BRENDA MCMAHON: All in the Club and the local community were saddened to learn of the death at the weekend of Brenda McMahon (nee Foley), The Glebe, Cloonalour and late of Basin View.
Brenda’s family association with the Club goes back to the very beginning when her father (John Foley) was one of the founding members of the Club in 1917 – ninety eight years ago.
Then her late husband (Timmy) was one the great players of the fifties, and he continued his involvement thereafter as Mentor of many teams, included the Co. Championship winning side of 1973. After that, sons Charles and Martin played for many years with the Club.
We extend sincere sympathy to Brenda’s immediate family, Helena, Margaret, Charles and Martin, her brother John and sisters Maureen and Ina and to all her grand children and great grand children and all her extended family and friends.
SYMPATHY: Sincere sympathy is also offered to the families of the following who died recently – Neilus O’Sullivan, Shanakill and late of O’Rahillys Villas; James Campbell, Woodlee, Monavalley and late of Templeogue (Dublin), Charlestown (Mayo) and London; Davy Finn, Shanakill and late of Mitchels Crescent; and William Flanagan, Clahane, Ballyard.
SENIOR HURLING: St. Pats (East Kerry) 2-9; Austin Stacks 5-14.
At Fossa on last Wednesday (17th June) both sides played some good open Hurling in this 2nd round of the Co. Senior Hurling League (Div. 3). A hat trick of first half goals by Colm Ó Giollagáin (for good measure Colm added a fourth in the second half) left us with a commanding lead at the break (4-6 to 0-6).
The second half was a lot closer with we just shading it on the score board (1-8 to 2-3).
In all eight different players got on the score sheet but their job was made that much easier by the quality of ball coming in from our defenders and mid field, notably, Ciarán Breen, Andrew Morrissey, Paul Daly (when playing centre back in the first half) and Peter O’Regan in the second half when he switched with Paul.
Our other first half goal-scorer was Andrew Foley and apart from Andrew and Colm there was also some beautiful point scoring from Shane Fitzgerald, Paul Daly, Breandán Caball, Ronan Gilsenan, Michael O’Leary and Seán Hartnett.
Team captain, Danny Maguire was soundness personified in goals, with some good defending also by Kevin O’Leary and Paudie Bradley. Both sides had just six wides each during the whole game and all our 19 scores came from play.
Team: Danny Maguire (Capt), Kevin O’Leary, No Full Back, Ciarán Breen, Paudie Bradley ,Paul Daly (0-1), Andrew Morrissey, Shane Fitzgerald (0-1), Andrew Foley (1-1), Breandán Caball (0-3), Peter O’Regan, Ronan Gilsenan (0-4), Colm Ó Giollagáin (4-2), No Full Forward, Michael O’Leary (0-1).
