RIP: Our sincere sympathy to Mary Ross and her family on the passing of her father Patrick (Pat) Ross last week. May he rest in peace.

Scór: Last Friday night saw a group of Na Gaeil supporters make their way to the Community Hall in Milltown for the Scór na nÓg Co final. Representing the club in Dramaíocht & Aithriseoracht were Tom & Sam Gleasure, Bríd O Sullivan, Faye & Isla Fitzmaurice & Caoimhe Daly. Our young thespians were crowned Co champions following a fine performance of ‘The Matchmaker’ written by our very own Playwright-in-Residence Mary Quirke. Normally, County winners would progress to a Munster Final, but due to some Scór reorganisation at National Level, this won’t happen at this time. Thanks and well done to all the kids named above for their hard work over the last few weeks, and to their parents for supporting us in Milltown. Review of our senior mens 2023 season: At the start of the 2023 season the main aims of our senior team would have been to maintain our Credit Union Division 2 status as well as retaining our senior club status. It was a great achievement by our lads to finish the County League in 4th place considering the competitiveness of the division and how depleted our squad was for the whole campaign.

Next up in August was the Senior Club Championship where we were no match for Spa but only lost narrowly to both Kenmare and Templenoe. That left us facing Kerins O’Rahillys in a club relegation game in late October which we won after extra time in an epic encounter. We registered wins over St. Brendans and Dr. Crokes in the Senior County Championship in September before losing to Dingle in Round 3.

Unfortunately Mid Kerry proved too strong for us in the quarter-final but overall our team & management can be very proud of how the year went. Hopefully 2024 will see the return of a number of players who suffered injuries during this season.

Kerry (Ladies) National League Fixtures: Lidl Ladies (LGFA) National League 2024 fixtures: Round 1: January 21st. Dublin v Kerry. Round 2: January 28th. Kerry v Waterford. Round 3: February 4th. Review of u17 boys team’s season: Our year started with our first training session on 16th of November 2022 in Na Gaeil gym. We had 53 training sessions between Na Gaeil gym, Banna beach, Ard Na Lí and Killeen.

Our first match was in the Town /St Brendan’s board league against John Mitchells on the 6th of February 2023 which ended in a draw, Na Gaeil 1-7 to John Mitchells 0-10. We started our successful division 4 county League campaign against Duagh on 18th of February 2023 in Killeen which we won 2-14 to 1-07.

Next up was a home game against Cordal/Scartaglen on 4th of March which ended in a thrilling 1-11to 1-11 draw.

We got a walkover against Ballyduff. Our following game was an away game against Templenoe/ Tousist/ Sneem/ Derrynane in Templenoe which ended in 4-19 to 1-10 win. We then had an away trip against Glenflesk in a do or die match which resulted in a great win for Na Gaeil 1-14 to 2-9.

This guaranteed us a semi-finals spot. We played Cordal/Scartaglen in a playoff to decide placing in League which we lost 2-13 to 1-8. This resulted in us been placed in second spot and resulted in an away trip to Churchill in the semi-finals.

We got a dramatic late goal which gave us a 2-13 to 1-14 win against Churchill. In the final we played Cordal/Scartaglen at Austin Stacks Park. It was a closely fought match which resulted in a brilliant one point win for us on a scoreline of 0-10 to 1-06.

Next competition was the Central Region where we hosted John Mitchell’s on May 1st which we won by 1-15 to 1-9. The following week we took on Castlegregory away from home where we won by 3-21 to 1-8 score line.

Unfortunately we lost the next two fixtures to a very good Castleisland Desmonds side and a semi-final match against Dingle/Annascaul/Lispole. Then there was a break where a number of the players were completing with St Brendan’s in County championship.

Once we resumed we completed in the u17 club championship. Our first match was against Churchill away from home on 9th of September in the quarter finals where we won by 1-09 to 1-07. Unfortunately we lost in the semi-final against Dingle/Annascual/Lispole. Panel:

Review of u18 girls team’s season: There is not a lot of competition for u18 girls but there was a County League which they did very well in. In a very close Division 2 final they lost out to Beaufort.

Review of u15 boys team’s season: Our U15 team had a fantastic 2023 season. The year began at the end of January when training commenced in the MTU under lights on the Astro pitch and Sunday mornings in Na Gaeil.

Numbers were great with thirty-five players in total and this enabled us to have two teams playing competitive football. We entered Co. League, Central Region and also Town League. Our U15A team won the Co. League Division 2 and our U15B team reached the semi-final in their division.

Likewise in the Central Region our A team reached the Division 1 semi-final and our B team were competitive in all their group games. One team was entered in the Town League where we also reached the Division 1 semi-final.

We also reached the cup final in the Lee Strand U14 blitz for the first time ever, losing out marginally to Oranmore from Galway. Our U15 players were also well represented in the St. Brendans U15 championship team where we had thirteen players involved in the panel and four to five regular starters.

They went on to win the Shield in the Co. Championship. Unfortunately in Féile this year we did not do as well as we had hoped but our lads still enjoyed the experience of taking part in the competition.

We had one player starting on the U14 North Kerry Development squad and two in the extended panel. We also had Spar sponsor our new set of jerseys due to the second team so huge thanks to Louis Byrne for that.

