Hundreds Pay Their Respects To The Late Doreen Kenny

TRALEE saw one of the biggest funerals in a long time on Monday and Tuesday as Doreen Kenny (nee Sheehy), Caherslee, was laid to rest.

Hundreds lined up at Gleasure’s Funeral Home on Monday night to pay their respects, while similar numbers attended the funeral mass at St John’s Church on Tuesday morning before burial at Rath Cemetery.

Doreen was a daughter of the legendary Kerry footballer John Joe Sheehy and sister of famous footballing brothers Paudie, Niall and Sean Og who wore the green and gold with distinction in the 1950s and 60s.

Doreen was also well known as Tralee Carnival Queen in 1957, which was the fore-runner to the Rose of Tralee.

She was very involved with the golf scene in Kerry and served as Lady Captain of Tralee Golf Club in 1972 and Lady President in 1995 and also in Ballybunion as Lady Captain in 1983 and Lady President in 2004.

She was married to Dermot ‘Sam’ Kenny, who sadly passed away in 2008.

Doreen is survived by her sons Brendan and Paudie, her daughter-in-law Dawn, grandsons Marc and Adam, brothers Niall, Séan Og and Brian, sister Kay, nieces and nephews, extended family and a huge circle of friends.
