Na Gaeil GAA Club News

Na GaeilSCÓR: The Scór County Final was held in Killarney racecourse on Friday 20th November.Na Gaeil had participants in four categories; The Léiriú; the Recitation; the Ballad Group;  and the Solo Singing.

The standard this year was phenomenally high and all four had excellent performances with the Léiriú managing to secure a county medal and a place in the Munster final next January.

The contestants for the Léiriú were – Barry Sugrue, Michelle Doody, Jack Costelloe, Áine O’Sullivan, Dearbhla Quirke, Jimi O’Suilleabháin and Jack Bourke.

Their ‘sketch’ told a story of the children of 1916 and in particular the family of Bridget McKane who sadly was killed during the Rising.  Each of the young thespians gave it 100% and their performances were outstanding.

One could hear a pin drop in the final sad minute which required emotional acting from all the cast.  Their many hours of rehearsing paid off.  We wish them every success going forward.
Jimi O’Suilleabháin recited a piece by Eamon Kelly called “the Umbrella”.

Jimi entertained the audience with a stunning performance showing maturity beyond his years. The standard of the other six performers was equally high and the result was tough to call. At the end of the night Jimmi was rewarded with a silver medal which was well deserved.

He is a credit to his family who are justifiably proud of him. Well done to Jimi who looked like he enjoyed himself on stage as much as we certainly enjoyed watching him!

Barry Sugrue was our solo singer and performed a beautiful rendition of “Down by the Sally Gardens”. Faced with extremely strong performances from the six other competitors, Barry did us proud and while he did not place this time, received fantastic feedback from the judges on the night.

The Ballad Group were, Rosin Collins, Seamus Harty, Emily  Hayes, Dominic Hurley and Barry Sugrue.

They got together as a group for this year’s Scor na nOg competition and their excellent performance of both “The Contender” and ” The Foggy Dew” earned them a silver medal on the night.

In a competition where the upper age limit is  17, the Group, all aged 13 and 14 give us great hope for the future. Roll on next year!! A huge congratulations to all concerned!

NA GAEIL U16 LADIES: Na Gaeil v Kerins O Rahillys, U16 Town League Shield Final. We played in the ITT on Friday night under lights for the last U16 game of the year against Kerins O Rahillys. The rain subsided as the game started. Sarah Quigley started in goals as she is making a comeback after injury.

With Sarah making great kickouts with her left foot and some greats saves, she managed not to concede any goals. She was greatly helped with Aimee, Maura, Dearbhla, Grainne, Mary and Muireann defending strongly in front of her.

Nora scored 3 fine points from great runs made from midfield. Meagan scored a point after another mazy run from midfield. Jadyn and Erika were working hard on the half forward line creating scores for our corner forwards. Ciara found Caoimhe with a fine pass with Caoimhe burying it into the back of the net.

Blaithnaid followed this with 2 more goals with Sibeal scoring 1.03 from play. Abi and Caragh came on and straight away hit the ground running scoring 1.01 each. Clodagh moved into midfield and put on a great display. Brid came into the forwards and nearly nicked a goal before Caoimhe finished off the game with another goal.

Well done to all the girls and especially to the girls who are leaving the U16’s Nora, Sarah, Blaithnaid, Caoimhe and Nessa. Best of luck girls.Team: Sarah Quigley(C), Clodagh O Connor, Grainne Early, Mary O Connell, Muireann Moriarty, Nora O Connell(C), Jadyn Lucey, Erika O Sullivan, Meagan Sheehy, Ciara Gaynor, Blaithnaid O Connor, Caoimhe Hanafin, Caragh O Neill, Abi Casey, Dearbhla Quirke, ,Brid Sinnott, Aimee Kerins,Maura Adams,Sibeal Casey.

NA GAEIL U15 LADIES: Na Gaeil v Castleisland Desmonds, U15 County Championship Final. We played Castleisland in our last game of the year in Ballymac.

Conditions were fair, Catleisland got off to a great start scoring 2.01 very early in the game, took us a bit of time to come terms with Castleisland’s physical approach.

Erika got us a goal after a pass from Meagan. Castleisland came back down the other end with them forcing another 2 goals. Mary and Sibeal combined together to enable Abi to score a goal.

Aimee, Ria and Maura were starting to come to grips with the game and held Castleisland for the remainder of the 1st half. Ciara and Kay were unlucky not to have a couple of goals each as they had shots scraping the outside of the posts.

Aine had made some fine saves to keep Castleisland at bay. We re arranged ourselves for the 2nd half with Mary, Muireann and Dearbhla pushing forward the half back line. Clodagh came into midfield and held their midfielder quiet with Sarah and Freya helping out the defence.

We were dominating the game a bit more with Erika scoring another goal. Meagan setting up Jadyn for a goal and a point.

Just as we were clawing back the scores, the physicality came back into again with Muireann getting an elbow into the back and Jadyn getting one into the back, stopped our momentum, despite this Caragh came on and scored a goal for us with Brid helping out in the forwards trying to win some high balls.

But alas, we ran out of time and light to try and claw back the poor start that we had. We played with a great spirit all through the year in every game.

Every player should be proud of themselves as to the way they conduct themselves on and off the pitch. Well done to all involved.