We also had very generous sponsors within our U15 group that enabled our players to purchase the new club half zip hoodie for just fifteen euro. Thanks again to our sponsors. As a management team we felt the year was a huge success as every young player got to play competitive football matches with numbers strong enough to support two teams.

Our ethos for the year was to learn by playing and we hope every player enjoyed their year.

Review of u14 girls team’s season: The u14s travelled all over the county with some great performances in the County League. They shared the Shield title with Dingle.

Review of u16 girls team’s season: Our u16s did well in the County League, eventually losing at the semi-final stage. They also had a good run in the North Kerry League where they lost to Kerins O’Rahillys after extra time in the Shield final.

Review of u13 boys team’s season: Our U13’s started their year in the chilly weather in early February in the astroturf in MTU.

Interest and skill standards were high from the start as we began to put a kicking and fast paced game-plan into place.

Great credit to the players who braved Arctic conditions at times, but hopes were high among players and coaches of a successful year.

The boys gathered momentum through the Town/Brendan’s Board competition and entered Phase 1 Division 1 of the county league.

Competition was fierce and we had wins over town rivals Austin Stacks and John Mitchel’s and away to Laune Rangers.

Despite falling at home to Killarney Legion, we topped the group and were deserved winners of the league, captained by Tom Slattery.

In this period the coaches took the boys to the Munster Senior football final in Limerick to watch Jack Barry & Diarmuid O’Connor in action for the green and gold.

In Phase 2 of the County League we struggled with absences and ended up in a Division 2 semi-final against Ardfert. After dispatching our near neighbours, we faced old foes Austin Stacks in the final.

In a virtuoso performance, the boys in green, captained by Eoin Tansley prevailed to take the title. Meanwhile our B team also made the final before falling in the final to a particularly strong John Mitchels team.

Next up was the annual Rose Cup competition where we beat Churchill, Ardfert and Keel/Listry in the group stages. This led to a semi-final against a strong Cork side Douglas. In arguably our best performance of the year, we won again meaning we faced John Mitchels in the final.

In another highlight of the year in a simply sensational contest we took the spoils 3-10 to 3-8 to the delight of winning captain Seán O’Connell.

Our final competition was the Central Region where we again played some great football reaching the final. Unfortunately, John Mitchels got their revenge and took the win by the minimum on the day.

We are incredibly proud of our U13 players this year, their application and effort at training is always first class and all of the players have come on in leaps and bounds this year.

We had 58 sessions and both teams played over 20 games making it an incredibly busy year. Throughout the year, 35 young men wore the green jersey with pride as we travelled the county with our two teams. Many thanks to the coaches who gave up their time to help improve our future stars.

Squad; Ibrahim Altayan, Nathan Anthony, Jake Barrett, Ned Breen, Danny Brick, Jayden Chalke, Ruairí Coakley, Andy Costello, Luca Cronin, Aaron Donovan, Philip Doyle, Ephrem Falvey, Kieran Feely, Joseph Field, Adam Fitzgerald, Eoin Hannon, Paddy Hennessey, Jude Hogan, James Kelly, Corey Kinsella, Xavier Kurovski, Éanna Leahy, Rory John O’Brien, Donagh O’Connell, Seán O’Connell, Eoin O’Connor, Dean O’Leary, Ben O’Sullivan, Conor Reidy, William Scanlon, Daragh Sheehan, Jonathan Sheehy, Roma Skchurin, Tom Slattery, Eoin Tansley.

Kerry (Men) McGrath Cup Football Fixtures 2024: Round 1 (January 3rd) Kerry v Tipperary. Round 2 (January 8th) Limerick v Kerry. The final is fixed for January 19th.

Review of u12 girls team’s season: We had 2 teams of u12 girls this year and they played in the North Kerry and County Development Leagues. It was great to see them competing so well against strong teams and they improved as the year went on.

Review of u11 boys team’s season: Our under 11 boys had a very enjoyable season, beginning in the MTU in January before moving to our home soil in Killeen in March. We had 3 rounds of Go-Games this season, organised by the County Board. These games brought us all around the county, from Moyvane to Kenmare and from Rathmore to An Gaeltacht.

Our boys were great to travel, and we fielded two teams at every game. Our younger boys were lucky enough to be invited to the John Lynch Memorial Tournament organised by Austin Stacks and to the prestigious All Ireland Under 10 Celbridge Tournament, where they held off all competition that came their way.

This group played plenty challenging games along the way, but these tough encounters served only to instil a bit more grit and determination in our players. We had over 30 boys registered at this age group and each boy had made a huge improvement by the end of the season.

A huge well done to a group of players who oozes commitment, talent, skill and croí for football. We look forward to the new season ahead.

Review of u8 and u10 girls team’s season: The u8s and u10s trained every weekend during the year with their coaches helping to improve their skills along the way. They also took part in a few blitzes and played very well in these. The future is bright for the club.

Review of u9 boys team’s season: A good year was had by all with Na Gaeil under 9’s this season. We returned in January to indoor training for the first couple of months as we eagerly awaited our return to the pitch once the weather was a little more amenable.

