DESPITE the cold weather, walkers took to the road and completed day 31 of the 5k a Day January Challenge on Wednesday evening.

The campaign was organised by Colin ‘Poshey’ Aherne in order to raise vital funds for the Donal Walsh LiveLife Foundation, Kerry Cancer Support Group, and the Make a Wish Foundation.

The campaign successfully reached  their target of €12,000. Each day people were asked to do an activity and to donate €1 to the chosen charities.

Breda Dyland, of the Kerry Cancer Support group, said “The awareness raised was absolutely wonderful. It’s not only about the financial support, its also about awareness. We’re a small local charity and the awareness that this has raised this month has been huge, and we hope that it won’t just continue for the month, but continues from now on. Being active is a huge thing for preventing cancer.”

Colin said; “This is what I’ve been trying to promote since I started my own journey, three and a half years ago. Exercise changed my life completely. And what I’m trying to do with this challenge is get people up, get them active, and to help them with their mental health, and to really feel the benefits of exercise.”

Participants took off from the Ashe Hotel and received refreshments and medals on their return. Scroll down for photos…

TODAY is the day. The turkey and ham are well gone, the bottle banks are heaving and changes have had to be made to notches on the belt.

Now it’s time for a change and the perfect start can be made by starting the 5k a day January challenge for positive mental health.

Colin ‘Poshey’ Aherne is the main man behind the campaign which will raise funds for the Donal Walsh Livelife Foundation, Kerry Cancer Support Group and the Make A Wish Foundation.

Last year, Poshey raised an amazing €5,722 for the Donal Walsh Livelife Foundation and Jigsaw Kerry as he took to the road every day to promote positive mental health. A glance at the gofundme page reveals the total for this year is already €10,400.

He is hoping people will make the effort to get active this month for both the body and mind after the excesses of the festive season.

Each day people are asked to do an activity and to donate €1 to the chosen charities. If you complete the 31 days you donate €31 (donating is optional).

The activity each day can involve a 5k walk/run, cycle/swim for 30 minutes, a yoga or Pilates or fitness class for 1 hour.  For more information go to the gofundme page here or check out the Facebook page here

THE launch of the 5k a day January challenge for positive mental health took place in The Ashe Hotel on Tuesday night and already over 150 people have registered to take part.

Colin ‘Poshey’ Aherne was present at the hotel with Elma Walsh from the Donal Walsh Livelife Foundation and Breda Dyland of Kerry Cancer Support Group to launch the fundraiser which will benefit the two charities as well as Make A Wish Foundation.

Both ladies have committed to taking part in the challenge which involves being active every day during January.

“There’s a lot of organisation that goes into it and we’re very appreciative,” said Elma Walsh. “It’s fantastic that so many have registered so far. Hopefully a lot more will sign up before the end of the year, the bellies will be full and they’ll want to get rid of it,” she added.

Breda Dyland was also encouraging people to sign up.

“Not just to raise money from charities, but for the mental and physical well-being. It’s important especially in January to get active and back to fitness. A lot of our service users are using it as an opportunity as we’re starting a walking group for the challenge as part of their recovery.”

THE launch of the 5k a day January challenge for positive mental health will take place in The Ashe Hotel on Tuesday, December 12 at 7pm.

Everyone is invited and people will have the chance to register for the event on the night. Last year, Tralee man Colin ‘Poshey’ Aherne’s efforts raised an amazing €5,722 for the Donal Walsh Livelife Foundation and Jigsaw Kerry as he took to the road every day to promote positive mental health.

This time he is encouraging people to get involved in the activity where the chosen charities are Donal Walsh #Livelife Foundation again, the Kerry Cork Health Link Bus and a donation to Make A Wish.

“So each day you do an activity you donate €1 to the chosen charities,” said Poshey. “So if you complete the 31 days you donate €31 (donating is optional) being a part of the event and benefiting from the effects of excercise is the key. If you complete the 31 day Challenge and donate €31 you will receive a specially designed medal.”

PHOTOS: Poshey’s Final 5k A Day Finishes In Style

CLOUDLESS skies last night provided Colin ‘Poshey’ Aherne with beautiful conditions to complete the final run of his ‘5k a day’ January challenge.

The moon illuminated more than 200 runners as they took off from The Station House in Blennerville at 7.15pm.

His goal was to raise awareness and break the stigma surrounding Mental Health. The people of Tralee rallied behind the idea, raising over €6,000 so far which will be donated through the gofundme page set up by Poshey in aid of the Donal Walsh LiveLife Foundation and Jigsaw Kerry.

The idea came from Vincent O’Leary of the Kerry Crusaders who ran 5k a day in December. Hailed for his passion and commitment, Poshey inspired people throughout the county to become more active and urged them to most importantly, “don’t be afraid to talk”.

A presentation was made to Poshey by Elma Walsh and Jimmy Mulligan as a token of their appreciation of the work he’s done. Scroll down for photos…
