PEIL FAOI 12: Training continues in Connolly Park at 11am on Sundays for the Under 12 boys. Huge numbers (of both players and coaches!) have been the order of the day so far and all are readying for a very enjoyable and hopefully very fruitful 2017 season.
PEIL FAOI 14: (i) Our Sunday training time is from 4pm to 5pm. See you all in Connolly Park! Fáilte roimh chách!
(ii) What a good start to the season for the Austin Stack Club Under 14 footballers! We travelled to Nemo Rangers on Saturday last, had a great day out and won the Mick O’Brien Shield, which our captain, Dean Rusk, happily accepted on behalf of all. Maith sibh, a leaideanna! Our first match was against the hosts, Nemo, and, with a strong performance, we won well…5-7 to 1-3.
Next up was Oranmore na Gaillimhe and, in a terrific game of football, we came out on top…5-8 to 4-3. However, the match took its toll on our lads and unfortunate injuries and fatigue caught up on us and we lost our next two matches.
St. Vincents defeated us…5-7 to 4-1…agus bhuaigh An Ghaeltacht orainn le dhá chúilín…3-3 in aghaidh 1-7. With a break before the shield final, our stalwarts were able to rest and regroup. By the time the ball was thrown in for our final challenge, our boys were raring to go and with a dominant display we defeated Nemo Rangers…4-6 to 0-4.

FADÓ FADÓ: Kerry won a 2nd All-Ireland in 1904 with Austin Stack as captain. He was also secretary of the County Board. Later, he served as chairman and president and he represented the county on the Munster and Central Councils.
He had a motion passed at the 1908 Congress that resulted in all GAA accounts being audited (checked) by chartered accountants. He was responsible for collective training by the county team in 1913 before Kerry played Louth for the Croke Cup.
‘The collective training became a ritual….sprints, skipping, physical jerks, practice with the ball and trial games twice a week,’ wrote Pat ‘Aeroplane’ Ó Sé in his memoirs. That training system continued for 50 years and more. Then there was the other side to Austin.
Like his Fenian father, he embraced the freedom movement. (The Fenian Rising was in 1867). The GAA volunteer became the Irish Volunteer and he was appointed commandant of the Kerry No. 1 Brigade in 1916.
He was arrested at the time of Roger Casement’s capture and was jailed (for 20 years!) but was released in the general amnesty of 1917. He was jailed again in 1918 and went on hunger strike in Belfast.
By 1919 he was Minister of Home Affairs as well as spending a little time in Strangeways Prison, Manchester, from where he escaped.
Yes, he was certainly involved in the war of Independence! Kerry refused to play in the 1923 All-Ireland until he was released from Mountjoy Jail! Bhí ardmheas ag muintir na Ríochta ar an Stacach. No wonder the Rock Street Club ‘took’ his name!
