STUDENTS at a local school have shown their artistic side in a new calendar launched this week.

St Ita’s and St Joseph’s School 2025 Calendar showcases the work of the pupils and will raise funds for much needed sensory equipment in the school.

“We have 500 calendars and we’re hoping to sell them to hundreds of homes so they can see the wonderful work the students do,” said teacher Gillian Moriarty, who is co-ordinating the project.

.

“The project came about from one student, Brendan Culhane,” explained Gillian. “In our class last year we recognised that he was extremely artistic and we wanted to give him a platform to showcase his work. We realised we needed the support of the other kids and it took off from there.”

“We have representation of about 70 children in the school in the calendar out of the student body of 125. The work was completed  last year by students between January and June and was a collaboration between the SNA, teachers and the students.”

“We’re very proud of their work, they are extremely talented  and loved the process.”

The calendars can be purchased in the school — €10 for one, €18 for two and €25 for three. They will be available  in selected shops in Tralee in November. They can also be purchased  at the school Christmas fair on December 6.

A LOCAL man has raised over €6,000 to help a local school buy a new bus.

Eoghan Galvin ran the Cork Marathon on Sunday in aid of St Ita’s and St Joseph’s effort to buy new bus for transporting children on school trips and activities. He presented the cheque to staff and pupils at the school on Friday.

“It was to raise funds for the bus which would be a great boost for the kids here. They do fantastic work at the school and a new bus would be a great amenity going forward,” said Eoghan, a teacher in Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne, who thanked everyone for their generous donations.

.

Eoghan took on the challenge in memory of his mother Anne O’Keeffe Galvin who passed away in 2016 after a battle with cancer and was Deputy Principal at St Ita’s and St Joseph’s.

This wasn’t Eoghan’s first time taking on fundraisers in memory of his mother. Back in May 2020 he ran 200k in the month and raised €15,000 while last year he raised over €16,000 for Kerry Hospice and Kerry Cancer Support Group with a 45k run from Tralee to Dingle.

Principal of St Ita’s and St Joseph’s Grace Sheehan expressed her gratitude to Eoghan.

“We’re delighted with Eoghan’s efforts. His mother Anne was deputy principal here and it’ lovely to see Eoghan supporting the school. We now have over €35,000 raised now and money is still coming in,” said Grace.

AFTER all the rain we’ve had during ‘Confirmation season’, the sun shone brightly over Tralee on Saturday for First Holy Communions.

There were two ceremonies taking place at St John’s Church and Our Lady and St Brendan’s Church with families arriving in the fine weather for the special day.

Mercy Moyderwell pupils received the sacrament from Fr David McGovern at St John’s while Fr Amos was the celebrant at St Brendan’s for the Listellick and St Ita’s and St Joseph’s School pupils.

Thanks to their teachers, all the children were well prepared for the day and no doubt enjoyed the celebrations afterwards with their families. Scroll down for photos. TO BUY HI-RES COPIES OF PHOTOS PLEASE CALL 087-9384810…

A MOMENTOUS day in the lives of eleven students arrived on Friday when they graduated after years of education at St Ita’s and St Joseph’s school in Tralee.

The students, dressed in their caps and gowns, were joined by their families and school staff for a lovely ceremony to mark the end of the time at the school in Balloonagh.

“They’ve been fantastic students over the years and brought a smile to my face every day,” said Principal Grace Sheehan.

.

“We’ll find it hard to see them go but we’re delighted for them. They’ll move on to further education and training,” she added.

The students had a tough couple of years with COVID restrictions but came through it.

“The first lockdown was shock initially and we put our heads together to facilitate online learning. During the second lockdown we had a mixture of students at home and at school as some were not able to attend due to health issues, but eventually they all came back,” she said.

