AROUND 270 people attended a special event in Ballygarry House Hotel on Wednesday night to hear Holocaust survivor, Eva Schloss, speak about her experiences.
The acclaimed author and the stepsister of Anne Frank, was present as part of the International Women’s Day Kerry event put on by the Kerry Businesswomen’s Network and the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee.
On the night, there was a drinks reception and a three course meal with the dinner address given by Ms. Deirdre Fanning: Consultant Urologist MBBChBAO (Hons) MMEDSc (Med Ed) MD FRCS (Urology) and Mr. John Curran: Consultant Cosmetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon MB MCh FRCSI (Plast).
Afterwards, RTE’s Ryan Tubridy interviewed Ms Schloss where she described her terrible experiences at the hands of the Nazis.
She also received a special gift from Yolande Nieman, a member of the Kerry Businesswomen’s Network. Yolande’s grandfather, who owned a textile factory in Holland, received a brooch from a Dutch Jew for safekeeping during the War.
Unfortunately, nobody came back to claim the brooch and it has remained in the family since. Yolande decided to present it to Ms Schloss to donate it to the Anne Frank Trust.
