Last month, Tommy went to Spain to take part in the Catalonia Cycling Challenge, tackling some of the highest peaks in the area and his final challenge was to climb 1,000,000 metres by the end of the year, which just completed this week.

“I didn’t think I’d do it with almost three months to spare so I’m delighted,” said Tommy who had been training hard for the challenges all year. He now hopes people will support Enable Ireland which provides disability services to over 9,000 children and adults across Ireland.

Tommy is a fundraiser extraordinaire for Enable Ireland and is well-known throughout Kerry and further afield for his 8-hour spinning sessions he undertakes for the charity.

In September, Tommy will travel to Spain to take part in the Catalonia Cycling Challenge. A week of tough cycling tackling some of the highest peaks in the area awaits him. His final challenge sees him attempt to climb as astounding 1,000,000 metres by the end of the year.

Tommy is a fundraiser extraordinaire for Enable Ireland and is well-known throughout Kerry and further afield for his 8-hour spinning sessions he undertakes for the charity.

Tommy says: “With COVID it’s been hard to organize the spinning sessions in retail outlets so this year I’ve set myself a series of tough cycles – the toughest yet. The Everesting challenge is something I’ve been thinking about for a number of years, I’ve put a huge amount of training in and I think I’m ready.”

Enable Ireland provides disability services to over 9,000 children and adults across Ireland. COVID-19 has severely impacted Enable Ireland’s fundraising and the charity is now facing a loss of €1.5 million in income this year.

Sean Scally from Enable Ireland adds “Many of their traditional fundraising events had to be postponed, This has led to a huge fall in income for Enable Ireland in Kerry, yet they still need to provide vital disability services to children and families across the county. We are delighted that Tommy has continued to support our services in Kerry and everyone in the organization wishes him every success in his challenges. We would encourage everyone to support him in his fundraising efforts”.

I can see at first had the work Enable Ireland do in the community and I’m delighted to support them any way I can.”

Join Tommy For An Epic Cycle Up The Alps This July

.
Tommy Sheehy will be taking part in his toughest challenge yet this summer.

ENABLE Ireland Kerry is looking for cyclists to take part in a serious challenge this July riding through the Italian Alps and Dolomites, tackling many of the most famous Giro climbs and highest roads Europe has to offer.

Tommy Sheehy, who has raised tens of thousands over the years for Enable Ireland Kerry, will be taking part in the cycle from July 1 to July 8, where participants will tackle some of Europe’s most iconic climbs.

“This trip is not for the faint hearted,” said Sean Scally from Enable Ireland.  “It’s not a holiday but a once in a life time experience. We’ll get you there, we will look after your bike, your food, your accommodation but unfortunately you will have to do the rest”.

Some of the climbs involved include:

• The Passo del Mortirolo. Known as the “leg breaker” with an average gradient of 10.5% and a maximum of 18% topping out at 1852m,

• The Gavia. This is often a showstopper in the Giro as in late May/early June the summit is often still caked in snow – but the Giro still tries pass the impassable. La Gazzetta dello Sport has described the Gavia as a Nordic, Northern, Polar Journey.

• The Passo dello Stelvio. Arguably, the purest, most exhilarating, mountain playground accessible to a cyclist. The climb is 21.9km, averages 7.1% and tops out at a whopping 2,758m. The decent winds its way through 48 hairpin bends and is a man made work of Asphalt art.

• The Avelengo. This climb is 8.8km long, but averages 10.9% with the last ramp a very cruel 16%.

• Monte Grappa q 21.1km climb with an average gradient of 6.3% not so bad you might think but at 7km the road ramps up to a nasty 20%.

Each day will bring a series of exhilarating climbs to challenge only the most experienced cyclists.

Enable Ireland Kerry Services are looking to put together a team from Kerry who will take part in this exciting trip and raise funds for our services.

Tommy Sheehy, who is originally from Castleisland, climbed Mount Ventoux in aid of Enable Ireland. The challenge covered Lyon to Nice over the rugged French countryside.

The money raised by Tommy will be used to support Enable Ireland services in Kerry. To date Tommy has raised over €53,000 for the organisation through seven mammoth tours in total.

Money also raised through ‘spinnings’ – events where Tommy cycles continuously on an exercise bike in public for up to eight hours.

The cheque handover was extra poignant because of the loss of Tommy’s mother Kitty last week. Kitty was a huge supporter of Enable Ireland down the years and a driving force for Tommy in his endeavours to cycle mountain after mountain for charity.

Sean Scally of Enable Ireland in Kerry expressed his sympathy at the passing of Kitty Sheehy. “We want to thank the whole family for all the work she did over the years, we really do appreciate it,” said Sean.

“Tommy has been fantastic, the amount of fundraising he does is incredible. He’s out nine months of the year, added to all the planning and organising that goes along with it,” said Sean.
