REPORT: Warriors Dispel Demons With Impressive Away Win

.

Alan Cantwell reports on the Garveys Tralee Warriors opening game in the InsureMyVan.ie Men’s Super League 2024/2025 season…

UCC Demons 80

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors 93

After weathering a first quarter onslaught by the reigning National Cup champions, Garvey’s Tralee Warriors completely turned the game around from trailing by 30-16 at quarter time, to leading 52-47 at half time before going on to secure a comfortable 93-80 win over UCC Demons at the Mardyke Arena in the opening round of the InsureMyVan.ie Mens Super League on Sunday.

The Warriors had to withstand an all-out attack by Demons in the opening quarter that yielded the Cork side 30 points with the Demons dangerman Elijah Tillman, Toby Christensen and Roosevelt Davis all in range.

Continued below…

.

The Warriors resistance came in the form of scores from Eoin Quigley, Daniel Jokubaitis and new American point guard Marquavian Stephens who was impressive early on.

A late major effort from Stephens cut the Demons lead to 30-16 at quarter time and seemed to spark a Warriors revival.

Warriors new American guard Brandon Mahan, who hardly had an open look in the opening quarter, lit up spectacularly in the second quarter to fire in 15 points from inside and outside the arc.

Rap Buivydas, Gregorio Adon and Stephens also found scores easier to come by as Demons defensive effort struggled to contain the Warriors offensive threat.

Continued below…

.

Major scores from James Hannigan, Christensen and American Sean Clancey kept Demons in the game but at half time the Warriors assumed control to lead by 52-47.

Mahan continued to torment the Demons rearguard with a huge three early in the third and when Gregorio Adon and Stephens also found the basket from close range, the Warriors advantage was out to double digits.

The Demons cause suffered a double blow midway through the quarter when a lack of discipline by Sean Clancey saw him ejected with Toby Christensen fouled out soon after.

However the Cork side rallied with threes from James Hannigan and Carlton Cuff and with Warriors losing captain Eoin Quigley with his fifth foul, the game was back in the melting pot with Tralee leading by just 70-63 at three quarter time.

A hat trick of major scores from Buivydas, Jokubaitis and Mahan restored order for the Warriors early in a scrappy fourth quarter as the visitors regained control of the contest.

Demons again struggled to create anything to seriously challenge the Warriors dominance and were limited to scores from Lehane, Davis and Cuff that simply added respectability to the scoreline.

Another trademark three from Jokubaitis and a late volley from the outstanding Gregorio Adon eased the Warriors to a comfortable 93-80 win in the end.

UCC Demons: Elijah Tillman 14, Sean Clancey 13, Roosevelt Davis 11

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors: Gregorio Adon 23, Marquavian Stephens 21, Daniel Jokubaitis 18, Brandon Mahan 18

Next up for the Warriors is their first home game of the campaign when they host former arch rivals Templeogue in the Tralee Sports Complex on Saturday night with tip off at 7.30pm.

Academy – A great turnout this morning. Fantastic skills on display. We have only two weekends of training left so please make sure you make a special effort to keep attending as we prepare for our Sylvie Mason blitz in two weeks time.

John Mitchels and Ballymacelligott Under 9 Boys who played Go Games at John Mitchels on Sunday Morning

Under 9 Boys – John Mitchels U9 Boy’s hosted @ballymacelligott_gaa_club_ U9s on Sunday morning for some non competitive Go Games. Both side’s had great numbers resulting in more small sided teams ensuring everyone got plenty of football. Well done to both team’s for a fantastic morning’s football and we would like to wish Ballymac all the best in the rest of their season. Also thanks to George Bastible for reffing one of the games. Training for John Mitchels U9 Boys continues next Sunday from 10.15am All Newcomers Welcome!!

Under 8s and 10s Girls – A great session by the girls this morning. Please keep up the training at home and practise your skills. See you all next week.

Under 12 and 13 Girls – John Mitchels Under 13 girls play Milltown/Castlemaine in the Club Championship final at home on Monday at 5.45pm. All support would be massively appreciated.

