IT was an emotional day at CBS Primary School on Thursday, as the pupils and staff said farewell to a much-loved member of the school family.
Catherine Dolan from Knockmoyle has been school traffic warden for the past 18 years at the school and hung up her ‘lollipop’ this week.
The school held a special celebration to mark her retirement in the hall which was packed with staff and pupils. Principal Denis Coleman described what Catherine meant to all of them.
“Her job was to keep everybody safe and she did a superb job. But with Catherine, it was so much more than a job. Catherine was very much part of our school for the past 16 years. She loved chatting to the boys and girls while keeping them safe.”

An emotional Catherine said a few words to the children; “I always said that they day I leave, I’d leave my heart with all of you. I love each and every one of you. You were all wonderful, I loved your stories and watching you grow up. Your parents should be very proud of ye. Some day I’ll surprise ye and come up to the gate to say hello…and remember the safe cross code!”
Mayor of Tralee, Norma Foley, also spoke and paid tribute to Catherine for her years of service both to CBS and the people of Tralee.
“She has been outstanding and everything school would want. She has been a friend to all you, she minds you and always has a big smile on her face. On behalf of the people of Tralee I’d like to say how proud we are of you Catherine.”
The school made a presentation to Catherine of flowers and a little plaque (above), while Kerry County Council also presented her with a piece of crystal to mark her retirement. Scroll down for photos…
