Angie Baily: ‘This Is Monumental, I’m A Nobody Really From Ballymac’

FOR Angie Baily, it was long wait until she was officially confirmed as elected as a councillor to the Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council.

The teacher, originally from Rathanny in Ballymac, was certain to get the sixth seat even after Thomas McEllistrim requested a recount in the early hours of Monday morning, but she had to wait until just after 4pm later that day to hear the words of confirmation from Deputy Returning Officer Damien Ginty.

She was still reeling from the annoucement when we spoke to her at the count centre on Monday afternoon, where she reflected on the achievement of being elected as a first-time candidate.

“It’s almost like being like handed your healthy baby in hospital…the wait is over. This is not just me, I’d be nowhere without the team behind me. For me this is monumental, I’m a nobody really from Ballymac coming into this and to be able to take a seat and represent local people is huge.”

She said she received great support and advice from Fine Gael stalwarts in the party like Deputy Brendan Griffin, Frank Quilter and others.

“My own late father Paddy Joe had a great interest in politics and I would have had his friends to call on including the former councillor Pat McCarthy and even Fianna Fáil Cllr Fionnán Fitzgerald was always there for advice when I needed it.

Speaking of her father, who passed away nearly six years ago,  I suggest he would have been a proud man seeing his daughter elected.

Continued below…

.

“I don’t know if he thought he would ever have seen a day like this, but I’m sure he would be very, very proud. He was a great community man who brought people together and if I can do that then at least I think I will have succeeded.”

With Fianna Fáil’s Anne O’Sullivan also elected for Tralee and Fionnán Fitzgerald elected in the Castleisland Local Electoral Area, there’ll be a trio of Ballymac natives on the Council when it meets for the first time on June 21.

“I think we’ll have to start selling the water from Ballymac because there must be something in it!” said Angie.

“It’s not just three people from Ballymac, but also three teachers and I think there’s something in that. It’s a wonderfully proud moment. Fionnán and I sing together in the local church and Anne is involved in the church down the road, so we know each other locally and we’re all involved in the community. Who would have thought we’d all get in?”

Tralee MD will now have three female representatives on the Council, the most ever, and Angie said she is looking forward to working with Deirdre Ferris and Anne O’Sullivan.

“Let’s see how we can shake things up and bring something new to proceedings, a bit of je ne sais quoi,” she said, laughing.

This ‘nobody’ from Ballymac is aiming to make a name for herself on the political scene over the next five years.

REPORT/PHOTOS: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors Given Tough Lesson By UCD

Alan Cantwell reports on Garvey’s Tralee Warriors defeat at the hands of UCD Marian at Tralee Sports Complex on Saturday night…

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors surrendered their place at the head of affairs in the Super League to keen rivals UCD Marian in a top of the table clash in front of a packed out Tralee Sports Complex on Saturday night.

For only the second time in their short Super League history have the Warriors succumbed to a defeat from a visiting side as Marian emulated the feat achieved by League champions Templeogue last season to register a win in Tralee.

Kieran Donaghy provided the perfect opening for the Warriors with the first score of the game and added two free throws after Daragh O’Hanlon opened his account.

Continued below…

.

A three from Dan James and a score from Mike Garrow for UCD Marian saw the sides level early in the first.

But Marian’s aerial dominance under the board told when Mike Bedulskis helped himself to three scores from close range and with James, Garrow and Conor Meany also on the mark the Dublin side led by 9. Warriors reply came from free throws from Eoin Quigley and Dusan Bogdanovic but Bedulskis and Barry Drumm fired in to push the Marian lead to 23-13 at the end of the first.

Trae Pemberton was on the mark early in the second for the Warriors but Marian were finding their scores with some ease and when they struck with a couple each from Neil Baynes and Garrow the Warriors looked decidedly uneasy as their rivals forged ahead to lead by double scores 34-17 mid way through the quarter.

Donaghy sparked a welcome revival for the hosts with a couple from under the board and when Pemberton landed his first three, Donaghy followed suit and Fergal O’Sullivan chipped in with a score to leave just 9 between the sides but Meany and Kinavane with a score and the extra saw UCD 13 to the good at half time 44-31.

Into the third and when Dan James and Mike Garrow launched back-to-back threes Marian were back out to a 19 point lead.

Warriors kept in touch with Pemberton’s second three of the night and another from Donaghy but Bedulskis, Garrow and a three from James saw Marian hold the home side in check.