Under 14 and 16 Girls – Our Under 15 girls played Beale in the semi-final of the County Championship  where there was a  tremendous performance by the team in what were the worst of weather conditions. Time and venue tbc re the final in the Championship where we will play either Duagh or Shannonside Tarbert.

Under 11 Boys – Our older Under 11’s travelled to Milltown on Sunday for a blitz. We were drawn in a group with Listry and Beaufort. First up we faced Listry and were well in the game at half time but unfortunately Listry were that bit stronger near the end and came out winners in a tight affair.

Next up we faced Beaufort and despite trailing by a point at half time we turned the tables after the break and were able to score at will and dominate a very good Beaufort team. Scoring a remarkable 5-07 in 16 minutes of football in total most of which was in the second half. That scoreline was enough to see us top the group which was a fantastic achievement for this group of players.

We faced Churchill in the semi-final who were very strong in our recent encounter. The boys battled well and were unlucky to not tag on a few goals with the width of a post depriving them of a goal at a crucial juncture. Unfortunately it was not to be and this is where we exited the competition. All credit to each and every one of the players who emptied the tank and gave everything.

Thanks to Milltown\Castlemaine for a well run event as always. We are nearing the end of the season and will train one last time on Sunday before the annual Sylvie Mason blitz the following week.

Under 13 Boys –John Mitchels are due to play Austin Stacks in a town league final. Details of this final to be organised in the coming days and will be sent out via our social media channels.

Under 14 & 15 Boys – We play Austin Stacks at home on Monday night at 7.45pm in the semi-final Tralee Town League. All support would be much appreciated.

Parish League

A super end of season for St Pats Juveniles. We finished off our year with the hugely popular Parish Leagues where we had huge battles between “The West” “Dingle Way” “Windmill” and “The Bridge.”  We had two tournaments, one for our U8 and U10 girls and also our U9 and U11 boys.

After they paraded around the pitch following our fantastic Piper Leanne McCarthy, they played three rounds of football and then they played out a Shield Final and a President’s Cup final. We were delighted to have our Club President Christy Murphy and Ciara Butler our Kerry goalkeeper join us to give out the awards. We were joined also on the day by our Parish League sponsor Kieran O’Shea of O’Shea’s Gala in Blennerville.

We would like to congratulate all our players for a fantastic year of football and especially all our coaches for their huge efforts throughout the year.

U5’s

Thanks for supporting our end of season club day! We had a fantastic of under 5s for fun and games on the astroturf. We urge you all to keep enjoying playing, running, jumping, hopping, skipping, and practicing ball skills over the winter. We hope you were inspired by Kerry Ladies Football star Ciara Butler who kindly game up her time to present the medals to all our juvenile players. Thanks so much to all the parents who helped with setting up, catering and clean up. It is very much appreciated. County Championship:

St Brendans prevailed in their quarter final bout with Kenmare Shamrocks having two points to spare at the finish, 0-16 to 0-14.

We had 6 players on the starting XV, Tom Hoare, David Moran, Tomás Kennedy, Jack Savage, Barry John Keane and Tommy Walsh with Ben Hanafin introduced as a 2nd half substitute.

The semi final draw will see St Brendans face off against Dr Crokes, impressive winners over Rathmore on Sunday  with the game going ahead on Saturday evening next 12th October in Austin Stack Park with a throw-in time of 5 pm.

Tralee/St Brendan’s Board:

We have drawn Na Gaeil in the Tralee/St Brendan’s board championship with the game to take place in Killeen – fixtures once known will be posted on social media platforms.

.

Juvenile Academy:

And that’s a wrap for another year. Our Juvenile Academy came to an end on a sunny Sunday fun filled morning.

As always our committee and coaches go above and beyond to ensure all the children have a fantastic last morning in the academy for all their hard work throughout the year.

.
.

The morning’s events started off with two of our very own football stars Tommy Walsh and David Moran joining us to take group pictures with all age groups. The groups were then assigned to the different stations that were set up throughout the pitch.