A day to remember for all then and best of luck to the students in their future endeavours. Scroll down for photos…

“We are committed as a Government to supporting students with special educational needs and I believe that this additional accommodation will go further to support the children of St Ita’s and St Joseph’s. It was a pleasure to be able to meet with the remarkable staff of the school today especially the special needs assistants who are providing an invaluable service to these children. This extension is a mark of the great work, service and diligence that this school provides to the area and I would also like to congratulate them on their 50th anniversary.”

DOUBLE Special Olympics medal winner, Gary O’Sullivan, received a rapturous welcome when he returned to his alma mater in Tralee on Friday morning.

Just a few weeks ago, the Castleisland man was in Abu Dhabi for the games where he claimed the gold in the shot put and silver in the Men’s 400 metres walk in Abu Dhabi.

Gary was happy to come back to the St Ita’s and St Joseph’s School in Caherslee  which he graduated from in 2006, but said it was very different to when he attended.

Continued below…

.

“It’s a bit weird coming back, because they have added new buildings, but I recognise some of the teachers here,” he said.

It’s been a hectic time since he came back from the Special Olympics and he said he has been recognised and asked for photos on the streets of Castleisland thanks to his endeavours.

Gary spoke to the current pupils and told them it doesn’t matter if you win or lose once you take part and try your best.

Another pupil, Sarah Missorici from Athea, won six medals at local and national level in Special Olympics gymnastics and also displayed her medals on the day.

“It’s absolutely brilliant to have Gary back and to have him speak to the pupils about what can be achieved. He’s an inspiration, said Deputy Principal of St Ita’s and St Joseph’s School, Louise McCarthy.

“We kept the pupils informed of Gary’s progress and we have a lot of pupils from the Castleisland area who knew what Gary was doing,” continued Ms McCarthy.

“Everyone in school donated money and we’d really like to thank Angel and Nicole from Kerry ETB for doing the dyeing,” said teacher Ellen O’Rahilly. It is hoped the final total raised will be just under €200.

IT was “back to school” for members of Born To Run Tralee Marathon Club on Friday as they presented a cheque for over €2,000 to students and staff at St Ita’s and St Joseph’s primary and post primary special school.

The popular running club raised €2,058 from their sell-out 40 mile ultra marathon and relay event in July, which will go towards the development of a vocational centre including a hairdressing training facility, woodwork room and school café to support pupils with mild learning disabilities meet their full potential.

Speaking with TraleeToday.ie, club secretary Liam Horan explained that the decision to donate all profits from the 40 mile event to St Ita’s and St Joseph’s was a no-brainer for the organising committee and perfectly in tune with the ethos of the running club.

Continued below…

.

“Born To Run Tralee Marathon Club has always been more than just a running club. We see ourselves as part of the wider community providing the opportunity to take part in a healthy, fun pursuit to those that may not be comfortable in a mainstream athletics club,” he said.

“For four years now we have delivered a quality event without any regard for making a profit. But this year, with the generous support of the local business community, we were able to add an extra dimension to our race by raising much needed funds for a tremendous service at St Ita’s and St Joseph’s, that supports their students to be the best that they can be in a world that doesn’t always embrace the most vulnerable in our community.”

Teacher Aoife O’Connor- who is also a member of Born To Run- said that the staff and students were “delighted” to accept the generous donation from the club.

“We as a school community fundraise for our students on an ongoing basis. Presently the school is undergoing an extension to develop a vocational centre and we are very much dependent on fundraising for its completion. We are very grateful for all the support given to us by Born To Run,” said Aoife, who also thanked race sponsors including Weathermaster Kerry Ltd and Prestige Marketing for the support that made the final fundraising figure possible.

Student of The Year went to Lauren Walsh, while Sports Awards were presented to Colin Kerins and Sean Nolan. Parent, Fiona Hyde, received a special award for her amazing fundraising efforts for the school.

There’s a lot of activity at the school with a vocational centre currently under construction, partly funded by proceeds from the Ring Of Kerry Charity Cycle.

“We’re looking to put a hairdressing, beauty salon, nail salon, electrical, plumbing and mechanics units to look at students getting involved in trades so that they’ll get skills in employment and we’re looking at expanding in that area of education. It’s going to take a couple of years to work on,” said Ms Sheehan.