Fergal O’Sullivan and Pemberton between them brought the lead back to a more manageable 10 before Meany and Garrow restored the UCD advantage.

However O’Sullivan was to have the last word in the quarter drilling two huge threes to leave just 11 between the sides and giving the huge Tralee support something to cheer about going down the stretch.

However the Warriors hopes of maintaining their almost perfect home record were short lived as UCD Marian launched a relentless drive to the line and quite simply overpowered and overran the hosts in a hugely one sided final quarter.

Action from Saturday night’s game. Photo by Liam Ryan

The Warriors were dealt a considerable blow early in the fourth when Kieran Donaghy fell foul of the officials when issued with his second unsportsmanlike foul of the night meriting ejection from the court.

After that, the Warriors were to land just two scores in the remaining 7 minutes as Marian powered through the lanes to score through Drumm, Meany, Garrow, Bedulskis and Markowicz and see out an impressive win against an uncharacteristically disjointed and disappointing display from the Warriors.

Scorers

Warriors: Trae Pemberton 18, Kieran Donaghy 15, Fergal O’Sullivan 13

UCD Marian: Mike Garrow 22, Mike Bedulskis 17, Dan James 14

• Next up for the Garvey’s Tralee Warriors another tough top of the table clash with Griffith Swords Thunder at the ALSAA in Dublin next Saturday evening with action getting underway at 6 o’clock.

PRESIDENT of Sinn Féin, Gerry Adams TD, received a rapturous welcome in The Rose Hotel Tralee on Thursday night when he launched ‘Ireland’s Hunger for Justice’, the story of Ireland’s 22  hunger strikers.

There was a packed house for the launch as people came from all over the county and indeed country for the event.

A tremendous amount of work went into collecting the information and photos for the book which is a must for anyone with an interest in Irish history.

Early in 2017 a committee consisting of Martin Ferris TD, John Buckley, Pól O’Clúbháin, Seán O’Braoin, Éamonn deBairéad, Seán O’Luing, Tadhg O’Duinneacha came together as The Tomás Ághas Centenary Memorial Committee.

Their intention was to honour Thomas Ashe, the centenary of whose death falls on September 25, but it was decided that a book would also remember all who died on hunger strike from the first hunger striker, Ashe, in 1917 to the last, Mickey Devine, in 1981.

The stories of Ashe, McSwiney and Sands are well known but others like Joseph Whitty of Wexford or Tony D’Arcy of Galway have almost been forgotten.

The book gives a snippet of each of the men’s lives and will be the first time that all 22 men have been remembered in the one book.

Gerry Kelly, who was force fed for over 200 days while on hunger strike, was also present for the launch and told of his own experience of force feeding.

There was also a hunger strike exhibition around the room telling the story of the men.  Many people queued for Martin Ferris, Gerry Adams and Gerry Kelly to sign copies of the book. Scroll down for photos…

Ferris Sends Good Wishes To Martin McGuinness On Retirement

.
Martin Ferris.

SINN Féin TD for Kerry, Martin Ferris, has sent his best wishes to Martin McGuinness who has retired from electoral politics.

Speaking today Deputy Ferris said; “it has been an honour and a privilege to work alongside Martin McGuinness for many years, Martin was instrumental in negotiations leading up to the Good Friday Agreement and it has been incredible journey that many of us have taken together. He has been a pivotal figure in the Republican movement since the early seventies. He is someone I consider a friend and comrade who has worked tirelessly for his beliefs. Despite his past, he held out the hand of friendship to his Unionist brothers and sisters and has advanced both the cause of Irish unity and national reconciliation on the island of Ireland.

Continued below…

.

“Martin often visited Kerry over the years and he is held in high regard by Kerry republicans. On behalf of myself and all in Sinn Féin Kerry, I would like to extend our best wishes and hopes for a speedy recovery to Martin and his wife Bernie and extended family.”

“While Martin McGuinness is retiring from active electoral politics, I know that he will be there to advise and support the next generation of leadership of Sinn Féin, and I look forward to him being able to spend some time in the future, fishing on the rivers and lakes of Kerry, which I know he enjoys immensely.”

Campaign Urges Kerry’s 10,000 British-Born Residents To Vote In ‘Brexit’ Referendum

Scotia Insert
.

