GAELSCOIL MHIC EASMAINN was in celebratory mood on Thursday for a visit by President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina.

Hundreds of schoolchildren greeted the president who stopped off at the school – which is named after Roger Casement – before going to the 1916 State commemoration in Banna.

While there he spoke to children and staff about the sacrifices of Roger Casement and the men and women of the 1916 Rising.

The President and wife Sabina, were in jovial mood and joined the children in song and dance as they were about to depart and received presentations from the pupils.

Leaving for Banna, around 20 motorcycles escorted the President’s car as children and onlookers lined the route waving tricolours to see them off. Scroll down for photos from the day…

IT was Blennerville National School’s turn to receive a tricolour and the Proclamation of Independence to mark the 100 year commemoration of the 1916 rising next year.

Delivering the momentous gifts were Sergeant Denis McGarry and Gunner Paul Moynihan from the Irish Army.

Over the past number of months, members of the Irish Defence Forces have distributed handmade tricolours and a copy of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic to more than 3,000 national schools across Ireland.

While at the schools, Sgt McGarry spoke to the children about the history and importance of our national flag.

During the visit  the children got a chance to quiz Sgt McGarry about the 1916 centenary and the army.

Some of the questions included “how many guns do you have?” and other war and weapon-related queries while there were more unusual ones like “are guns made out of fruit and vegetables?” and, oddly, “have you ever seen a cat?”

Marita Ann Crew And Cabra Historical Society Among Those To Lay Wreaths At Sinn Féin Event In Banna

CREW members of the Marita Ann and the Cabra Historial Society will be among those laying wreaths at a Kerry Sinn Féin event on Banna Strand this Saturday.

The event, which begins at 3pm at the promenade, will launch Kerry Sinn Féin’s 1916 Centenary Events programme to be held in the county throughout 2016. Martin Ferris will be the main speaker.

Kerry Sinn Fein will be joined by the Cabra Historical Society, who will be dressed in 1916 period Volunteer costume with rifles. This will be their first outing of 2016 and will also launch their programme of events for 2016.

Cabra Historical Society chose Kerry to launch their events as the county played a pivotal role in the events leading up to the Rising and was the place where the first casualties of 1916 took place.

They will give a demonstration on a number of military drills and will also sing the Volunteers song “Óró, sé do bheatha abhaile” and “Lonely Banna Strand”.

Crew members of the Marita Ann – the ship seized by the Irish Navy just off the south Kerry coast carrying arms intended for the Provisional IRA back in 1984 – will also attend and lay wreaths.

Refreshments and entertainment will be provided in Kate Browne’s afterwards where the programme of events will be officially announced. The programme will include events in Banna, Ballybunion, Ballyduff, Dingle, Killorglin, Rathmore and Tralee.