The most popular station was the obstacle course which involved having to crawl under nets, walk the plank and make your way through a black pipe. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed this.

.
.
.

Second station set up was speed testing to see who could run a set distance in the fastest time.   On to the third station where they enjoyed fun games from Its My Party including a football dart board and Basketball.  The fourth and final station involved a  tug of war which got very competitive at times and penalty shoot out against Max the Dog who was in goal.

There was an area set up for our smaller juveniles to enjoy themselves also.  Everyone enjoyed tea and coffee along with some delicious treats from Der Sullivan’s who are always so kind and generous to the club.  To finish off the day all our juveniles received their medals and plenty of treats.

.
.
.

All the work that has gone on in our Club would not be possible without the amazing volunteers we have on our committee and coaching side of the house.  We are so lucky to have so many enthusiastic and dedicated people who go above and beyond always.

So a huge thank you to all our coaches and committee members, take a bow and enjoy the well deserved break.  Thank you to all our Juvenile players for coming to training and games, week in week out.

And finally thank you to the parents for their continued trust and support, we really appreciate each and every one of you.  We will return to our Academy Training in February 2025.   Please ensure you keep an eye on clubzap for more information.

.
.
.
.

Our U9 boys have a blitz taking place in a few weeks. We ask all parents to please keep an eye on their clubzap.

The Strength and Conditioning winter program is being rolled out to our U11 and older groups. Further details in relation to this will be communicated through clubzap.

Ladies Notes:

.

U14 Girls:

Our Under 14s had an impressive win over Na Gaeil in the North Kerry League at their home pitch on Wednesday night.

Our girls put in a solid first half, with Allie Kerins and Lily Hussey dominating midfield and Lexi Keane a constant threat in front of goals. But it was the introduction of Taylor Kate Leane in the second half that put the game well and truly out of the home side’s reach. Great to have you back Taylor!

But that said, it was a super team performance – from our goalie Eve O’Sullivan right through to the forwards and each of our subs who came on.

They showed what a strong force they can be when they play as a team.

Special mention to Sennait Forester who had a blinder at full back.

Final score 5-11 to 3-5.

We play Na Gaeil again in the Shield Final, date to be decided.

.

U15 Girls:

Our U15 Girls were away to Beaufort in the Championship Semi Final Sunday evening.

KOR took the lead after 30 seconds with a great goal from Aimee, Beaufort were in fighting form and came back with 2 points. Aimee scored another point after we had a few misses with two more points following  from Aoife.

Beaufort battled on and our backs worked hard to keep them from scoring. Molly played outstanding in goals and saved a penalty just before halftime. At half time we were down by 1 point but that made our girls more determined for the win.

Second half our girls came back strong along with Taylor Kate just back from injury, our backs played great, especially Caragh and Mia who had an outstanding game. We had more great scores from Aimee, Aoife, Lexi and Allie. Great team effort by all  and they go on to the Final.

Final score :

Kerins O’Rahillys 6-11

Beaufort 1-9

REPORT: Kerry FC Defeated At Cobh Ramblers

.

David Moriarty reports on Kerry FC’s away game against Cobh Ramblers last night…

COBH RAMBLERS 2-1 KERRY FC

Kerry FC travelled for their penultimate away game of the season as they travelled to St. Colman’s Park on Friday evening to take on Cobh Ramblers.

Kerry FC were looking to improve on the point they took away from Finn Harps last week and Cobh were looking for their second win on the bounce as they beat Athlone Town last Friday night.

With just a couple of games left in the season, both sides wanted to finish the season on a high which started with a wet night in Cobh.

Cobh took the lead early on through a penalty from Jason Abbott. Matthew McKevitt was played through on goal and tried to go around Antonio Tuta.

McKevitt won the duel with Tuta as the Croatian took him down with referee David Dunne having no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Abbott stepped up and placed the ball into the top right corner to give the hosts the lead.

Continued below…

.