BrexitAN urgent call has been made for Kerry’s British-born community to make their vote count in the   upcoming UK referendum on EU membership.

European Movement Ireland has launched the ‘Post Your Vote’ Appeal. There are 10,362 British-born citizens in Kerry and they are asked to post their vote this weekend to ensure it arrives by the deadline on referendum day which is 10pm on June 23.

“British people in Ireland have been registering to vote by post or by ‘proxy’. Today we’re urging those living in Kerry to post their vote this weekend, to ensure it arrives by the deadline which is 10pm on 23 June.  If they have appointed a trusted person to be their proxy, we are asking them to remind that family member or friend to make sure they vote next Thursday on their behalf,” said Noelle O’Connell, Executive Director of European Movement Ireland.

This latest reminder is part of European Movement Ireland’s #PhoneAFriend campaign, which aims to encourage both British citizens living in Ireland and Irish people in Britain to vote in the UK’s EU referendum this day week.

“It is worth noting that an estimated 230,000 English, Scottish and Welsh people live here in Ireland and that many of them are eligible to vote in the upcoming referendum”, added Ms O Connell.

“With the polls showing ever closer margins between the ‘Remain’ and ‘Leave’ camps, we are urging the 10,362 British people who live in Kerry to take part in this once in a generation choice.”

“While European Movement Ireland is not advocating how people should vote, we are strongly of the belief that a European Union without the UK as a member would be bad for Ireland, bad for Europe and bad for the UK itself.   Everyone will of course accept the final decision of the UK electorate next Thursday, but we hope that all of those who are eligible to vote will do so.  It’s vital that they have their say on the day about a decision which affects so many people now and in the future,” concluded Ms O’Connell.

Ferris Calls For Kerry TDs To Support Sinn Féin’s Rent Bill

Scotia Insert
.

Martin Ferris.

KERRY Sinn Féin TD Martin Ferris has called on his constituency colleagues to support his party’s Rent Certainty Bill which will be voted on in the Dáil tomorrow.

Fianna Fáil has signalled that it will vote with Fine Gael and government Independents to reject rent certainty which, he says, will condemn more renters to homelessness.

It comes at a time when there has been a five per cent rise in the cost of rent in Kerry in the past year.

According to figures from the Residential Tenancies Board, the average monthly rent in Kerry in the first quarter of this year was €572, up €29.50 on the same period last year. The average rent in Tralee stands at €577.26.

“The Sinn Féin Bill seeks to link rents to the consumer price index as a way of preventing extortionate increases in private rents which are forcing families into homelessness every day,” said Deputy Ferris.

“The government’s response to this has been to stall and wait for a committee report due out at the end of this week. But the reality is that the recommendations of that report will take at least six months to be implemented.

“That is simply not good enough when we are in the middle of a crisis which is seeing people made homeless every day. There is hardly a day goes by that my constituency offices are not contacted by people who are about to become, or are in fact ,homeless. We need action now. That is why I am appealing to my constituency colleagues to vote in support of the Sinn Féin Bill tomorrow and to lobby their party leadership to see the logic in that position,” said Deputy Ferris.

Ferris Blasts Insurance Industry And Government Over Car Insurance Premium Hikes

Credit Union Loans
.

Martin Ferris.

SINN Féin TD Martin Ferris has strongly criticised both the insurance industry and the last Government after he was contacted by Kerry motorists saying their insurance premiums have risen by as much as 40 per cent in twelve months.

In one instance he said a man was quoted €3,000 despite having over 5 years experience and a clean driving record.

Recent figures released from the CSO’s Consumer Price Index for the past twelve months show a 30.5% increase in the average cost of car insurance in 2015 over the previous year. Deputy Ferris says that constituents who are now renewing policies for 2016 are reporting increases of up to 40 per cent compared with prices quoted last year.

Deputy Ferris said that it was unacceptable that companies are forcing such dramatic increases on consumers, and has criticised the outgoing Government for not conducting a proper review into premium prices.

“Insurance companies have been increasing premium prices across the board over the last number of months and are actively refusing to insure older cars resulting in the cost of owning and driving a car to sky rocket,” he said.

“If we look at the figures from the CSO for 2015, we’ve already witnessed proof that the average premium across the state has risen by 30.5% compared to 2014.

