David Drums His Way To Student Of The Year Award

LAST Sunday at Collis-Sandes House saw students of the Yamaha School of Music competing for silverware and bursaries in an exciting curtain closing event to the school year.

Throughout the week, students were ably assessed by invited adjudicator Mr. Angel Climent who is a composer native to Valencia in Spain. Entrants from across fourteen musical disciplines vied for one of twelve Student of the Year final places.

“The standard was startlingly high this year, our sixth year running the event, so congratulations to all our students young and old,” said school principal Mr. Declan Walsh. “I am very pleased with the turnout that we have had all week. We were treated to some very mature performances and some very talented new starlets emerged from the junior categories, also. Kerry is clearly awash with diverse musical talent!”

This year’s Student of the Year title was awarded to David Kearney from Ballyduff. His stunning performance on the drum kit was enough to see off all challengers on the day.

His father, Anthony, said that; “It was his focused practice this year which got him there. I am very happy for him because he worked hard for this.”

David is the recipient of the coveted school perpetual shield and a full year’s bursary for tuition at the Yamaha School of Music.