We regularly had 25 – 30 players at our training session and once we returned to the pitch we introduced a second weekly training session on Tuesday evenings, again with a great participation rate from our young players.

A big thank you to the Behan and McCarthy families, who very generously kitted our under 9’s with their first ever set of jerseys. These were worn with great pride as we participated in many friendly matches as well as our Go Games league around Kerry.

To finish the season off our players played in very competitive blitzes in both UL Sports Grounds and Connolly Park here in Tralee, where both their behaviour and footballing ability was kindly commented on by opposing coaches.

Review of u5 & u7 teams season: The U5’s and U7’s had a very busy 2023. The group started in MTU in January and finished with our awards night on October 27th. It was fantastic to welcome our new squad of U5’s to the club. This group have made huge progress with their skills development.

The under 7’s enjoyed a very successful year, training on Sunday mornings and Thursday evenings. During the year we played Austin Stacks, Ardfert, Ballymacelligott, Churchill, John Mitchels, Kerins O Rahilly’s and St. Pat’s Blennerville. The group has made great strides this year and are already looking forward to returning in January.

RIP: Our sincere sympathy to the family of Sheila Healy, Ardfert who passed away recently. Sheila was a regular card player at our Wednesday night card game. Also our sincere sympathy to JP Fletton on the death of his mother Margaret recently. Our sincere sympathy too to the family of Maria Slattery, Leith who passed away last Friday. May they all rest in peace.

Race Night: Our Annual Race Night was held last Friday night in the clubhouse and was also streamed live on Facebook. This event is a very important one for the club as it is the centerpiece of our fundraising activity for the year.

Our fundraising activities provide the resources to maintain our facilities at Killeen, to pay for equipment, to look after our players, to keep our gym up to standard, to keep our pitch in top condition and to keep our teams on the road at all grades.

The financial support provided by our sponsors is critical for the successful running of the club, so I would like to thank each and every one of you on behalf of all of our members, officers and players for your generous support.

Many of our sponsors are local businesses, and over the next number of weeks you will see advertising signage being erected around our pitch and car park. I would encourage all of our members to take note of these signs and to support these businesses whenever you can.

The life blood of our club is the effort put in by all the volunteers who work tirelessly on and off the pitch to make our club successful.

Our fundraising committee chaired by Terry McEneaney put in a massive effort leading the Partnership initiative with our sponsors, so a big thank you to Terry, Donal, Cathy, Michael, Colm, the two Johns, the two Tim’s and to Eddie for playing their part in raising the funds that will sustain our club through 2024.

A big thank you also to the team that runs the Race Night. To Denis Sugrue for acting as Master of Ceremonies, to Denis, James, Brian and Ciara who looked after the technical side of putting the races on screen and managing the Facebook feed, and to Mary Maunsell who managed the Tote with the help of Joe & John and computed the odds on the races.

Thanks also to Lisa for her help in putting the race program together, and to Mary and the bar staff for their assistance in hosting the event.

Last but not least, thanks to all of our club members and friends and families who sold and purchased horses and to all those who attended on the night to experience a fantastic fun night. Well done everyone. Na Gaeil Abú!

County Final: Congratulations to Mark Bourke who guided Milltown/Castlemaine to victory in the Kerry Intermediate football final yesterday in Austin Stack Park.

Scór: We’ll shortly be starting on our annual Scór journey, and are looking for secondary school kids – up to u/17 – who’d be interested in taking part in drama, recitation, music, singing etc. We’d also be interested in hearing from adults who might like to take part in any of the above too. Please contact Margaret at (086) 0855008 or Mary at (086) 080 6665 if you’d like more information.

Volunteers: The club are looking for people to help out at bingo on Monday nights. If you can spare 2 hours every 5 or 6 weeks then Niamh (087-9863667) would be delighted to have you on board.

U16 Girls: Our girls played Kerins O’Rahillys yesterday in the North Kerry Shield final and were so unlucky to lose by just a single point after extra time.

It was an excellent performance from all our girls in tough conditions. They trailed by 9 points at halftime but fought back brilliantly in the second half and were ahead by 1 point in the 5th minute of injury time.

That was the last u16 game of the year. Many thanks to Eddie, Mike & Meagan for all the time they put into training the girls.

Ladies AGM: Na Gaeil Ladies will hold their AGM next Sunday at 6pm in Na Gaeil. All welcome.

U17 Boys: Our minor lads season ended yesterday too when they lost to Ballymac in the Town Board final in Ardfert.

Tomorrow night’s jackpot will be €4,050. Why not try your luck in our lotto. The links is as follows:https://www.klubfunder.com/Clubs/Na%20Gaeil%20CLG/lotto

Senior Men: Last Saturday our Senior team took on Kerins O’Rahillys in a crunch game to decide which team would retain their senior status for 2024 and it proved to be a cracking match.

From the throw in both teams went at it hammer and tongs and incredibly the first 7 minutes produced 3 points apiece, ours coming from Diarmuid O’Connor, Jack Sheehan and Devon Burns.

Rahillys then reeled off 3 points without reply and Na Gaeil looked in trouble. To their credit though our lads battled back and Jack Sheehan kicked a great point off his left. The hard-working James O’Connor added another to leave just a point between the sides after 18 minutes.

