THERE were no tears on Wednesday morning as the new arrivals made their way into their classrooms at Mercy Moyderwell Primary School on Wednesday morning.

The junior infants had been in last Thursday and Friday just to get used to the classroom environment, but Wednesday was their first proper day in school.

There are 49 new pupils across Ms O’Sullivan’s and Ms Geaney’s classes and it was all smiles amongst staff and the little ones when we paid a visit.

“It’s wonderful to be back. I think everyone is a little bit more relaxed than last September, but, at the same time, equally as vigilant regarding safety,” said Principal Moira Quinlan.

“We have all our systems in place and we won’t be letting our guard down. We look forward to having a healthy and a safe, full year in school,” she added. Scroll down for photos…

THE Town Park was awash with noise and colour on Tuesday morning as more than 400 pupils from Moyderwell Mercy Primary school, their teachers  and some parents took part in the annual Christmas fun run.

The initiative was started a few years ago as part of the Active School campaign and has proved a huge success with children and adults donning festive outfits during the fun.

“This is a lovely occasion for the whole school. All the class groupings  and their teachers run together and every child who participates gets a medal,” Caroline Doody, PE coordinator at Moyderwell school, told us when we arrived to take some photos.

“Sometimes, it’s their very first medal. We have a lovely group of parents here today eager to support and encourage the children. Our 6th class pupils and other teachers are always fantastic stewards.

“Santa usually visits to add to the general excitement. It’s a non- competitive event focussing on full participation, so,everyone really is a winner!” Scroll down for photos…

THE Mercy Moyderwell Class of 1979 got together once again to renew friendships and reminisce about their schooldays at The Rose Hotel on Saturday night.

Over six months in the making, the gathering was attended by around 40 ladies out of the 61 graduates from 40 years ago.

Treasa Walsh and her schoolfriend Aine Bulman and set the wheels in motion back in February and a committee of seven — Melanie Harty, Martina Clifford, Treasa Walsh, Ronnie Leen, Patricia Neenan, Catherine Buckley and Aine Ashe (all maiden surnames) — was formed.

“It was a lot of work,” said Treasa. “Each person was given a task — contact details for the ladies needed to be found, a venue selected and a date set.”

After all considerations were taken into account to avoid clashes with holidays, the All-Ireland etc., September 14 was chosen. Then Kerry drew the All-Ireland final.

“I’m afraid around 10 ladies dropped out and went to the replay, but we had around 40 on Saturday night. We set up a TV in the room so we could watch the action,” said Treasa.

The ladies enjoyed a welcome drink and finger food, as they caught up with other to a soundtrack of music from their heyday of the 70s and 80s. Later, the ladies moved to Dott’s Bar in the hotel and enjoyed music from John Buggy.

Treasa’s twin sister Gráinne came all the way from Massachusetts for the occasion while others came from Cork, Limerick and other parts of Ireland.

“I’m glad we did it. It was a night we’ll all remember and a fabulous occasion for everyone. Phone numbers and facebook page contacts were exchanged and people promised to keep in touch,” said Treasa. So maybe they’ll all be back for the 50th in ten years!

Treasa also thanked everyone for making the night possible and The Rose Hotel for being excellent hosts.

PUPILS are Moyderwell Mercy Primary School were lucky with the weather over the past few days as they enjoyed exercises for ‘Be Active Week’.

One of the highlights of the week was the ‘Walk A Mile With A Smile’ on Thursday where the whole school walked from the school, over to the town park, around it and back again.

“It looks great actually with the balloons and it’s lovely as the seniors buddy up with the junior pupils to guide them,” said Principal Moira Quinlan.

“It’s part of a busy week where we had Zumba dancing, junior sports and senior sports day. It’s the culmination of loads of activities during the year as we’re involved in the Active Schools Project which Caroline Doody has co-ordinated and put an immense amount of work into.”

The children have been playing sports, dancing in the mornings and participating in many more activities so the message is getting across that an active lifestyle is very important. With weather like this where else would you want to be but outdoors. Scroll down for photos…
