Council Asked To Explore Connecting Ballyseedy Wood Walkway To Ballyseedy Castle Hotel

A LOCAL councillor is asking the Council to look at joining the Ballyseedy walk with a well-known hotel.

Fine Gael Cllr. Jim Finucane has a motion before the meeting of Tralee Municipal District on Monday, that the MD in conjunction with hotel owners would look at the feasibility of connecting the Ballyseedy Castle Hotel walkway to the Ballyseedy Wood Walkway.

Replying to the motion, Council management informed councillors that directly adjoining Ballyseedy Castle, Ballyseedy Wood is a significant Tourism asset and amenity.

However, while connecting the Wood with the Hotel would be beneficial from a tourism perspective, any proposal would first have to undergo Appropriate Assessment Screening as the Wood is classified as an SAC.

Subject to no issues arising, a suitable funding stream would have to be identified to progress the project further.

Section Of Ballyseedy Wood Walkway To Be Completed By December

A SECTION of a walkway at Ballyseedy Wood will be completed later this year.

A motion from Fine Gael Cllr Jim Finucane asked for an update on the river walkway from Ballymullen to Ballyseedy Wood at Monday’s meeting of the Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council.

Council management replied that Tralee MD received ORIS funding of €200,000 to develop an 800m section of the Ballyseedy Wood Amenity Trail which itself progresses the walkway further in the direction of Tralee town.

These works are in mid-construction at present and it is anticipated that they will be completed by end of November.

This project includes for two river crossings of the River Lee which, once installed, will significantly enhance the amenity that is Ballyseedy Wood by way of facilitating a looped walk through the wood measuring circa 5km.

Furthermore, Tralee MD were successful in receiving ORIS funding in 2022 in the amount of €30,000 to enhance the paths within the Wood itself and these works are now complete.

Management said they are keen to progress the remaining section of the walkway connecting to Tralee town at the N86 Castlemaine Road and will strive to identify a suitable funding stream.