But Rahillys seemed to be finding their scores easier to come by and immediately added 2 points. Dan Goggin got through on goal but unfortunately his shot was saved by the Rahilly’s keeper.

The final 10 minutes of the half failed to produce a score for either team leaving Rahillys ahead by 8 points to 5 at halftime. Our lads needed a good start to the second half and it came via a Darragh Reen free after the impressive Jack Sheehan was fouled.

Dan Goggin soon followed with a point of his own and there was only the minimum between the sides again. Kerins O’Rahillys notched the next score but this was immediately cancelled out by another Jack Sheehan point.

Two frees from Rahillys put them 3 points ahead and with 20 minutes remaining Na Gaeil needed a response. Jack Sheehan kicked his 4th point of the game and then Jack Doyle kicked a beauty from 40 meters.

The next 10 minutes were notable for a number of wides for both teams, including a missed goal chance for our lads as we went in search of the equaliser. It finally came in the 25th minute when Dara Devine converted a free.

But the drama didn’t end there as Rahillys forced a turnover and raced upfield to put themselves ahead once more. Na Gaeil threw caution to the wind and in one final attack Morgan Madden found himself in space and cooly slotted over the equaliser to the huge relief of the many Na Gaeil supporters present.

Extra time started very positively for Na Gaeil with Diarmuid O’Connor winning the throw-in and he was fouled as he bore down on goal. Devon Burns converted the resultant free, putting Na Gaeil ahead for the first time in the game.

A minute later Dara Devine doubled our lead. David Moran pegged one back for Rahillys but James O’Connor restored our 2 point lead with a neat score just before halftime. Rahillys were back level within 5 minutes of the second period restart with 2 frees.

As the tension hit fever pitch our lads got their noses in front again with a point from substitute Jack Bourke following great work by his brother and man-of-the-match Damien, only for Rahillys to equalise once more with a converted free.

In the last minute of extra time a trademark surging run by Diarmuid O’Connor won Na Gaeil a 25m free and Dara Devine held his nerve to pop it over. Rahillys went all out to try to engineer an equaliser but our lads turned them over.

A swift counter-attack saw our captain Kieran O’Donovan carry the ball upfield before passing to Jack Bourke & his precise pass across the square was batted to the net by Dara Devine.

The final whistle sounded soon afterwards and Na Gaeil had bravely retained their senior status. Final score Na Gaeil 1-17, Kerins O’Rahillys 0-16.

Team: Devon Burns, Eoin Doody, Niall O’Mahoney, Jack Doyle, Morgan Madden, Stefan Okunbor, Damien Bourke, Diarmuid O’Connor, Jack Barry, James O’Connor, Dan Goggin, Kieran O’Donovan, Jack Sheehan, Ryan O’Neill, Darragh Reen. Senior Men: Unfortunately our senior team bowed out of the Garvey’s Supervalu Senior County Championship yesterday in the quarter-final at the hands of a very strong Mid Kerry side.

Na Gaeil started brightly with a good score from play from Dan Goggin after good work by Damien Bourke but Mid Kerry dominated possession for the next 10 minutes and notched up 1-7 without reply.

Our lads did have a goal opportunity in the 13th minute following a great catch from Diarmuid O’Connor in midfield but the Mid Kerry goal keeper was out quickly to block Darragh Reen’s shot and the ball was cleared.

Mid Kerry added another point before Jack Sheehan kicked a nice score from 35 meters following a pass from Morgan Madden. Mid Kerry added another point before 2 Na Gaeil wides left the score at 1-9 to 0-2 after 20 minutes.

Then Mid Kerry’s Mike Breen picked up a black card for a foul on Diarmuid O’Connor and our lads had a purple patch. In quick succession Devon Burns converted a free, Darragh Reen added one from play and Jack Barry added another.

As the game entered injury time Morgan Madden won the kickout out near the sideline, played a one-two with Dan Goggin before unleashing a shot past the Mid Kerry keeper and into the net. Mid Kerry managed 1 more point before the half time whistle to leave them ahead by 1-10 to 1-5.

However any hopes of a Na Gaeil comeback were dampened as we registered 3 demoralising wides within 4 minutes of the restart. Mid Kerry tagged on 2 points before Dara Devine converted a free but that was to be our last score until the 32nd minute. Mid Kerry continued to dominate and added 5 points to their total as they ran their bench.

Niall O’Mahony was unlucky not to get a consolation goal in the 30th minute as his shot cannoned back off the crossbar and it probably summed up Na Gaeil’s afternoon. Darragh Reen bagged a point in injury time but Mid Kerry finished the game out with 2 more points to leave the final score Na Gaeil 1-7, Mid Kerry 1-19.

Team: Devon Burns, Eoin Doody, Niall O’Mahoney, Jack Doyle, Morgan Madden, Stefan Okunbor, Damien Bourke, Diarmuid O’Connor, Jack Barry, Kieran O’Donovan, Dan Goggin, James O’Connor, Jack Sheehan, Dara Devine, Darragh Reen. Senior Men: Last Saturday in Dingle our lads took on Dingle in Round 3 of the Garvey’s SuperValu Senior County Championship knowing that they had already secured a quarter-final spot.