Fundraising will have to be undertaken to bring it to fruition over the coming years. Exciting times ahead for a great school. Scroll down for photos…

THE students and staff at St Ita’s and St Joseph’s School in Balloonagh were delighted this week when a local family made a kind-hearted donation to the facility.

Martin Moore and his wife Deirdre from Caherslee, presented the money at the school – which caters for young people with special needs – on Friday morning, in front of all the students.

So why did they decide to make this generous gesture?

“Well I got certain monies as a bequest, so I looked around and asked ‘who can I help?’,” said Martin. “I wanted to help the education of younger people and in particular people in most need of assistance. This would be something very close to myself and Deirdre’s heart and the person that gave the bequest as well,” he said.

“I know Aoife [O’Connor, teacher] from running and I know the good work which is done in the school and we’re delighted to be here this morning. It was very touching for us. Hopefully we’ll be able to do something else in the future,” he said.

Acting Principal, Eileen O’Shea, thanked Martin and Deirdre for the donation.

“We’re delighted as it will help to defray the costs of the many excursions the students go on, which is a big drain on our resources. It takes the pressure off and we can go more places with the children,” said Eileen.

The school also received €110,000 from the Ring of Kerry Cycle earlier this month, which will be put to good use.

“We’re still in the process of finishing off the multi-sensory room and play area and we hope to go ahead now and build a woodwork room. Hopefully we’ll get more funding for that,” said Eileen. If anyone would like to donate or hold a fundraiser for the school, get in contact with the school by calling 066-7125237.

The special school for children with mild and general learning difficulties  opened the extension in May which has two new classrooms. They are seeking funds to furnish these classrooms, and purchase ICT equipment and equipment for the multi-sensory room and the new playground area.

Equipment for the multi sensory room and the playground is very expensive. To kit out a multi sensory room could cost from €50,000 to €250,000. Some of the pupils are non-verbal and use iPads to communicate. The school also wishes to support these pupils in our school through improving their ICT access and equipment.

Multi Sensory Environments improve the development of thought, intelligence and social skills. Multi Sensory Environments offer people with cognitive impairments and other challenging conditions the opportunity to enjoy and control a variety of sensory experiences.

The fundraiser is guaranteed to be a great night out for all the family.

A TRALEE mum, who decided to raise funds for new equipment for a school extension, handed over a cheque for nearly €2,500 yesterday.

Joan O’Keeffe from Castlewood Park has a daughter attending St Ita’s and St Joseph’s school at Balloonagh.

The school opened a new extension in May, with two new post-primary ASD rooms, a multi-sensory room, social space, play area and staff room. However, funds were needed for multi-sensory equipment  and ICT equipment for the autism classes.

Joan decided to organise a 5k Walk4Autism event and table quiz in Gallys to help towards the costs. The event was held on July 12 and hundreds took part in the walk, with a great crowd turning up for the quiz later that night.

Joan handed over the cheque to the school on Tuesday.

“We’re very grateful to Joan for her fundraising efforts. You can be sure it’ll be put to good use here in the  school,” said Anne O’Keeffe, Vice-Principal at St Ita’s and St Joseph’s.

Joan and the school wished to thank everybody who helped organise, provided facilities, spot prizes and helped out on the day to make the event such a success.

IT looked like the weather could break at any minute as the crowd started to gather for the fundraising ‘Walk 4 Autism’ event taking place at John Mitchels GAA grounds on Sunday afternoon.

There were definitely a few nervous looks from those taking part, with a few thinking it wise to throw on a rain jacket before setting off on the 5km fundraising walk in aid of new equipment for classrooms for the St Ita’s and St Joseph’s school (see previous story here)

The day was the brainchild of Joan O’Keeffe and she was definitely in full organisational mode yesterday as she flitted between different groups of people.

