Kerins O’Rahillys GAA Club News

.

Seniors:

Our opening game in this year’s Tralee town league took place on Sunday at a windswept Churchill where we took on the locals. The team was largely experimental with many younger players making their debuts.

We had the benefit of the wind in the first half and enjoyed a half time lead of 3 points, 0-08 to 0-05 with some fine scores from Diarmuid O’Sullivan ( free) & Conor Hayes who was proving a real handful for the Churchill defence.

The second half was the turn of our defence to shine and this they did, restricting Churchill to 4 second half points, the first not coming until the 16th minute. At that stage we had led by 6, with Barry John, Conor Hayes and Ben Hanafin very much to the fore. In this period Chucky was dominant at centre back with Jake Foley very much in control at full back.

The coup de grace was applied in the final minutes when Conor Hayes found the net after good inter play between Barry John, Ben Hanafin and Fenton Colllins.

The final score of 1-12 to 0-09 was reflective of our superiority.

Team: Rob O’Connor, Barry Foley, Jake Foley, Stephen Nix, Seán Collins, Chucky, TJ Heaphy, Diarmuid O’ Sullivan, Fenton Collins, Ben Hanafin, Barry John, Daniel Bowler, Conor O’Sullivan, Gazza, Conor Hayes.

Subs used: Jordan Foley, Ben O’Brien, Gearoid Hartnett, Ross O’Callaghan, Seán Collins & Shane Flavin.

Scorers: Conor Hayes (1-07), Gazza ( 0-03), Barry John (0-01), Diarmuid ( 0-01).

Next week’s scheduled fixture vs St Pat’s has been postponed and will take place at a later date.

Kerry:

Kerry were dealt a hammer blow in Castlebar when losing to a strong Mayo outfit on a final scoreline of 2-14 to 1-10.

Mayo dominated the first half and led by 2-08 to 0-03 at half time but the introduction of David Clifford and Seanie O’Shea added much needed firepower to the attack and despite never looking likely to win they pegged back to score to a more respectable margin.

Much food for thought therefore for Micheál Quirke and Co as Kerry welcome Armagh to Austin Stack Park next weekend, Sat 25th where throw in is @ 17.00

U20s:

The Kerry U20s suffered their second defeat in the John Kerins Cup when losing to Dublin on Sat last on a scoreline of 2-14 to 2-11; Kerry now prepare for the upcoming Munster championship where they will play the winners of Tipperary/Clare on Monday 17th April in the Munster semi final – should Tipperary advance the game will be played at a Tipp venue but if Clare are victorious Kerry will have a home draw.

Limerick had a long journey to Ardee in Round 3 of their national league programme and were on the wrong side of a 1-15 to 1-13 scoreline as Mickey Harte’s side dug deep to achieve the spoils.

ONE GOOD COACH

Now that our football season is underway, we have arranged for Frank O Rahilly, from our local Jigsaw centre, to deliver a one hour workshop called “One Good Coach.”

Monday 27th February at 7p.m. in the Pat Healy Room in the club.

This is aimed at all adults who are involved with our teams. It will build our understanding of youth mental health and how adults can impact positively on this, particularly through sport.

No doubt it will reinforce all the great work being done in our Club, and give some fresh ideas that we can incorporate this year.

We are looking forward to a full turnout from the Senior, Juvenile and Ladies sections of our Club.

AWARDS NIGHT

A fantastic night was held  to celebrate with our nine teams …

A little later than planned but the ladies in Strand Road rounded off 2022 , their most successful year to date with an awards ceremony in the Pat Healy room last Friday evening.

What a turnout we had with many proud parents and grandparents meeting up and having a cuppa, a bite to eat and a chat. Congrats girls!

A special word of thanks to Declan Quill who took the time to present each player with her medals, gave words of encouragement and spoke about the importance of sport for one’s well being . Gaelic football for ladies is the fastest growing sport in Europe.

Our club encompasses players from all over the parish of Tralee and has gone from strength to strength.

Thanks to Ivan Pituch for the fab photos. Many thanks also to our coaches who gave a short talk to everyone!

Looking forward to seeing many more excellent displays of football from everyone in 2023 and most importantly watching the girls enjoy their football.