The match was preceded by a minute’s silence for the late Bill Doody. The inclement weather made conditions very difficult for both teams but Na Gaeil had the advantage of the blustery wind for the first half. An early attack by Na Gaeil led to a foul on Darragh Reen which Diarmuid O’Connor converted.

Dingle were soon level before a free from Devon Burns put us back in front. Minutes later Devon was involved again, this time making a great save down to his right to prevent a Dingle goal.

Two Na Gaeil wides were followed by a Dingle wide mid-way through the half as the wind continued to make scoring difficult. It was the 18th minute before the next score came and it was probably the best point of the half as Darragh Reen kicked a great score on the run from 35m out.

Na Gaeil’s lead was then increased to 3 points when Diarmuid O’Connor added another free however it was Dingle who finished the half stronger and added 2 frees and a point from play to level the game at 4 points each at halftime.

Dingle started the 2nd half in similar fashion to how they ended the first and picked off 2 points to go 6-4 ahead. A point from play from the industrious Diarmuid O’Connor reduced the deficit to the minimum again but that was as close as we would get as Dingle proceeded to bag 3 points in 3 minutes, 2 coming from frees.

Another free from Diarmuid O’Connor brought it back to a 3 point game but before we could get our hopes up Dingle added another to their tally.

Na Gaeil then enjoyed a period of dominance with Jack Doyle, Niall O’Mahony & Damien Bourke doing well at the back but unfortunately our shooting left us down and we only mustered 3 wides from our attacking efforts.

That seemed to knock the stuffing out of our lads for a while and Dingle soon hit back with another point to extend their lead to 5 points with just 6 minutes remaining. James O’Connor and Tomás Ó hAiniféin in particular were working hard in attack and it was the latter who kicked our 3rd point of the half.

Then a Dara Devine free reduced the gap to 3 but Dingle showed their experience and saw the game out, adding 2 more points before the end. Final score was Dingle 0-13, Na Gaeil 0-08.

Team: Devon Burns, Ruairi O’Sullivan, Niall O’Mahoney, Jack Doyle, Luke Barrett, Morgan Madden, Damien Bourke, Diarmuid O’Connor, Jack Barry, Kieran O’Donovan,Tomás O’hAiniféin, James O’Connor, Jack Sheehan, Darragh Reen, Jack Bourke. Senior Ladies: Our senior ladies lost to Southern Gaels yesterday in their final group game in the Senior County Championship and unfortunately that result means they miss out on a semi-final spot.

Senior Men: Last Saturday in Killeen Na Gaeil took on Dr. Crokes in Round 2 of the Garvey’s SuperValu Senior County Championship.

The game started in ideal weather conditions and it was the Crokes who were fastest out of the blocks.

Their first attack brought a great save from Devon Burns as he tipped the ball onto the crossbar and the follow-up shot was blocked by a Na Gaeil defender before a Crokes forward eventually put the ball across the goal and wide.

It was an early let off for Na Gaeil but Dr Crokes maintained their pressure and secured the game’s first point on 4 minutes. A Devon Burns free levelled the game before a free for Dr Crokes put them back in front after 8 minutes.

Immediately afterwards Dr. Crokes squandered another goal chance much to the relief of the locals. Diarmuid O’Connor was coming more into the game and kicked a super point from 40 meters out to level matters at 2 points apiece.

Dr. Crokes continued to enjoy a lot of possession and added another point from play. Both teams had a wide each before another Dr. Crokes point put them 4-2 ahead. Another powerful run by Diarmuid O’Connor saw him take on the visitor’s defence and kick another great score, this time off his left boot.

The tigerish Na Gaeil defence were beginning to get to grips with the Dr. Crokes forwards at this stage and a brilliant steal from Stefan Okunbor in the corner back position led to our next score, a point from Jack Sheehan.

A minute later it was Jack Sheehan again who put Na Gaeil ahead for the first time scoring a lovely point after a clever dummy solo. Dr. Crokes were soon level again but Tomás Ó hAiniféin added the last score of the half in injury time to leave Na Gaeil ahead by 6 points to 5 at the break.

Dr. Crokes were level within a minute of the restart but our lads continued to drive forward and were rewarded when Damien Bourke was fouled and Devon edged us ahead once more from the resultant free.

The as ever hard-working James O’Connor popped up with the next score to extend our lead to 2 points but the Crokes replied immediately with a point of their own.

Jack Barry won the next kickout and launched a 40m pass into Darragh Reen who did brilliantly to call the mark and subsequently kicked a valuable point. At this stage the weather had deteriorated with persistent rain now falling.

Super work again in defence by Jack Doyle and Niall O’Mahony led to another excellent point from Tomás Ó hAiniféin and with 17 minutes remaining Na Gaeil led by 3.

Dr. Crokes continued to enjoy plenty possession but squandered numerous opportunities before eventually adding a point to their tally on the 17 minute mark.

Then it was Na Gaeil’s turn to waste some great chances as 2 potential goal opportunities went abegging in quick succession.

Dr. Crokes continued to lay siege on our goal but some excellent defending by our lads and more poor shooting kept them at bay until the 34th minute when Tony Brosnan did finally manage to grab what would be the game’s final point.