“In recent weeks, I’ve been contacted by drivers from across the county who are very concerned at the hike in prices quoted to them by their insurer for cover for the next twelve months – some have seen a 40% jump in the cost of their premiums. I have also been contacted by numerous young drivers who cannot afford the exorbitant rates insurance companies are looking for, in one instance a young driver has to consider whether he will continue in his current employment as he needs a car to travel to his place of work and his insurance company are asking for over €3000, this despite the fact that he has over 5 years experience and a clean driving record.”

“It is unacceptable for companies to boost the cost of car insurance to such a degree and it is particularly unfair for young drivers who face being priced off the road as a result of such shameful profiteering. Rural isolation and the inherent mental health problems that accompany it, will be exasperated if rising costs of insurance are not tackled in the short term.”

“Motor insurance is mandatory and the Government therefore has a duty as a legislator to conduct a review of premium prices, but as yet they have done very little to remedy this problem.

“My party colleague Deputy Pearse Doherty in fact has been raising this issue in the Dáil with Minister Noonan who simply claims that the issue is ‘complex’ and he continues to hide behind EU law in relation to the motor industry.

“Measures such as enhancing existing legislation and improving Garda technology to help combat fraud could have been considered, but the action required has not happened and thus premiums have been steadily growing.

“I acknowledge that an inter-departmental working group has been established to examine the cost of car insurance and to then make recommendations, however the group has only just begun its work so the chances of motorists in Kerry seeing any improvement in the near future is unlikely.”

THE Healy-Rae bandwagon rolled up to Kildare Street this morning and there was a hooley on the street for the supporters (see video below).

But before Michael headed up to the capital, he was in Ballyroe last night to strut his stuff on the catwalk to help raise funds for Kerry ladies football clubs.

He was there with his good friend and supporter, Cllr Sam Locke, and the TD showed his true colours by donning an Ireland soccer jersey on the catwalk to support the boys in green (see style photos from the night here).

In the morning he headed off to Dublin with the rest of the clan for the first day in the new Dáil, a momentous occasion for the Healy Raes as Danny joined him in Leinster House. They certainly knew how to celebrate as they held up traffic for few minutes to make a speech and play music.

IT’S all over now…for the moment anyway.

An exhausting weekend in Killarney for candidates and their loyal supporters came to an end on Sunday night after all the successful politicians had been elected just after 8pm.

Brendan Griffin, Martin Ferris and John Brassil were hoisted on high by their supporters and the celebrations began in earnest, with the winning and losing candidates afforded to chance to  make a speech from the podium.

It was a sad day for the former Fine Gael Minister Jimmy Deenihan who lost his seat and retires after 30 years in politics. In his speech he thanked the people of Kerry for their support over the years and said he and Arthur Spring of Labour were partly victims of tough decisions made by the Government in the past five years.

Arthur Spring congratulated the winning candidates and praised his own team for their tireless work in the campaign. He said it was a difficult day for the party, but they would survive the result. He also paid tribute to Jimmy Deenihan whom he said has made an enormous contribution to society, not just in Kerry, but nationwide.

Fine Gael’s Brendan Griffin said he will not let the people of Kerry down. He paid tribute to the losing candidates, especially his close friend Arthur Spring whom he said did fantastic work and was sure he would be back. He also paid tribute  to his mentor Jimmy Deenihan who gave him a chance. He said the former Minister was “the hardest working man I ever came across and wish you well for the future”.

Deputy Griffin also thanked his political team and especially his parents and his wife Róisín.

Fianna Fail’s John Brassil said it gave him no pleasure to be elected on the day that Jimmy Deenihan lost his seat. “He’s a true gentlemen of politics and a great friend of mine. You’ve served the people of Kerry well,” he said.

He thanked the Fianna Fail team in Kerry, the canvassers and especially Norma Moriarty, whose transfers, he said, brought him over the line. “We worked so well together. You’re a gentle and very kind woman, with a great future in politics and I thank you sincerely,” he said.

He had special thanks for his family for their support, including his mother Mary. “She had a very bad year of health and she’s here tonight. I hope today is the start of your return to good health,” he said.

Sinn Féin’s Martin Ferris also had kind words for the losing candidates, especially Jimmy Deenihan, whom he said he has known over 40 years from the sporting fields to the political arena.

“We’ve had political rows but we’ve remained friends. He has 33 years as a servant of the people of Kerry and deserves recognition for that,” he said. He also promised the people of Kerry that he would continue to serve them to the best of his ability.

