THE Kerry County Museum features in a New York Times article where a travel writer retraces the footsteps of Roger Casement taking in visits to Banna and Tralee.

Rosie Schaap also found time to stop off for a pint in Bettys Bar on Strand Street, where she wrote it is “a wonderfully cozy spot with a fireplace, a shelf packed with books, weekly traditional music sessions and a dedicated crew of regulars”.

‘In Ireland, Chasing the Ghost of the Rebel Roger Casement’ was the name of the article and the objective of Schaap’s trip over. Along with Bettys, the NYT writer stopped off to see the new Roger Casement exhibition in the Ashe Memorial Hall and described it as “richly informative”.

She had high praise for Helen O’Carroll of the Kerry County Museum, who showed her the exhibition in the museum and took her  to Banna and Ballyheigue to see the memorials, while talking her through Casement’s movements.  Schaap said Helen “is a terrific source of Casement knowledge, a captivating storyteller”.
