EIGHTEEN members of the Irish Red Cross attended Safeguarding Awareness Training at the Meadowlands Hotel, in Tralee, last Saturday.
The training is targeted at all members of the society as volunteers in the humanitarian organisation have the potential to have access to young people and vulnerable adults.
Members of the Red Cross Youth section who were over 16 were also entitled to apply for the training which must be renewed every three years.

Last Saturday’s training was organised by the Tralee Red Cross branch, and it was attended by members of the Red Cross from Kerry and Cork.

The Chair of the National Safeguarding Committee of the Irish Red Cross, Ms. Mary Watters (2 t’s), who was leading the training, outlined various examples of Child protection issues that members might come across.
The attendance also heard from Safeguarding Awareness Assistant Tutor, Charlie Harnett on various policies, procedures, protocols and good practice guidelines developed by the Irish Red Cross to manage the protection and welfare of young people and vulnerable adults that it’s volunteers may come in contact with.

Various workshops and ‘break-out’ sessions also took place during the day.
Chair of the local Tralee Red Cross Branch, Joe McDonnell, paid tribute to the volunteer members who gave up their Saturday to attend the training.
“Weatherwise, it was a lovely day and fair play to all involved in this to come in and devote their free time to it. There was great social engagement between the members, as well as receiving very valuable information and education on the subject,” said Joe.