“I want to assure you, while there is breath in my body, I will do everything in my power to bring about a fairer and more just society and more equality for our people,” he said.

Danny Healy Rae said the people in Dublin just don’t get it and while the politicians pay big money to advisors, the only advisors they have are the people of Kerry.

He credited his father Jackie Healy Rae for the election victory and said they learnt everything from him. He also thanked the army of canvassers and workers on the ground who made the victory possible and also paid tribute to Jimmy Deenihan and the other losing candidates.

Last up was his brother Michael who  said it was a tough year for him after losing his mother and father and two great friends Arthur Lenihan and Bernard Collins.

He promised the people of Kerry that they would work tirelessly and do their best for the people of Kerry.

“You’re trusting us with your vote. In return, what ye’ll get is a sound, solid political service both from myself and Danny and from Cllr Johnny Healy Rae. We’ll do a simple thing always and that is our level best,” he said.

So ended Election 2016 in Kerry. What happens next is anyone’s guess but one thing is certain; no candidate wants to through that again for a while. Scroll down for more photos…

Michael was elected on Saturday night after 11pm with over 20,000 first preference votes – the most in the country – and Danny follows today.

Of course this has generated a lot of discussion on Twitter. Here’s what people were saying…

Ferris Blasts Government’s Health Record As Minister Varadkar Arrives In Town

University Hospital Kerry sign 3SINN Féin TD Martin Ferris has blasted Fine Gael’s record on health as Minister Leo Varadkar prepares to visit the newly renamed University Hospital Kerry today.

“Fine Gael’s legacy in health is chaos in emergency departments, people waiting on hospital trolleys for days on end, endless waiting lists, and children denied essential treatments,” said Deputy Ferris.

“There were 30 people waiting on trolleys at the A&E in Kerry General for the first four days of this week. Ambulance call out times have cost lives and put many others at risk in Kerry,” he said.

“Under Fine Gael’s watch the chaos in our health services has gotten worse. Our health care staff and emergency services are being forced to work in extremely difficult circumstances while patients are not getting the treatment they deserve.

“Fine Gael’s has scrapped their promise to deliver universal health insurance. Their promises to reduce hospital waiting lists and the trolley crisis have been broken. Their promises to deliver free GP care is gone. So is their promise to end prescription charges. It’s one broken promise after another,” said Deputy Ferris.

“It’s time we called stop on Fine Gael’s plans to privatise our health services. Sinn Féin has a fully costed, deliverable plan for health based on the fundamental belief that people should be able to access health care as a right, on the basis of need,” he said.

Minister from Health Leo Varadkar is due at the hospital in Tralee at 1pm to officially announce the name change.

REMEMBER that sand art ‘election poster’ for Michael ‘Pixie’ O’Gorman which went viral earlier this week.

Well the independent candidate on the Right2Change platform has just released a time-lapse video showing how it was done.

The event took place on Monday at the beach in Pixie’s hometown of Ballybunion and garnered national attention for his novel approach to canvassing. Watch how it was done below…

WHILE the flyers are, well, flying through the letterboxes and posters are aplenty on poles around town, a Kerry candidate in the forthcoming election has taken a more novel and environmentally friendly way of getting his message across in his home town.

Michael ‘Pixie’ O’Gorman from Ballybunion is running as an independent candidate on the Right2Change platform and he used the beach yesterday afternoon to canvass the locals.

Pretty cool way of doing things we have to admit.

LOCAL politicians showed showed some pretty good skills at a special 5-a-side soccer match on stage at Siamsa Tíre on Sunday morning.

The unusual location was apt, as the event was held to launch Tralee Musical Society’s new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘The Beautiful Game’, which will be performed at the venue next month.

Election candidates, John Brassil (FF), Arthur Spring  (Lab) and Grace O’Donnell (FG) were joined by Pa Daly and Toireasa Ferris of Sinn Fein in a surprising cross-party alliance that yielded a result on the day.

They faced Rose of Tralee Elysha Brennan with TraleeToday.ie columnist Orlagh Winters, Tralee Chamber Alliance President John Drummey,  Radio Kerry’s Andrew Morrissey and Rose Escort of the Year Shane Kenny making up the opposing side.

There was plenty goalmouth action and drama – referee James Finnegan gave a penalty to each side and brandished a couple of cards – but in the end the politicians prevailed, winning 4-2 in front of a good crowd of onlookers and cast members.

