A THIRD class pupil decided to do something special on Friday, when she got her long hair cut off in aid of the Little Princess Trust charity…and she raised over €800 as well!

Nine-year-old Shannon Quinlan from Ballyduff decided to get the hair cut after seeing how a relative of hers lost her hair a few years ago after being treated for illness.

The Little Princess Trust is a children’s cancer charity, who work with suppliers and hairdressers to offer real hair wigs, tailored to individual children suffering with cancer across the UK and Ireland.

Shannon, who attends Sliabh a’ Mhadra NS in the north Kerry village, went to Tralee native Danny Russell’s Changes Hair and Beauty Salon in Listowel on Friday afternoon and after chopping off the long lock of hair, he decided to give her a new hairdo which she loves.

Shannon’s parents William and Sheila are immensely proud of her, with good reason.  It was such a thoughtful thing to do, so well done Shannon.

IT WAS a special day in Blennerville National School on Thursday when a pupil got her lovely locks chopped for charity.

Third class pupil, Kayla O’Connor, from Curraheen, decided during the summer that she would donate some of her hair to the Little Princess cancer charity and today was the big day.

Special needs assistant at the school and hairdresser, Anne Marie Scott, was chosen to cut Kayla’s locks which she did in front of the junior classes whose eyes were transfixed by the spectacle.

Kayla’s eyes lit up as soon as she saw the cut plaits in her hands – she achieved what she set out to do.

The Little Princess Trust provides real hair wigs to boys and girls across Ireland and the UK that have sadly lost their own hair through cancer treatment. Buckets were on hand also on the day to donate to the charity.

The idea came to Kayla while she was in the hairdressers with her grandmother Liz O’Connor who, as it happens, is also her third class teacher. Watching on also was mom, Niamh O’Connor who couldn’t be more proud of her little girl and her great deed. Scroll down for photos…