Kerry had their first real chance on goal in the nineteenth minute when Nathan Gleeson had possession of the ball just outside the eighteen yard box.

A flick up had Kerry FC looking for a penalty which was waved away, Nathan continued with the ball and got his shot off but it did not trouble Darragh Burke in the Ramblers goal who claimed the ball with ease.

The first sight on goal was a sign of more to come for Kerry FC as shortly after Cian Brosnan got the equaliser. A great ball through the channel into Brosnan was timed perfectly and Cian had no trouble in finishing the opportunity into the bottom left corner.

McGrath and Brosnan linked up once again seven minutes before halftime as a low cross into the area by Sean McGrath was met by Cian Brosnan at the near post but he could not get enough on the effort to divert it towards goal as Kerry FC finished the first half in a strong position.

Continued below…

.

Kerry FC had a decent amount of possession at the beginning of the second half and Oran Crowe got the first real chance of the second forty-five.

A long shot from Crowe outside the area nestled off the side netting and from some angles it looked like it may have gone in but it was not to be for Kerry FC’s number four.

On the hour mark a nice bit of play from Nathan Gleeson led to an over the top pass to Sean McGrath. Just before Sean was able to pull the trigger the ball was cleared away by Cobh in a good piece of defensive play from the home team.

Although Kerry FC had the better chances and the most possession of the second half it would be Cobh who would regain their lead.

Dale Holland took a shot from just inside the box and was saved well by Antonio Tuta who put the ball out for a corner. The resulting corner was swung in and Jason Abbott rose highest and got his second goal of the night from a lovely header.

The game was then controlled by Cobh from there on out and they went away in the end with all three points. A special mention must come the way of Rob Vasiu who came on as a second half substitute to make his first appearance of the season after injury.

Now for Kerry FC they still sit ninth with Longford Town to still play at the weekend and Kerry look ahead to next week’s final away game of the season as they travel to Ferrycarrig Park to take on Wexford FC.

Finnegan On Films: Action, Drama And Swordplay On The Box

.

With the rain teeming down outside, our movie guy, James Finnegan, looks at the movies on TV today and tonight to keep you entertained…

There is nothing like a Saturday film full of daring do, and 633 Squadron (Saturday 4pm RTE1) certainly fits the bill.

A Norwegian lieutenant, Erik Bergman (George Chakiris), gets to England during the Second World War with important information regarding the location of a Nazi rocket fuel plant.

RAF pilots, under Wing Commander Roy Grant (Cliff Robertson), are tasked with bombing the plant, but the capture of a resistance fighter threatens the plan.

Continued below…

.

The plot is a bit dated, but the aerial action scenes are very good with a stirring score by Ron Goodwin.  It is not a true story but is based on a number of real RAF missions.

Sam Rockwell lends his vocal talents to the animated adventure The Bad Guys (Saturday 6.35pm RTE1).

A group of serial animal criminals, Mr Wolf, Mr Snake, Mr Shark, Mr Piranha and Ms Tarantula are finally caught.  They pretend to change their ways in order to avoid prison. However, one of the gang realises that he actually does want to lead a law-abiding life.

This looks amazingly colourful, and I can easily imagine the cast had great fun making this.  Their enjoyment comes through and is well worth a family watch.

Continued below…

.

Good Night and Good Luck (Saturday 9.45pm TG4) is a fact based drama about American broadcast journalist Edward R Murrow’s stand against Senator McCarthy’s anti-communist witch hunts in the 1950’s.

Written, directed and staring George Clooney, this film boasts a stellar cast including Patricia Clarkson, Robert Downey Jr, Frank Langella, Jeff Daniels and David Strathairn as Murrow and was nominated for a number of awards.  The resonance with current times is disturbing.

In Absolute Power (Saturday 9.50 RTE2), a burglar, Luther Whitney (Clint Eastwood) flees a crime scene after witnessing a murder involving the US President (Gene Hackman)

However, a dogged detective Seth Frank (Ed Harris) is on his trail, and Whitney realises he must prove his innocence before shadowy secret service agents silence him for good.