The atmosphere was definitely one of excitement as the start time of 1pm approached with music playing through the speakers near the door and groups of children excitedly running around the grass.

The 1pm start time came and various runners and walkers made their way to the line where Joan thanked everyone for coming out on the day, before counting down from five to set everyone on their way for a fine way to spend the afternoon.

STUDENTS from St Ita’s and St Joseph’s school made the big step towards adulthood today as they celebrated their graduation from the school, where they no doubt have experienced many great memories over the years.

The school hall was full of family, friends and staff members as they looked on at the 12 young men and women who were there to celebrate (one student was absent on the day).

Fr Patsy Lynch delivered the ceremony which featured a special few words, not just for the class of 2015, but also for the deputy principal Anne O’Keeffe who is celebrating 30 years as a teacher in the school this year.

Kieran Donaghy came down to the ceremony – as he does every year – and it was clear from the smiling and laughing with the students, parents and staff, that he immensely enjoys the day.

There was a huge round of applause as each person stood up to receive their certificates from the Kerry star and Principal Grace Sheehan, with two special awards going to two students, James Dean Martin and Chloe Flaherty.

“The mass, from Fr Patsy, who’s on our board of management, was fantastic. The students have achieved far more than their academic achievements – some of them have finished their Leaving Certificates today and some have finished the Junior Certificate and their FETAC Level 2s,” said Ms Sheehan.

“They are far more confident going out into the world. Two of our students have actually already set up their own painting and decorating business,” she continued.

“There were two special awards, which basically are national awards for sports achievements, with two given to each school each year. We give them out at the end of the graduation ceremony to children to who have been exemplary in athletics,” she said.

Parents and students gravitated toward the refreshments at the end of the ceremony, full of pride at what had been achieved and looking forward to the days ahead.

FOLLOWING the success of the recent ‘Walk 4 Life Kerry’ (see here for story), people will be dusting off their running/walking shoes again  as a new fundraiser walk is organised for next month.

The ‘Walk 4 Autism’ will be a 5km walk/run to take place on July 12 from the John Mitchels GAA grounds in Ballyseedy with all proceeds from the event going towards helping children with autism in the St Ita’s and St Joseph’s school to get the equipment that they need.

It will cost €10 to enter the walk with children going free.

The idea behind the walk came from Joan O’Keeffe, a Tralee woman from the Mitchels area, who is who working tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure the event gets up and running.

“My little girl was accepted into St Ita’s just before Christmas,” Joan told TraleeToday.ie.  “She had been in a few different places that didn’t work out and we kind of had a long battle of getting her somewhere,” she said.

“I said that I would do a bit of fundraising because they didn’t have equipment yet for the new classroom,” she continued.

“I said to them that as soon she was set up in school, that I would try and do some fundraising. What they’re looking for is to put a bit of money together to put equipment into the new classroom because they don’t have any yet,” she said.

So, what can we expect from the day itself?

“The day of the event is a 5km walk/run. They can bring their kids and buggies if they want. It leaves from the Mitchels club in Ballyseedy at 1pm. There’ll be a fun day afterwards with face painting, sweets for the kids and we’re hoping that there will be a bouncy castle and spot prizes too, with teas and coffees too when they get back to the clubhouse,” she continued.

For those who cannot make the walk, there is an additional fundraiser planned for that night with all proceeds again going towards the school’s equipment.

“That night, we’re having a table quiz in Gally’s with finger food and spot prizes, so there’s going to be two events in the one day. It’s €10 per person to take part,” she finished.

Staff, students and their parents enjoyed a wonderful celebration at the school in Balloonagh and while the Department of Education and the Board of Management were responsible for funding the building of the extension, Kerry Group have kindly donated a sizeable sum of money to equip a new play area at the school.

“Kerry Group have been fantastic and they are giving us €15,000 to equip our new play area,” said Principal of St Ita’s and St Joseph’s, Grace Sheahan, speaking to TraleeToday.ie at the opening of the extension last Wednesday.

