A FATHER and son from Tralee are recovering in a Dublin hospital this week after a life-saving kidney transplant in the Beaumont Hospital was a success.

Mike Burns, originally from Sneem, but now living with his family in Kevin Barry Villas, donated his kidney to his son, 19 year old son Darren, who was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney disease when he was just nine years old.

Despite a disciplined medication and dietary regime, Darren’s condition deteriorated in 2013 and he was told four months ago that he needed the kidney transplant.

Mike, who work for Slattery’s Fuels in Boherbee, proved a match and they both underwent the five-hour surgery in Beaumont Hospital on Monday. It was a success with Mike and Darren – both members of Na Gaeil GAA club – in recovery now.

Best wishes to them both.
