THE annual Farranfore-Maine Valley AC St Stephen’s Day 5k Run and 2k Walk takes place at 12.15pm with Kerry Airport back as one of the main sponsors.

One of the oldest road races in Ireland, it takes place every St. Stephen’s day and has been run since 1961 along the same route.

It starts in Farranfore at the Kerry Mill on the R561 Farranfore-Firies road running almost to Killahane (Chapel) Cross in Firies and returning via the same route. The road is closed to traffic so participants can enjoy the day without having traffic concerns.

This is one of the main sources of funding for the club which is always a popular event with both elite Olympic athletes and fun-runners alike with numbers well in excess of 300 each year.

The winner of the first ever St Stephen’s Day Race, Scartaglin native Tom McCarthy, will be present again to watch his grandson Conor compete in what has always been a fun family day out.

The CEO of Kerry Airport, John Mulhern, said: “We are proud to support this event once again which has been a major part of the Christmas tradition in our community and the surrounding area for decades. We hope everyone enjoys this year’s instalment.”

Life-long member and coach with Farranfore Maine Valley AC, Jerome Crowley, said: “There is also a free 2K fun run/walk starting at 11.00. This is a fantastic opportunity to run-off the excesses of Christmas. The race is one of our major sources of funding for the club which is why the support from Kerry Airport is so important to us. Kerry Airport is rooted in the community and so are we and we are grateful to them for their sponsorship.”

The 5K Timed Race is open to all those aged 13 years and over on race day. (Race permit rules). The St Stephen’s Day 5K Road Race will begin at 12.15pm. Younger runners can take part in the 2K fun run which starts at 11.00 am.

Registration for the event is now open with access via the club’s website and Facebook page. The entry fee is €17.50 which includes all fees. Race numbers can be collected from 10.30am on the day at the GAA Hall in Farranfore Village.

IT was a night when the community of Tralee came together to remember a much-loved Tralee man and the Palliative Care Unit at UHK was the big winner.

Back on Friday, August 3, around 650 people hit the road for the Robert O’Dowd Memorial 5k/10k walk/run and the upshot of it all was that it raised over €12,000 for the facility that cared for Robert during his illness.

Robert was a prominent sportsman and great family man who was John Mitchels through and through. He passed away in March after a battle with cancer.

Some high profile participants were among the runners, including Liverpool FC legend Alan Kennedy, rugby’s Mick Galwey, John Leahy of Tipp hurling fame and Aidan O’Mahony.

The sports stars also took part in a panel discussion later that night in Benner’s Hotel that drew a large crowd and proved a fitting end to the day.

Eoin Kelliher and other members of the organising committee were on hand to present the cheque for €12,070 to Joe Hennebery of Kerry Hospice on Wednesday night.

“The community of Tralee came out in force and we’d like to thank them. I want to thank the committee and the sponsors. It just shows what the people of Tralee can do when they put their mind into it. Hopefully we’ll organise another fundraiser in the future,” he said.

Joe Hennebery thanked Eoin and the committee for their efforts and said any fundraisers in aid of the unit are welcome.

Also attending the presentation were members of Robert’s family, brothers Tommy and Timmy, wife Sandra and daughter Fiona.

“We just like to thank everyone for showing up,” said Tommy O’Dowd. “It was a fabulous turnout for the run and the event in Benner’s and we want to thank them for their kind donations to the unit.”

A NEW 5k/10k event will take place this bank holiday Monday to remember a great servant to the Austin Stacks Club.

The ‘Run for the Rock — Paul Lucey 10km / 5km Memorial Runwill honour the memory of  a proud Austin Stacks man who played with the club and won an All Ireland club medal in 1977. Paul trained many teams and  brought the 1986 and 1994 teams to county championship glory.

Paul had a great love of football but more importantly, a great love of fitness and well being and was very much involved with the Austin Stacks senior ladies team. Sadly Paul passed away in December 2017.

The Austin Stacks club, along with the  Lucey family, believe that this run is a fitting tribute to Paul’s memory and are hoping that this will appeal to a much wider audience than GAA players. This event takes place on Monday, May 7  at 11am, starting at the entrance to Austin Stacks club.  To register for the run click here
