A WONDERFUL concert of traditional music featuring renowned musicians from the west of Ireland is coming to Listowel on Friday, May 15 at 8pm.
Taking place in St John’s Theatre in Listowel, Máirín Fahy and Patsy Broderick will come together to pay homage to the unique music of east Galway and to one of its most famous musical sons, Fr. PJ Kelly.
Growing up in East Galway, an area renowned for its unique style of traditional music, Mairin from Ballinakill and Patsy from Kilrickle have been playing music together since childhood.
They were influenced by the music of Mairin’s aunt Aggie White, Eddie Moloney, Paddy Fahy, Vincent and Peter Broderick and the many wonderful musicians of the area.
Mairin and Patsy, as aspiring musicians, spent many Sunday afternoons in Aggie’s house listening to Fr.PJ Kelly, a Columban missionary, who, on his return from a Mission term, would join in the musical gatherings with local musicians in Ballinakill.
Whilst living in Dublin, Mairin and Patsy joined in the vibrant traditional music session scene and were members of the all female group “Macalla”.
Mairin and Patsy were delighted to get back to their roots in East Galway, recording the wonderful compositions of Fr.P.J. Kelly which is a fitting tribute to a unique and very talented composer.
His compositions have a sweet melodic charm and phrasing that is synonymous with East Galway. The title of their album is Galway to Fiji — The Music Of Fr. Kelly.
Special guests joining the duo on the night will be Yvonne Fahy, Eimear Coughlan and Francis Cunningham.
