Speaking after being named Kerry FC Captain, Matt Keane said; “It is a very proud moment for me to be named captain for Kerry FC in the club’s first-ever season in the League of Ireland. It’s a great honour to lead out such a brilliant group of fellas, having worked with the group for the last 6 weeks, I can see the talent and quality is there and the potential we have to cause a few upsets this year. So look, I can’t wait to get out and lead the boys out in front of a packed house in Mounthawk Park on Friday night

Wayne Guthrie, the vice-captain of Kerry FC.

Vice-Captain Wayne Guthrie said; “I’m delighted to be named vice-captain by the players. It’s a great honour to be picked by my teammates and I appreciate the lad’s trust in me to take on this honour of being vice-captain for Kerry FC. We are all looking forward to Friday night and for the season ahead”

First-Team Manager Billy Dennehy said; “It is a landmark moment for Matt and obviously being the first captain of Kerry Football Club is a proud achievement for him and his family.

The way that we go about this as a group is that we are looking for leaders all over the group, all over the squad in all areas, but Matt has really come to the fore over the last number of weeks in the way that he trains, his attitude and his application in training and still looks to improve in every training session.

He leads by example in a lot of ways and I’m delighted for him to be the first captain here at the club. The players are also delighted to have him as captain and are very happy for Matt. I am looking forward to seeing how he takes to the role and how he brings the younger players along with him”

Billy Dennehy on Vice-Captain Wayne Guthrie: “Wayne is a player who showed a huge appetite to come into Kerry FC and be a part of the club and be in amongst the group here in Kerry Football Club.

“That has obviously been recognised by all his teammates as well in relation to him being selected as Vice-Captain for the upcoming season. Delighted for Wayne, he has a good personality. He can bring his experience from his GAA background over to us and the experience of playing on big occasions will stand to him as well. A proud day for himself and his family, many congratulations to him for being named vice-captain of the club”.

COLÁISTÍ….ROCK PLAYERS IN COLLEGE GAMES: (i) Unfortunately, ní raibh rith an ráis le Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí ar an bhFearann Fuar on Saturday. Although the will amongst the team was strong and the support was thar barr, Castle Island’s Coláiste Phádraig brought a level of intensity, particularly in midfield, that was difficult to replicate. They played at an A Division standard.

There were a few flourishes from the Gaelcholáiste, responding well to a tough opening few minutes, with four points in quick succession, and a fantastic long-range save from Maidhcí Ó Ficheallaigh as half-time approached.

However, ar an drochuair, the physicality of the Coláiste Phádraig side saw the day out for them agus bhí an suvae leo! Is in Oileán Ciarraí a bheidh Corn Sheáin Uí Mhurchú le linn 2023!

Gaelcholáiste players, particularly ár Stacaigh dhiongbháilte chróga, Cian Ó Duilleáin agus Luke agus Gavin Ó Cathasaigh, chomh maith le muintir na séú bliana, ar nós Jack Ó Dúghaill, never relented, however.

Go dtí’n bhliain seo chugainn, a Ghaiscígh….! Recover over the holidays and reflect on how successful a season it’s been for muintir Thobar Mhaigh Dor! (Dáithí Ó Loinsigh)

(ii) Good luck to the Meánscoil Chnoc an tSeabhaic players in their Munster Schools Senior B final. Bhur seacht ndícheall, a leaideanna! Rockites on the panel: Holly Ní Bhriain, Róise Ní Dhónaill, Máire de Mórdha and Gráinne Ní Riada.

FAOI 15: (i) Training continued this week with sessions on Friday and on Sunday evenings. On Sunday we continued our blended training with some indoor strength and conditioning work and them some on-field work.

We encourage the boys to practice the exercises at home….it’s only a few minutes a day, boys. The volunteer coaching team so far this year working with U15 boys is Theo Diggin, Pa Laide, Ger Hobbert, Ronan Kavanagh, Morgan O’Connell, Frankie Murphy.