Director of the forthcoming production, Oliver Hurley, said he was very excited about the year ahead for the Society and was delighted to get the opportunity to put on a show of such passion and relevance in Siamsa.

Cast members then took to the stage and performed two songs from the production (see short video of an excerpt from one of the numbers below).

Tralee Musical Society chose to produce a show that they felt was very apt for the year that’s in it, and has a sense of patriotism about it. Combining sports, politics, and a Romeo and Juliet romance, it is an Irish story about young people on the verge of adulthood, wanting to love, play football and lead normal lives in a city dominated by violence and hatred.

The Beautiful Game is a West End hit which depicts the story of the troubles in Northern Ireland. It is a humourous, dramatic, and powerful show.

Set in 1969 Belfast, this original musical concerns a local young Catholic football team, whose lives are derailed by the Irish Troubles. Focusing on five of the teams’ players, the priest who manages them, and the girls with whom the lads are involved with, this show is filled with dark humour and teenage awkwardness.

The Beautiful Game will be performed in Siamsa Tire from March 30 to April 3. Call Siamsa on 066-7123055 for ticket details.

A KERRY TD has described the omission of the Killarney to Farranfore N22 proposed road development from the Government’s recently announced €42bn investment plan, as a severe blow for the county.

Kerry South Independent TD, Tom Fleming, has described the decision as a massive setback to the infrastructural needs of the county.

Deputy Fleming said that this road is a transport hub and the preliminary preparations for the plan and design of the new road has being ongoing for the past 15 years at an approximate cost of €1.5 million. These monies have been expended by Kerry County Council and the National Roads Authority.

Deputy Fleming has drawn attention to this matter to the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohoe T.D at a meeting of the Dail Committee of Transport and Communications on Wednesday and called on the Minister to have the road included in a revised plan.

Minister Donohoe stated that he would bring the request back to cabinet for reconsideration.

Deputy Fleming has stated that is is hugely disappointing that such a vital project for County Kerry is excluded from the Infrastructure and Capital Investment Plan 2016-2021 but that he will press ahead to have it included in a revised package.

ANTI-WATER Charge campaigners and protesters again showed their defiance of Irish Water and the Government in the Square yesterday evening as they publicly burnt their bills.

THE Kerry Branch of the Right2Water movement were the group behind the event as they encouraged everyone present to avoid payment of their water bills.

The crowd made their feelings about Irish Water very clear as they cheered on the first burning of the pieces of paper.

The group had a large metal bin set up in the middle of the raised area in the where they encouraged the gathered crowd to come up one by one to burn their bills.

“There’s 6 out of 10 people in this country already not paying their bills. On the 29th of August above in Dublin, Right2Water are going to have another major protest. There will be hundreds of thousands of people on the streets again and it will be another nail in the coffin of Irish Water,” said Michael O’Gorman, one of the organisers of the demonstration, as he proceeded to burn his bill.

“This is for the people that can’t afford their bills. As the song goes, ‘Burn Baby Burn’,” he finished.

Labour TD Wants Your Views On How Best To Help Reform Childcare

Arthur Spring wants parents to speak up about about ways to reform childcare.

KERRY North/West Limerick Labour Deputy Arthur Spring is encouraging parents in Kerry to give their views on how best to reform the childcare system, all as part of the new Labour Party campaign.

Deputy Spring is asking people to partake in a short online questionnaire and submit their thoughts on a range of childcare issues, from cost to quality of care.

The Kerry politician is one of four Labour TDs that were recently selected by Tánaiste Joan Burton to sit on the party’s new ‘Working Group on Childcare’ which has been tasked with looking into the issue.

Feedback from this survey will go on to shape the party’s 2016 General Election manifesto.

“Childcare is a huge issue for parents in Kerry and one which comes up regularly on the doors when out canvassing. It is evident that the current childcare situation in Ireland is not working to facilitate parents, particularly mothers to combine work and family life, and we in Labour are working hard to reform it,” said Deputy Spring.

“As part of this new campaign, I would like parents from Kerry who have young children and use childcare resources regularly to fill out our short questionnaire. I will be paying close attention to the views that come back to us as part of my work with the new working group,” he said.

“We want to hear from parents about their childcare arrangements, what works and what doesn’t, and more importantly, how things could be made easier for them. It’s clear that we have to do more when it comes to supporting families raise their children,” he continued.