The final whistle was greeted with great jubilation as the win means the lads have secured a place in the quarter-finals.

In the meantime they will face Dingle (away) next Saturday in Round 3 at 2pm.

Senior Men: Last Friday night in Austin Stack Park Na Gaeil took on St Brendan’s in the opening game of the Garveys SuperValu Senior County Championship.

Na Gaeil were boosted by the return of Stefan Okunbor to the starting 15 and he was to play a prominent role throughout the game. St Brendan’s won the throw-in but it was the impressive Darragh Reen who gave our lads an early lead before St Brendan’sfollowed up with an equaliser.

Our full-forward line were causing problems for the St. Brendan’s backs and a point apiece from Dara Devine (free) and Jack Sheehanextended our lead to 2 points.

A free from St Brendan’s in the 10th minute cut the gap to a point but incredibly that was to be their last score until the 50th minute.

Good work in our defence kept St Brendans at bay and led to another Darragh Reen point. Neither team managed a score for the next 12 minutes but it was Na Gaeil who made the most of the final 5 minutes to add 3 points without reply, leaving us ahead at halftime by 7 points to 2.

The early stages of the 2nd half were nip and tuck and it was the 7th minute before the next score. A St. Brendan’s attack was broken down by Stefan Okunbor and the ball was quickly moved downfield to Diarmuid O’Connor on the run and he kicked a beauty from 45m out.

Damien Bourke then came storming into the game and kicked a point to put us ahead by 7 points. Over the next few minutes Na Gaeil introduced subs Dan Goggin, Jack Bourke and Kieran O’Connor and all 3 showed their worth.

St. Brendan’s converted a free but then Na Gaeil struck for their first goal. Stefan played the ball to Diarmuid O’Connor who bore down on goal before passing the ball across the square to Jack Bourke who calmly sidestepped the St Brendan’s keeper and finished to the net.

St. Brendan’s were finding it very hard to get through the dogged Na Gaeil defence but they did convert another free to leave the score 1-9 to 0-4 with 7 minutes remaining. The tie was soon well and truly over as a surging run by Damien Bourke ended with him billowing the St Brendan’s net for our second goal.

A great steal in midfield by Jack Barry led to a Kieran O’Connor point and a few minutes it was Kieran again who was at the end of a swift move to volley the ball past the helpless St Brendan’s keeper.

Both teams exchanged points before the final whistle to leave the final score Na Gaeil 3-11, St. Brendan’s 0-5.

Team: Devon Burns, Stefan Okunbor, Niall O’Mahoney, Jack Doyle,Eoin Doody, Morgan Madden, Damien Bourke, Diarmuid O’Connor, Jack Barry,Kieran O’Donovan, Tomás O’hAiniféin, James O’Connor, Jack Sheehan, Dara Devine, Darragh Reen. Senior Men

Our lads travelled to Templenoe last Saturday night for Round 3 of the Kerry Petroleum senior club championship. The game was played in near perfect conditions with a slight breeze favouring Na Gaeil in the first half.

Templenoe got the scoring underway with a point from the throw-in but 2 points from Darragh Reen saw us lead 2 points to 1 after 5 minutes.

Templenoe added a point to level the game before Jack Barry made a crucial save off the line to prevent a Templenoe goal. A third point from Darragh Reen following another excellent long ball out of defence by Diarmuid O’Connor saw us ahead once more but Templenoe converted a free to level the game again.

Another pin-point ball out from defence, this time from Jack Barry, found Darragh Reen and he added his fourth point of the half.

After a couple of wides from Templenoe our wing back Morgan Madden was at the end of a slick move and he rifled over an excellent point to extend our lead to 2 points. Both teams added a point apiece before the break, ours a free converted by Dara Devine, to leave the half-time score Templenoe 0-4, Na Gaeil 0-6.

The immense Darragh Reen started the 2nd half in similar fashion to the first half when he fisted over his 5th point of the game to stretch Na Gaeil’s lead to 3 points.

The teams then exchanged points before a super individual point from Jack Sheehan moved us 4 points ahead with 14 minutes gone. Templenoe replied with a point before our outstanding corner-back Jack Doyle kicked a beauty to restore our 4 point lead.

Soon afterwards Templenoe were reduced to 14 players following an off-the-ball incident but they kept in touch with a pointed free. Templenoe were then lucky not to be reduced to 13 following an incident that saw Jack Doyle having to leave the field with a head injury.

A point by Diarmuid O’Connor on the 30 minute mark restored our lead to 4 points again. Templenoe added 2 points in the 33rd and 34th minute and Diarmuid O’Connor slotted over a free in the 36th minute which appeared to be the insurance score.

However a minute later Templenoe added another point leaving Na Gaeil with a dangerous 2 point lead. In the 38th minute Templenoe won a free in around the 45m line. The kick fell short into the hands of their full-forward about 15m out.

He turned and fired a shot through a crowded square and unfortunately for us it bobbled past Devon and into the net. It was a cruel result for our lads who played some great football on the night. Final score Templenoe 1-10, Na Gaeil 0-12.

