible for that success continuing as they savour having the Sam back in the Kingdom.”
Also, an article on an iconic moment in the Kerry v Dublin semi-final from that year, won the 2022 National Media Award.
Maurice Brosnan, formerly of The 42.ie, and now of the Irish Examiner, wrote a story on Sean O’Shea’s winning score.
Inspired by photographer James Crombie’s excellent image of the moment O’Shea lined up the free when the snapper pulled focus on the crowd rather than the kicker, Brosnan interviewed Crombie as well as five of the spectators that featured in the photograph.
It was a clever idea that beautifully captured a moment in time whilst giving a great sense of the churning emotions experienced by spectators on match-day.
The MacNamee Awards will be presented by Uachtarán CLG Larry McCarthy at a special ceremony at Croke Park on Friday, October 13, 2023. Details for submitting entries for the 2023 Awards will be announced in the coming weeks.
FRIDAY night is set to be a busy one at Kingdom Greyhound Stadium as they host the annual Kerry GAA Night at the Dogs fundraiser in aid of the Kerry Teams Training Fund.

It’s sure to be a fun night out for all the family with face painting and other kids activities on the night, fabulous raffle prizes up for grabs and music before and after racing.

The 12 winning clubs from each race are then placed in a draw and the first club drawn will receive the top prize of €1,000. Five other clubs will also receive consolation prizes. To purchase tickets click here.
THERE’S just days to go until Kerry do battle to retain their All-Ireland SFC title against their great rivals at headquarters.
Tickets for the big game have never been as scarce, but tens of thousands of the green and gold army will still be in Croke Park to watch the encounter with the Dubs which throws in at 3.30pm.

Darren Kelly reports on a great win for the Kerry U16 girls yesterday against Sligo in Ballinasloe…
Kerry 4-10
Sligo 2-13
Kerry are All-Ireland U-16 B ladies football champions for the first time ever after holding off a determined Sligo resurgence in Duggan Park in Ballinasloe.
Goals from Anna O’Sullivan, Mary Kate Smith, Lori O’Connor and Lisa Slattery were ultimately the difference. But after trailing by 10 points, goals from Saoirse Corcoran and Keeva Flynn helped reduce that deficit to two before O’Connor’s late Kerry free sealed the win.
Kerry took full advantage of the wind in the opening five minutes hitting Sligo for 2-1 and it was a lead they didn’t relinquish.
Continued below…
From the throw-in Smith and Keelin O’Sullivan moved play down the centre before releasing Anna O’Sullivan who scored their first goal.
Donal Doherty’s team also forced keeper Rebecca Davey into a save from O’Connor before the latter set up Smith for a point. But when Lisa Slattery supplied Smith for Kerry’s second goal, there was seven between them.
Sligo finally got off the mark on nine minutes when Lucy Henry was fouled and Keeva Flynn split the posts. They enjoyed their best spell keeping the Kingdom scoreless but only managed another Flynn free in response leaving it 2-1 to 0-2 on 20 minutes.
Kerry ended their drought with Smith and O’Connor tallying to restore the seven-point cushion before Flynn’s third placed ball for Sligo on 23 minutes. Kerry were threatening again as Smith added to her account.

Corcoran did get the Yeats County’s first from play on 30 minutes but Kerry replied with 1-1. O’Connor was put through for the third goal and Sarah Fitzgerald added a point making it 3-5 to 0-4 at half-time.
Sligo started with two Flynn scores but Kerry replied through Hannah Nic Gearailt and O’Connor. And even when Corcoran did make the breakthrough for Sligo’s first goal on 36 minutes, Slattery did likewise for Kerry two minutes later making it 4-7 to 1-6.
But Gerard Mullaney’s charges wouldn’t concede. Flynn registered two placed balls before Corcoran scored from play. And after O’Connor responded for Kerry, another Flynn triple left Sligo just 4-8 to 1-12 down with five minutes remaining.

Nic Gearailt pointed for Kerry before Ellen Giblin sent over a Sligo free. But when Flynn took her pass and scored their second goal two minutes from time, the Connacht county’s supporters were on their feet. However, Kerry held firm with O’Connor converting their final free to capture the crown for the first time.

That’s one of the few positive aspects take from last night’s game in Tralee as Kerry took the points in a turgid match under the lights.
Another was Stefan Okunbor’s performance. The Na Gaeil man was consistent and comfortable in the defence, which was put under pressure at times by a workmanlike Armagh side.
Jason Foley and Barry Dan O’Sullivan were also impressive but the football wasn’t pretty and it took two late points from substitutes Tony Brosnan and Donal O’Sullivan to seal a 0-12 to 0-11 win in front of the 11,603 spectators.
With a trip to Tyrone beckoning, Kerry really needed the victory to put points on the board. Scroll down for photos…

KERRY GAA have announced their latest alternative jersey.
As with the current jersey, it has the iconic Kerry crest as the centrepiece to the design. With the introduction of the colours of navy and blue there is a further nod to traditionalism – the colours of Munster.
In keeping with the home jersey which has individual elements of Kerry’s artistry, history, flora and fauna emblazoned on the jersey, this alternative strip focusses on the stag – a symbol synonymous with Kerry.

As is always the case, Kerry Group are responsible for the sponsorship of this new jersey. The Kingdom will wear the jersey for the first time when they take on Donegal today in Round 1 of the Allianz Football League.
The jersey will be available in store in the Kerry GAA Store in Killarney and online through the GAA Store and through O’Neills from early February.
After the light workouts that were the McGrath Cup games, the Allianz National League returns this weekend and Kerry make the long journey north to face Donegal on Sunday at 1.30pm.
With a number of injuries and some players given a rest after club duties, Jack O’Connor’s charges are not at full strength for the opener, but it’s still a formidable side to face the Ulstermen.