Produced, written, directed and of course starring Clint Eastwood, it also stars Laura Linney, Judy Davis, Scott Glenn, Richard Jenkins and in his last screen appearance E.G. Marshall.

Fast and Furious 9 (Saturday 10.10 RTE1) has a plot that is hard to describe as I had little interest in F&F 1-8, but for you, gentle reader, I will try.

Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) is forced to postpone his retirement when Cipher, a dangerous cyber terrorist, escapes with the help of Dominic’s estranged brother who is also an international terrorist.

Again, the action sequences are spectacular, but I had no idea what was happening between them, and to whom, so have at it!

Excalibur (Sunday 12.45am RTE1) is John Boorman’s atmospheric take on the Arthurian legend.

Nigel Terry is the king whose peaceful reign is plunged into chaos by an affair and his scheming half-sister Morgana (Helen Mirren)

This also stars Nicol Williamson, Nicolas Clay, Cherie Lunghi, Gabriel Byrne, Liam Neeson and Patrick Stewart, many of who were making their big screen debut. Enjoy!

Know Your Rights: Partial Capacity Benefit

.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

Partial Capacity Benefit is a social welfare scheme which allows you to return to work or self-employment if you have reduced capacity to work as a consequence of your illness or disability and to continue to receive a payment from the Department of Social Protection (DSP).

How do I qualify for Partial Capacity Benefit?

If you are currently getting Illness Benefit (for a minimum of 6 months) or Invalidity Pension and wish to return to work, you may qualify for Partial Capacity Benefit if your capacity for work is reduced by your medical condition. You will qualify for Partial Capacity Benefit if your restriction on capacity for work is assessed as moderate, severe, or profound. If it is assessed as mild you will not qualify.

The work you do while on Partial Capacity Benefit does not have to be for rehabilitative or therapeutic purposes.

You can check the financial consequences of starting work and claiming Partial Capacity Benefit by using the Benefit of Work Estimator tool on welfare.ie. or by calling in to your local Citizens Information Centre.

Continued below…

.

I am in receipt of Invalidity Pension & thinking of doing voluntary work. Must I apply for Partial Capacity Benefit?

If you are getting the Invalidity Pension and want to do volunteer work, you must apply directly to the Invalidity Pension section for permission. You do not have to transfer onto the Partial Capacity Scheme if you wish to do voluntary work.

How long can I get Partial Capacity Benefit?

If you are coming from Invalidity Pension, your Partial Capacity Benefit (PCB) will continue for up to 3 years (156 weeks), or until you turn 66. You can apply for PCB again at the end of the 3 years. You will be reassessed to find out if you qualify.

If you are coming from Illness Benefit, your PCB payment will continue to the end of your entitlement to Illness Benefit.

If I transfer to Partial Capacity Benefit and start work but become ill again what are my options?

When you are getting Partial Capacity Benefit and you are unable to work for a period of time due to illness, you should contact the Partial Capacity Section and let them know about your situation

For short periods of illness (up to 8 weeks at a time), you can stay on Partial Capacity Benefit, but your weekly rate can be increased to the full Illness Benefit or Invalidity Pension personal rate.

Continued below…

.

For longer periods of illness (greater than 8 weeks), DSP will reassess your Partial Capacity Benefit claim and you may return to your Illness Benefit or Invalidity Pension. If you become able for work again you can contact DSP about going back onto Partial Capacity Benefit.

What is the rate of Partial Capacity Benefit?

Partial Capacity Benefit is made up of a personal rate for you and may include increases for your qualified adult and qualified children. The personal rate of payment is based on the assessment of your restriction on capacity for work, whether you were in receipt of Illness Benefit or Invalidity Pension and your current rate of payment.

.

Do I keep my entitlement to secondary benefits if I transfer to Partial Capacity Benefit?

If you were getting Invalidity Pension and were entitled to Free Travel or Island Allowance, you can keep these if you qualify for Partial Capacity Benefit. You cannot keep your Fuel Allowance.