Team:Devon Burns, Ryan O’Neill, Niall O’Mahoney, Jack Doyle, Morgan Madden, Eoin Doody,Damien Bourke, Jack Barry, Diarmuid O’Connor, James O’Connor, Tomás Ó hAiniféin, Kieran O’Donovan (c), Kieran O’Connor, Dara Devine, Darragh Reen. Senior Men: Killeen was the venue last Saturday night for Round 2 of the Kerry Petroleum senior club championship and Spa were our opponents.

Having lost against Kenmare Shamrocks in Round 1 the pressure was on our lads to get a positive result. Spa played with the aid of the breeze in the first half but it was Na Gaeil who took an early lead through a Jack Sheehan point from play.

Spa replied immediately with a point from their impressive centre-back Shane Cronin. This same player proved to be a thorn in our side for the duration of the game.

On 3 minutes it took a great save by Devon Burns to prevent a Spa goal and fortunately for us they sent the resultant 45 wide. But Spa continued to dominate possession and added 5 unanswered points as our defence struggled to clear their lines.

Mid-way through the half Dara Devine got his first point of the afternoon, following some good work by Jack Sheehan and moments later Diarmuid O’Connor brought our total to 3 points.

Then Dara Devine slotted over a free to reduce the gap to just 2 points and Na Gaeil were right back in contention. Spa replied with another point from play and then came a huge moment in the game.

Na Gaeil tried to play the ball out of defence but a misplaced pass was pounced on by Spa and they raced through to bury a goal. That score seemed to deflate our lads and Spa quickly added 2 more points to extend their lead, 1-9 to 0-4, with 5 minutes remaining in the half.

Worse was to follow though as Spa added another goal just moments before the halftime whistle to leave them with a comfortable 11 points lead at the break. Spa started the 2nd half with pace and added another point to their tally.

Then things went from bad to worse for Na Gaeil when Jack Sheehan picked up a black card and having already received a yellow card in the first half he was sent to the line.

Spa added another point before a Darragh Reen mark & a point from play by Jack Barry brought our total to 6 points. Two more Spa points were cancelled out by scores from Dara Devine (free) & a great point from Jack Doyle as the game petered out to its inevitable conclusion.

Kieran O’Connor was unlucky not to grab a goal as his goal-bound shot was tipped over the bar by a Spa defender but Spa had no such problems at the other end and managed to bag a third goal with 2 minutes remaining.

A last-minute point by Dara Devine left the final score reading Na Gaeil 0-10, Spa 3-14.

Team: Devon Burns, Ryan O’Neill, Niall O’Mahoney, Jack Doyle, Kieran O’Donovan (capt), OisÍn Maunsell, Damien Bourke, Jack Barry, Diarmuid O’Connor, James O’Connor, Tomás Ó hAiniféin, Jack Sheehan, Morgan Madden, Dara Devine, Jack Bourke. Any boys or girls interested in joining the U7’s group should contact Shane Moriarty 086 8380434 or Conor Boyle on 087 7540281. Training continues Thursday 24th at 6:00pm. We play Churchill in a Go-Games match at homenext Sunday, August 27th.

U11 Boys: The under 11s had a great training session yesterday morning in Kileen. The boys practised kicking and blocking before a nail-biting game to finish the session. We look forward to travelling back to An Ghaeltacht this Thursday for our final Central Region game of the season.

U13 Boys: Congratulations to the Na Gaeil U13’s who won the Rose Cup yesterday. Na Gaeil hosted 8 teams in Killeen on Saturday with our boys drawn in a tough group with Ardfert, Churchill and Keel/Listry.

Conditions were tricky with a strong wind making scoring difficult. In our first game we beat Ardfert 1-6 to 0-4 with Andy Costello, Joseph Field and James Kelly on the scoresheet.

Next up was Churchill where we won 3-9 to 1-3, this time Tom Slattery, Eoin Tansley and Eoin Hannon registered scores. In the final group game, despite a nervy finish we beat Keel/Listry 0-9 to 1-3.

Winning the group meant we played a well fancied Douglas team, who had been very impressive in winning their group. In a sensational first half display with the aid of the wind we led at half time 0-10 to no score.

We survived the inevitable comeback in the second half to book our place in the final with a final score-line of 0-14 to 1-4.

After a busy morning in Na Gaeil we packed up and headed for Ballyrickard for the final against John Mitchels, who beat Galway outfit St. James in a cracking semi-final. Both teams know each other well and all the players served up incredible scores, drama and excitement for the sizeable crowd that had gathered.

Na Gaeil started brightly but couldn’t shake off Mitchel’s and we went into the break 1-3 apiece. Again we started the second half well with Joseph Field, Eoin Tansley, Andy Costello and Dean O’Leary to the fore.

With the action at fever pitch a quickfire from 1-1 from Mitchels had us down a point with 3 minutes remaining. A clinical finish from Nathan Anthony was quickly followed by Eoin Tansley calmly rounding the keeper to put the gloss on a magnificent team performance.

Captain Seán O’Connell lifted the cup and ticked all the boxes in a great speech!! A huge thank you to all the parents who kindly volunteered their time and grub for the visiting teams.