(ii) Two tournament organising committees have invited us to take part in their early season competitions: an Ghaeltacht in February and Nemo Rangers, Cork, in March. We hope to send teams to both events. (Ger Hobbert)

FAOI 17: ‘Well done’ to our boys who did so well v Ardfert on Saturday last (11th Feb) and were 0-3 ahead nuair a shéid an réiteoir an fheadóg dheireanach. Our stalwarts: Steven Conway; James Fisher (captaen), Pádraig O’Halloran, Tomás Ó Conaill (0-1); Alex Touhy (1-1), Seán Heaslip, Ciarán Kavanagh; David Lucid (0-1), Fionnán Ryan; Jack Barrett, Tomás Deregee, Liam Ó Conaill; Cormac Bastible (1-8….six frees), Oiliver Lata (1-0), Ryan McMahon; Rory Lynch, Jake O’Connor, Bao Foley; Barry Nagle, Rory Ó Loinsigh, Gavin Ó Cathasaigh, Donnacha Horgan, Jack Barrett. Killarney Man Looks Forward To Season With Kerry FC

.
Steven McCarthy of Kerry FC.

KERRY FC has announced the signing of Steven McCarthy ahead of the 2023 SSE Airtricity First Division campaign which gets underway this Friday.

The 24-year-old striker has played his whole career with Kerry District League side Killarney Celtic winning multiple league titles and cups along with appearing in various FAI Junior Cup encounters.

Although without League of Ireland experience, Steven has had a good handle on the game having first donned the green and white hoops of Killarney Celtic at 6 years of age.

Continued below…

.

Steven becomes Kerry FC’s 29th and final signing ahead of the season starting on Friday night.

Speaking on his signing, Steven McCarthy said; “I’m delighted to sign for Kerry FC. It is a great opportunity for me to go and test myself at this level. I’m looking forward to the season opener on Friday night and hopefully, we can start our first-ever campaign with a win.

First-Team Manager Billy Dennehy said “Steven is a player who has spent his whole career playing local football in the Munster Senior League and with Killarney Celtic where he has done really well.

“But I think Steven is a player that has the ability to play at a higher level. For me, when I see players like that, there are one or two questions I must ask. Are they comfortable at the level they are at or have they never had the opportunity to go onto the next level? For me, seeing the way Steven has been training and working the last couple of weeks has shown me that he does have that ambition to play at a higher level but never had the option here in Kerry.

“I am absolutely delighted to give him that opportunity now. I think his technical ability is something we have seen already and I think the fitter he gets and more accustomed to our style of play, he will only improve in the coming years. I think he has done well for Killarney Celtic over a large number of years so we are very thankful to them for keeping him involved in the game and giving him the platform to develop his talents over a number of years”.

Shane Joins Brother Wayne In The Kerry FC Family

.
Shane Guthrie

KERRY FC has announced the signing of Shane Guthrie ahead of the 2023 SSE Airtricity First Division campaign which gets underway this Friday.

The 38-year-old League of Ireland veteran has teamed up with the Kerry FC squad ahead of the new season to represent his native county in the club’s maiden year at this level. Shane is a brother to Kerry FC goalkeeper Wayne Guthrie giving a family feel to our defensive strength.

In his early career, Shane played underage football in Kerry with St Brendan’s Park, Kingdom Boys and Tralee Dynamos.

Continued below…

.

Shane moved on to the Kerry Under 21 setup before signing for Cork City in 2003. From Cork, Shane went to Kilkenny City on loan in the First Division before joining Shamrock Rovers where he claimed his first of three First Division titles.

He moved to Cobh Ramblers in 2007 where Shane won his second First Division titles, before stints with Galway United, St Patricks Athletic and Dundalk.

He won the Leinster Senior Cup with St Pats in 2011 before moving to Limerick FC in 2012 when he was part of the squad that won the First Division and the Munster Senior Cup. Most recently, the centre-back has been playing for Tralee Dynamos in the Kerry District League.

Speaking on his signing for Kerry Football Club, Shane said; “Absolutely delighted to sign for Kerry FC. The work that has been put in to get to this stage is phenomenal. But it is long overdue that this county has a team represented in the League of Ireland. To be involved in that bit of history is unreal. Can’t wait to get it started and bring the buzz back to Mounthawk Park.“

First-Team Manager Billy Dennehy said “Shane is a Kerry player who has gone on to represent some of the biggest clubs in the country. He is also a good friend of mine who has a great attitude to the game and great professionalism in the way he trains and in terms of how he looks after his body and how he approaches the game. That will be a big advantage to the younger players to be able to learn from and grow from as well. So I am really looking forward to having him in and I suppose a nice ending chapter in his career at League of Ireland level to be able to bow out representing your home town club. Hopefully, he will be able to get another few years out of it yet for us”.
