A NUMBER of the volunteers who are gearing up for Listowel Literary Festival recently gathered at a planning meeting in Listowel to finalise responsibilities ahead of the festival’s Opening Night, which takes place on May 28 in the Listowel Arms Hotel.
From managing venues and supporting artists to assisting with ticketing and welcoming guests, these volunteers are at the heart of the festival’s success.
This year’s Listowel Literary Festival is a collaboration between, Kerry Writers’ Museum, and St John’s Theatre & Arts Centre.

“There simply wouldn’t be a festival without them,” said the organisers in a joint statement. “Their time, commitment and warmth are what make Listowel such a special place to visit.”
Máire O’Connor, a long-time volunteer with Listowel Writers’ Week, shared; “I have been volunteering since 1989 and it’s the highlight of my year. We get to welcome people from all over the world and ensure they experience the very best of Listowel. It’s not just about books it’s about connection, kindness, and pride in our community.”
Bernie Carmody from Kerry Writers’ Museum added; “The arts have always been at the heart of this town, and volunteering is my way of keeping that heartbeat strong. Being part of the team gives me a sense of joy and purpose, we’re preserving something really meaningful.”
Maria McGrath from St John’s Theatre said; “There’s a wonderful energy during the festival. I love meeting new people, helping behind the scenes, and knowing I’ve contributed to something special. It brings us all together.”
This year’s programme promises something for everyone, with headline events featuring John Boyne, Jess Kidd, Rita Ann Higgins, Fintan Drury, and Christine Dwyer Hickey, along with historical walking tours and the Poetry for the Curious workshop with Mark Granier—a three-day journey for both beginner poets and poetry lovers to explore, question, and engage with the art form.
Tickets are selling fast, and several events have already sold out, including Sharon’s Grave at St. John’s Theatre and popular writing workshops with Marianne Power, John MacKenna, and Aingeala Flannery. Organisers are encouraging festival goers to book early to avoid disappointment.

IV never been to listowel for this festival and just turned 70…never got to write my book…sadly I’ll miss it again this year….thought it was June…