The club was complimented on our hospitality from visiting teams and all the credit for this goes to the parents of our young players. Kerry Ladies: Unfortunately the Kerry Ladies lost to Dublin yesterday in the All-Ireland final. They have made great strides this year so hopefully they can go a step further next year.

Commiserations to the Na Gaeil players involved namely Mary O’Connell, Eilís O’Connor and Deirdre Kearney along with Laura Fitzgerald who is the team’s goalkeeping coach.

Senior Men: Our lads took on Kenmare Shamrocks yesterday in Fitzgerald Stadium in the first round of the Kerry Petroleum Senior Club Championship.

The teams were evenly matched for the first 20 minutes leaving Kenmare leading by 5 points to 3, our scores coming from a Dara Devine free and 2 long range points from Diarmuid O’Connor.

However, Kenmare saw out the half stronger to lead by 9 points to 5 at halftime. Kenmare extended the gap to 5 points early in the 2nd half, before each team added 2 points to their tally.

Devon Burns converted a 45 to reduce the gap to 4 points but then in the 40th minute Na Gaeil lost Jack Sheehan to a black card.

Despite their numerical disadvantage our lads played some good football and got a point back through Oisin Maunsell. Soon Na Gaeil were level. A long ball in from Diarmuid O’Connor found Jack Bourke and he cooly slotted it past the Kenmare keeper to level the game 0-12 to 1-9 with 15 minutes still remaining.

Kenmare got their noses in front again scoring 2 points before a Kieran O’Donovan point kept us in touch.

A Dara Devine free levelled the game but only briefly as Kenmare finished strongly and added 3 unanswered points in the final few minutes to run out winners on a scoreline of Kenmare 0-19, Na Gaeil 1-13.

Next Saturday our lads will host Spa in Round 2. Throw-in is fixed for 7pm. Please come along and support the team if you can.

U15 County Championship: Unfortunately the St. Brendan’s Board u15 team lost to Mid Kerry in Round 2 of the County Championship last Wednesday night. Their next game will be against Castleisland District this Wednesday in John Mitchels at 7pm.

U11 Boys: The boys played Kerins O’Rahillys last Thursday in the Central Region competition and both teams put in strong performances. Next Thursday the boys will be away to Laune Rangers.

U13B Boys: Our lads put in undoubtedly our best performance of the season to lose narrowly to a very good Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane team last Tuesday night. We couldn’t have been prouder of all 19 lads who donned the jersey on the night and gave their all.

The home team’s greater fitness in the last 5 mins won them the game out scoring us 1-4 to 1pt. Special mention to our four U11s who came with us on the night and to a man played great. Final score Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane 2-18, Na Gaeil 4-6.

U18 Girls: Good luck to our girls who will play Ballyduff tomorrow night (Tuesday) in the County League semi-final in Killeen at 6.15pm.

The first game is at 10.30am.

Kerry Ladies: The excitement is building ahead of the Kerry Ladies battle with Dublin next Sunday in the All-Ireland final. Best wishes to Na Gaeil players Mary O’Connell, Eilís O’Connor and Deirdre Kearney along with Laura Fitzgerald who is the team’s goalkeeping coach.

Incredibly its 30 years since Kerry last won the title so hopefully the experience of having played in the final last year will stand to the girls and they’ll be successful.

Kerry Ladies u18s: Congratulations to Cara Gannon and the Kerry LGFA u18 team who beat Sligo in the All-Ireland U18B final last Saturday in Nenagh. Kerry won by 2-6 to 1-6.

U7 Boys & Girls: We had 18 kids in our U7 group last Thursday evening. We had a few fun games of crazy solo, kick and pass, hold and hand pass followed by a tightly contested game. The kids are all looking forward to our club camp this week.

U11 Boys: Our under 11s had a very energetic session yesterday morning in Killeen. The boys practiced kicking and hand passing before a shot of 5-a-side mini games where every boy got plenty ball time. Well done boys. The boys are due to host Kerins O’Rahillys next Thursday, Aug. 10th at 6.30pm.

U13 Boys: U13 Central Region semi-final result: Na Gaeil 0-9, Austin Stacks 0-6. For the sixth time this year the town rivals locked horns. With the teams knowing each other so well, both teams cancelled each other out for the majority of the game.

Austin Stacks started the better and led 4 points to no score with the half almost up, until Eoin Tansley registered our only score of the half to leave us trailing 4-1 at the break. The second half was all Na Gaeil and from the tenth to the eighteenth minute we outscored our hosts 8-0.

Aaron Donovan was playing his best football of the year while Andy Costello was reliable as ever on frees. Nathan Anthony was playing a pile of ball at wing forward while Ibrahim Altayan and Seán O’Connell were marshalling the Stacks forwards excellently.

Well done to all, we await the winners of Ardfert and John Mitchels in the final. Team: Ben O’Sullivan, Dean O’Leary, Seán O’Connell, Éanna Leahy, Jake Barrett, Ibrahim Altayan, Philip Doyle, Eoin Tansley, Tom Slattery, Nathan Anthony, Aaron O’Donovan, James Kelly, Joe Field, Andy Costello, Donagh O’Connell, Eoin Hannon, Jonathan Sheehy, Jayden Chawke, Rory John O’Brien, Danny Brick.