You can also keep the Household Benefits Package but it will be means-tested after the first 2 years and annually after that. The means test has a weekly income limit.

This limit is the maximum rate of State Pension (Contributory) for your circumstances (this includes any dependents you may have) plus €120. Your weekly income limit is then compared to your weekly means in a means test.

If you were getting Invalidity Pension and a Living Alone Allowance (LAA) with your Invalidity Pension (or you start to live alone while you are getting PCB), your rate of PCB will be calculated on the basis of your Invalidity Pension and your LAA. So, for example, if your restriction on capacity for work is severe, your PCB payment will be 75% of your IP and LAA payment.

You should check with the Department of Social Protection to see how your Rent Supplement may be affected by your participation in the Partial Capacity Scheme.

How do I apply for Partial Capacity Benefit?

You complete a Partial Capacity Benefit form, which you can get from the Department of Social Protection or from your local Citizens Information Centre.  A Medical Assessor will assess the restriction on your capacity for work.

This may require you to attend a medical assessment. You should include all appropriate medical evidence with your application. If you qualify for Partial Capacity Benefit, you are not required to send in medical certificates.

When should I apply?

You must apply for Partial Capacity Benefit (PCB) within 21 days of starting work. You can apply for Partial Capacity Benefit before you get a job. You must start work within 13 weeks of making your application.

Partial Capacity Benefit is not paid to people over 66. You should apply for a State Pension at least 3 months before your 66th birthday.

What are my options, if I apply for PCB and my application is unsuccessful?

You can appeal a decision on your claim for Partial Capacity Benefit to the independent Social Welfare Appeals Office. You should appeal within 21 days of getting the decision. If you need advice or assistance with your appeal, you should contact your local Citizens Information Centre for advocacy support.

If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or you have other questions, you can drop-in to your local Citizens Information Service in Tralee, Killarney or Caherciveen – opening hours are listed on our website www.citizensinformation.ie

.

By Ivan Hurley

With just three games remaining in the 2024 SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division season, the Kingdom go to Cobh for the club’s penultimate away match of the season.

A comeback draw against Finn Harps in Mounthawk Park last Friday night has moved the Kingdom off bottom spot and into 9th place on the table, level on points with Longford Town in the race to avoid the wooden spoon.

But trips to Cobh and Wexford followed by a home tie on the final day against Athlone Town, McCarthy’s men will need to pick up another couple of points to ensure the Kingdom’s fate stay’s in our own hands.

After a tough couple of weeks results wise, the draw against Play-Off chasing Finn Harps was well welcomed by the Mounthawk faithful who have something to be cheerful about ahead of the trip to St. Colman’s Park.

A win at the famous aul ground back in July in the Sports Direct Men’s FAI Cup are grounds for optimism ahead of Friday night’s clash.

A string of 5 straight defeats for Ramblers was stopped with a fantastic away win against Athlone Town last Friday night away from home. They will be looking to put a recent run of poor home results behind them tomorrow night against a Kerry team in much need of an away win.

It’s a game that has yet to produce no goals so buckle up for an end of season classic!

Kerry are aiming for back to back away wins in St Colman’s Park for the very first time. The Kingdom won here last time out in the Sport’s Direct Men’s FAI Cup but have yet to secure all 3 points on the road this season.

Speaking to the media ahead of the game, First Team Head Coach Conor McCarthy gave a number of injury concerns ahead of the game. Ryan Kelliher will be absent for the remainder of the 2024 campaign due to injury. Meanwhile, Cian Barrett and Samuel Aladesanusi are being monitored this week with niggling injuries and will battle through late fitness tests for this one.

Conor McCarthy said; “Cobh’s results of late may not appear the best but that doesn’t paint the full picture. They are a very good side, they’ve been to Athlone recently and got a great result. We know they are a very good side, well organised and great talent so it’s a tough task. We will need to be disciplined like we were against Finn Harps last week to get any sort of a result up there. We are looking forward to the trip but will have to be at our very best to come out of Cobh with a positive result.”
