KERRY GAA has lost another great from the past with the death of Jerome O’Shea at the age of 87 after a brief illness.
The Cahersiveen native won three All-Ireland senior medals with the Kingdom in 1953, 1955 and 1959.
Playing at right-corner back, he made his Championship debut for the county in 1952 against Waterford and was a substitute for the 1953 win over Armagh.
The St Mary’s man won his first Sam Maguire Cup in the left corner-back position in the 1955 victory over Dublin and again against Galway in 1959. He also won one National League title. He made 25 championship and 34 league appearances for Kerry.
He later worked as a broadcaster, presenting RTÉ’s first weekly Gaelic Games television show ‘GAA World of Sport’ while pursuing a PHD in UCD. He worked as an economic advisor and representative of the Irish government at the EEC and the United Nations.
O’Shea is survived by wife Margaret and sons Diarmuid, Donal and Conor, the former Ireland rugby full-back and current Italy head coach.