“We had no money to equip it and they came to the school a few weeks ago and saw the hard work of the staff. They then decided to put forward the money for the playground ” said Ms Sheahan.

A wonderful gesture which will no doubt be enjoyed by students at the school for years to come.

THE culmination of five years of planning and work came to fruition on Wednesday with the opening of a new extension to St Ita’s and St Joseph’s Primary and Post Primary School.

A special celebration day was held at the school with a Mass, celebrated by Bishop of Kerry, Ray Browne in the Balloonagh convent church across the road.

Kieran Donaghy, whose mother works as a Special Needs Assistant at the school, gave to talk to those present about the school’s motto, ‘Through Perseverance We Succeed’  and how it applied personally to his own career.

Afterwards, Fr Patsy Lynch of the Board of Management cut the ribbon to open the extension while there was music, dancing and sean-nos singing from the students, after which refreshments were served.

“It’s a fantastic day for the school. We’re delighted to have two new post-primary ASD rooms, a multi-sensory room, social space, play area and staff room,” said Principal Grace Sheahan.

“The vision for this initiated five years ago and work actually started last June. A year later we’re celebrating what has been a challenging project. Most of the funding came from the Department of Education, but the staff room came about through the hard work of the Board of Management and through fundraising,” said Ms Sheahan, who thanked everyone involved in the special day.

TEACHERS from four European countries visited St Ita’s St Joseph’s National School as part of a teacher exchange of ideas and best practice on Thursday.

Twenty-four teachers from, Germany, Tenerife, Turkey, Belgium came to the school as part of a European Union educational project called ‘Building Bridges and Extending Horizons’.

The project comes under the Comenius 2015 programme, which concentrates on school-level education. It aims to help young people and educational staff better understand the range of European cultures, languages and values.

“This project is very important because you get to see best international practice in other schools,” said Grace Sheahan, principal of St Ita’s St Joseph’s.

“You get to look at what other schools do in context and bring back ideas to your own school and also teachers are able to come here and look at what we do,” she said.

“When we’re finished we will gather all the information we have found. It’s like conducting scientific research in the area of special education. It’s also about challenging ourselves to do better than we are doing now,” she said.

The celebrate the occasion, St Ita’s St Joseph’s children put on a special performance in the school’s gymnasium.

LOCAL students have been chosen to represent their school in the regional finals of the ‘Our World Irish Aid Awards 2015’ which will be taking place in Limerick on May 20.

St Ita’s & St Josephs will be amongst 11 other schools and their pupils that will take part in the finals and who will be hoping to progress to the national finals on June 16.

The senior class students from the school will exhibit their project on ‘Global Citizenship’ which they created under the supervision of their teacher Anne Lawton.

Anne explained to TraleeToday.ie what the project was about.

“We didn’t think that it [the project] would get anywhere really. There are nine countries in Africa that ‘Irish Aid’ are in partnership with. Each class got their own country and they each had to do a project on them. They all worked really hard as we really only had a couple of weeks to work on this,” said Anne.

“We wanted the children to know that there are other children living in these different communities and that the way we live affects them. If we are selfish and wasteful, we impact on them. It’s hoped that the children see the different communities and the larger community that is out there,” she finished.

All projects created by the students are hoping to highlight the challenges that are facing children in developing countries and the progress which is being achieved there.

Over 1,000 primary schools throughout Ireland will be participating in the ‘Our World Irish Aid Awards 2015’. All of the entries will be assessed on their creativity, understanding of the theme, and their impact. Sixty projects that illustrate strengths across these three areas will receive an ‘Our World Irish Aid Awards’ plaque at the regional awards ceremonies in Dublin, Sligo, Limerick and Cork in May.

A selection of the top entries will then win a place at the final awards ceremony in June. At this ceremony, all twelve finalist schools will be presented with trophies, and the overall ‘Our World Irish Aid Awards’ trophy will be awarded to one outstanding project.

If you would like to find out more about the awards, then you can check it out on their website here.
