Marking The ‘Season Of Creation’ In Diocese Of Kerry

.

THE Diocese of Kerry is joining dioceses across Ireland and Christian churches globally in calling for action, to ‘Restore Our Common Home’ during this ‘Season of Creation’.

The Season of Creation runs from September 1st to October 4th when Christian churches around the world focus on prayer and action to protect the natural world or creation, ‘our common home’.

This time can be described as the churches’ eco time. It closes on the 4th of October, the feast day of St Francis of Assisi, Patron Saint of Ecology.

.

The words ‘Our Common Home’ are those used by Pope Francis in his letter ‘Laudato Si’ on Care for Our Common Home’, addressed “to every person living on the planet”.

All 53 parishes across the diocese are being encouraged to mark the Season in some way.

Parishes have received copies of the Season of Creation Leaflet 2021 – Restoring our Common Home, which explains the theme and gives suggestions of practical actions to be taken in the areas of: caring for God’s creatures; biodiversity; energy; avoiding food waste and reducing plastic pollution.

Parishes have also received the necessary resources to include the theme in Sunday Masses during the 5-week Season. The Season of Creation Leaflet 2021 is available on the diocesan website www.dioceseofkerry.ie and the diocesan Facebook page.

The diocesan aim is that each parish plants a native Irish Tree on church grounds in time for National Tree Day in October.

The Radio Kerry programme ‘Horizons’, the daily ‘Just a Thought’ and the diocesan Facebook page will all highlight the theme throughout the Season.

On September 16th the Diocesan Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation Committee (JPIC) will host a free webinar focusing on the importance of protecting precious habitats, featuring two Kerry projects The Curlew Conservation Programme and The Pearl Mussel Project.

Speakers include Patricia Deane, MacGillycuddy Reeks European Innovation Partnership (EIP), Hubert Servignat, Curlew Conservation Programme and Dr Mary Catherine Gallagher, Pearl Mussel Project. The devastation of the Killarney National Park will also be a focus.  The focus for the webinar is on positive action.

THERE was the usual excitement at Holy Family NS on Monday morning for the new arrivals.

In fact, the juniors weren’t the only ones beginning at Holy Family. A new principal, Maria O’Regan, was also starting her time at the school having taken over from Ed O’Brien who has just retired.

There are 18 junior infants beginning their schooldays this week and they were immediately made feel welcome by teacher Mrs Morrissey and SNA Denise McGrath when they arrived.

By the time we visited on Tuesday to take some pictures, the little ones were well settled in and having fun. Scroll down for photos…

Kerry Schools Invited To Take Part In Blue Star Programme

.

PRIMARY school pupils in Kerry and around Ireland are being challenged to get creative in how they learn and think about Europe through the Blue Star Programme, coordinated by European Movement Ireland.

The Blue Star Programme teaches primary school children about Europe through creative activities and projects that complement the national primary curriculum.

Each participating class carries out projects on history, geography, the institutions of the EU, culture and creativity with a European twist. Teachers and their classes can be creative and tailor their projects to their own individual needs and interests.

.

Conscious of the ongoing challenges posed by Covid-19 that face schools, teachers and pupils returning this September, the Blue Star Programme team will offer participating schools continued support and a fully-flexible, curriculum-friendly programme with additional online resources and activities.

Teachers, parents, guardians, carers and the whole school community are encouraged to get involved in Blue Star Programme projects, creating an awareness of the EU and European cultures that reaches far beyond the school walls and out into the wider community.

Since the beginning of the programme in 2011, almost 100 schools in Kerry have participated of almost 1,100 overall across the country.

Primary schools interested in taking part in the Blue Star Programme 2021-2022 can register hereanytime until October 5, 2021. Further information about the programme can be found at www.bluestarprogramme.ie .

AND so the fun begins.

Monday saw the arrival of nearly 40 new children to CBS Primary School and the beginning of a wonderful educational journey.

Friends for life were made in Ms Quirke and Ms Donoghue’s classes in the new, impressive extension to the school which opened this time last year, although some of the children were already familiar with each other from attending the on-site pre-school facility.

Both teachers said the children had already settled in well by the time we visited to take some pictures on Tuesday morning. Scroll down for photos…
