SPA National School was the place to be last Friday as the students and staff hosted a ‘Wonderful Well Being Day’ in the school to highlight the importance of developing healthy lifestyle habits for all ages.

The theme for the day was ‘Health is Wealth!’ and the whole event was a celebration of fun, food and fitness. In the morning the student council organised a special whole school assembly and lively aerobics session to get everyone moving and to officially launch the day.

Each class participated in a variety of talks where specialist speakers gave presentations on topics such as good dental hygiene, maintaining correct posture, balanced diet and nutrition, sports fitness and training habits as well as developing positive mental health and self care.

The school garden was also a hive of activity later in the morning as classes took turns in harvesting and cooking the vegetables grown in the school garden during the year.

There was a lot of work done, but everyone got to sample some of freshly harvested vegetables beautifully cooked by the members of the School Garden Committee.

The importance of healthy lifestyle choices was also the main lesson of the day. As part of the school’s participation in the European Week of Sport and in association with National Fitness Day, a wide variety of activities were organised for everyone to enjoy.

The students took part in yoga and fitness classes, and a number of different sporting challenges.

The senior students in the school also hosted workshops to celebrate the importance of friendship and to reinforce the school’s ‘bully free’ message.

Members of the Parents Association were also on hand to help out and the whole school were delighted to formally present Elma Walsh of the ‘Live Life’ Foundation with a cheque for €2000 from the school’s Donal Walsh Spa 6K Challenge event held last May.

However, the highlight of the day was the ‘Teachers v Students’ Basketball Shootout contest in the afternoon when the staff took on the 6th class students.

This was a hectic contest with both teams giving their all. However, everyone seemed happy when the final scores were counted and the contest was officially declared a draw.

School Health Co ordinator, Mrs. Griffin Crowe was delighted with the day. “It was a great success! The students really seemed to enjoy the different activities. They are very knowledgeable and are leading the way.”

School Principal, Peter Linehan agreed, “Great credit is due to everyone involved! It’s wonderful to see the collective effort of the whole school, students, staff and parents in promoting health and wellbeing for all”.

Also, on Thursday, Elma Walsh of the Donal Walsh Livelife Foundation popped in to the school accept a cheque of €2,000, the proceeds from May’s Donal Walsh 6k Challenge, from the Parents Association. Scroll down for photos…