“In view of this, I’d strongly urge parents in Kerry to participate in our simple questionnaire and play their part in helping to ensure that our children are provided with the best quality childcare.”

If you would like to let your views be known and take part in this survey, you can do so by clicking HERE.

MICHEÁL Martin was out and about in Tralee on Thursday as the Fianna Fáil party gears up for next year’s general election.

While his predecessor was being grilled at the banking inquiry in Dublin about the economic crisis which brought the country to its knees, the current party leader looked relaxed on a sunny walkabout in the town centre.

He was joined by Cllr John Brassil – who is one of the candidates chosen by the party to contest for a seat in the new five seat constituency –  local Cllr Norma Foley and Senator Mark Daly.

He called into local businesses and talked to people in the streets before heading off to Killarney on Friday for another ‘pre-canvass canvass’ with the other FF candidate in the constituency, Cllr Norma Moriarty.

Michael Healy-Rae Gets Taoiseach To Agree To Radio Kerry Interview

water_charges_10
Deputy Michael Healy-Rae.

KERRY South TD Michael Healy-Rae had an unusual request for the Taoiseach last night in the Dáil, eventually getting him to agree to be interviewed on Radio Kerry.

During the Order of Business on Tuesday evening, Healy-Rae said to Enda Kenny that he was the only Taoiseach to have refused to go on Radio Kerry at any stage since he was elected Taoiseach four and a half years ago.

After a lively exchange between Healy-Rae and the Ceann Comhairle, the Taoiseach agreed to go on Radio Kerry’s ‘Kerry Today’ programme.

And here is that lively exchange (below);

Deputy Michael Healy-Rae: The Taoiseach is in a unique position in that he is the only party leader who has refused to go on Radio Kerry to debate current issues.

An Ceann Comhairle: Hold on one second.

Deputy Michael Healy-Rae: This comes under the Government’s policy in the programme for Government on the open—–

An Ceann Comhairle: I can tell the Deputy that it is not an issue for the Order of Business.

Deputy Michael Healy-Rae: No, it concerns the Government’s policy on openness and transparency. I have a question for the Taoiseach. Jerry O’Sullivan has been looking for him to go on Radio Kerry for a long time.

An Ceann Comhairle: The Deputy can table a question or go and talk to him, but he may not raise the issue on the Order of Business.

Deputy Michael Healy-Rae: The Taoiseach is refusing to—–

An Ceann Comhairle: No, I am sorry, the Deputy is totally out of order.

Deputy Michael Healy-Rae: I am sorry, but I am not.

An Ceann Comhairle: The Deputy is totally out of order.

Deputy Michael Healy-Rae: I am not.

An Ceann Comhairle: Will the Deputy, please, resume his seat?

Deputy Michael Healy-Rae: This relates to Government policy on openness and transparency.

An Ceann Comhairle: will the Deputy, please, resume his seat?

Deputy Michael Healy-Rae: I am asking the Taoiseach to go on Radio Kerry—–

An Ceann Comhairle: I do not care what Government policy states; I am dealing with the Order of Business.

Deputy Michael Healy-Rae: —-to talk about current issues, in the way the other party leaders have done.

The Taoiseach: I would be delighted to do so.

Deputy Michael Healy-Rae: I thank the Taoiseach.

An Ceann Comhairle: Please, do not respond.

Deputy Michael Healy-Rae: I thank the Taoiseach.

John Brassil Selected As Fianna Fáil Candidate For Next General Election

Cllr John Brassil.

CLLR John Brassil has been selected to be the Fianna Fail candidate for the Kerry constituency at the next General Election.

Cllr Brassil was elected at the Fianna Fail convention held tonight.

In the first count, with a quota of 597, Cllr Tom McEllistrim got 406 votes followed by Cllr Brassil on 394 with Cllr Foley on 223 and Cllr Michael O’Shea on 168.

However, Cllr Brassil received almost twice as many transfers from Cllr Foley as Cllr McEllistrim, resulting in the Ballyheigue pharmacist emerging victorious.

Cllr Brassil, a father of three, is the current Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council and a former Chairman of Shannon Development.

The 51-year old topped the poll in the Listowel Electoral Area in last year’s local elections.

Fianna Fáil are expected to add another candidate to the ticket, with speculation centred on Cllr Norma Moriarty from Waterville.
