GREAT excitement filled Moyderwell during the week as Anne Culloty, Kerry Health Promotion Officer with the HSE came to announce that Moyderwell Primary School has been awarded its first Health Promoting Flag.

This is a wonderful formal recognition of all the health promotion initiatives that are run throughout the school.  Anne praised the children and staff for their continued commitment to support healthy eating, well-being & exercise throughout the school.

During the past year, there has been a huge emphasis in the reduction of daily sugar intake. Pupils completed projects about the high level of sugars in every day foods and consequently made changes to their family’s shopping list. Moyderwell is very fortunate to have a free healthy lunch scheme in place which is offered to every child in the school from a company called Carambola.

Some of the other initiatives that contributed to their award include: Friends for Life Programme, Incredible Year’s Positive Behaviour Management Programme, Stay Safe Programme etc.

The children also partake in a wide range of sporting activities which include: football, hurling, soccer, rugby, swimming, athletics, dance and regular P.E. classes.

Moira Quinlan, Principal and Brenda Coughlan, Moyderwell Health Promotion Coordinator raised the new flag & each pupil from the Health Promoting Working Group received a certificate of recognition for their dedication to the project.
