PHOTOS: Events To Suit All Tastes For Culture Night

A VARIETY of free entertainment was laid on all over town for Culture Night on Friday.

Appealing to all tastes and ages, there was music, drama, art, film and much more. The weather was also dry so people were able to move between the events without getting a soaking.

There was South Korean pop music (K-Pop) in the Creative Youth Cafe at KDYS, The Thursday Night Writers launched a book int the Library, an origami exhibition in Syphon on Courthouse Lane, a performance of Catherine Young’s new work “Le Chéile” in Presentation Primary School Hall, drama in the Square, a whole range of events in Siamsa and Kerry County Museum and much more. Here’s What’s Happening In Tralee For Culture Night

CULTURE Night kicks off right across Ireland between the hours of 5.00pm and 11.00pm tonight and there’s a whole lot to do and see around Tralee.

The variety of events on offer ensures there is something that will appeal to everyone, with, tours, talks, screenings and performances that suit all tastes and ages.

The Thursday Night Writers will launch their anthology of work at 6pm in Tralee Library which will also double up as an open mic night.

‘Nightmare at 8’ takes place in the Ballymac Bar. This will feature 10 monologues which contain both humor and horror combined making it light yet exciting celebrating the run up to halloween. It’s on from 8pm – 9:30pm.

Tralee’s newest coffee bar and lounge, Syphon on Courthouse Lane, will host ‘The Secret Garden’ from 6pm to 11pm. This will be an Origami installation of floral pieces that make up a large scale indoor paper garden. Visitors will enter and seek out the Secret Garden and be amazed by it’s colourful presence.

An evening of world music, dance and song kicking off with a performance of Catherine Young’s new work “Le Chéile” – followed by a world music ceilí, where everyone gets to join in, takes place at the Presentation Primary School Hall from 7.30pm to 9pm.

Experience the upbeat nature of African dance and drumming, Palestinian Dabke Dance, and traditional Ceilí dances.

There will be a series of dramatic and comic pieces in site specific outdoor venues in Tralee including The Square and Tralee Town Park from 6pm – 8pm.

Taking place at the 321 Down syndrome Kerry shop on High Street, ‘Literature with Lámh’ will feature readings by author Anthony Garvey, the Kerry Rose Sally Ann Leahy and the Creative Writing Group all interprested with Lámh sign language, catering for children and adults with spcial needs and with Down Syndrome. It’s on from 5pm – 7pm

The Imperial Hotel will host ‘A Cultural look from St Patrick to Micheal D’ from 8pm to 1opm. This is a play that takes a humorous  look at culture in Ireland. From St Patrick, Brigid’s Cross, Irish Music, dancing, the Irish Police force, myths and legends, sport, literature and President Michael D.

Kerry School of Music will throw open its doors to the public who are welcome to attend open lessons, individual and ensemble classes and musical performances from 5pm – 10pm.

KETB Cultural Night takes place at 5-8 Denny Street, where there will be an evening of cultural activities based on diverse activities of KETB portfolio. Time: 6pm – 8pm.

Kerry County Museum will have a range of free attractions to visit while Siamsa Tíre is hosting ‘Imagining the Future – Climate and Coastal Communities.

St John’s Ashe Street will feature a screening of ‘The Camino Voyage’ at 8pm while St John’s Church on Castle Street will have A free talk about the artworks by significant figures of Irish Art in St John’s Church on Castle Street – Sean Keating, Gabriel Hayes and Tom Denny from 5pm to 5.45pm.

Over in Collis Sandes House, there will be Action Painting Workshops inspired by Jackson Pollock. Discover first-hand the magic behind Pollock’s ‘drip technique’ of splashing paint onto surfaces. In this action painting workshop you’ll use the force of your whole body to paint and maybe learn a little art history along the way. There are 30 minutes workshops at 5pm, 5.30pm, 6pm, 6.30pm and 7pm.

Talented Artists To Showcase Work On Culture Night

THE Kerry Visual Artists’ Showcase opens at 6pm on Culture Night on Friday, September 20, at Government Buildings, New Road, Killarney.

A key date in the arts calendar in the county, the selected artists are all from or based in Kerry and are building careers for themselves as artists working in Ireland today.

“It’s a wonderful platform for our artists and the standard this year is again very high. Kerry County Council is delighted to be able to directly support the showcase,” says Kate Kennelly, the County Arts Officer.

“Audiences will see some of the best who are creating art in the county today. It’s a wonderful introduction for all ages to art and a great evening out as it is Culture Night in Kerry the same day that we open the show.”

There have been seven artists selected for the Showcase this year. Des Fitzgerald from Tralee is a sculptor and photographer whose work covers a variety of issues such as communication, loss and friendship.

Kaye Maahs works in oils and is a painter whose work is rooted in the personal and the local.

James Hayes specialises in oil painting and illustration and his draws on personal connections between the individual and the wider world.

Julie Lovett’s influences derive from her rural upbringing, experiences and sense of place.

Lisa Fingleton is an artist whose work is rooted in the autobiographical and deals with socio political and environmental concerns.

Using paper, Nicole Tilley’s work highlights overlooked historical domestic narratives and mental health experiences.

Norman McCloskey work is shaped by the landscape of the Beara peninsula which he has explored with his camera for 29 years.

This is the fifth annual Kerry Visual Artists’ Showcase.  The exhibition will be opened by Cathaoirleach Niall Kelleher. The exhibition runs from the 20th  September until the 31st October this year.

Opening hours at the Department are 9am – 5pm. Kerry Visual Artists’ Showcase is supported by Kerry County Council, The Arts Council and The Department of Culture, Heritage & the Gaeltacht.

Tralee To Come Alive For Culture Night

CELEBRATED dancer, David Geaney is Kerry’s 2019 local Culture Night Ambassador and was on hand during the past week to launch the event which has a host of things to see and do in Tralee.

David will be promoting the night in Kerry on Friday, September 20th as Culture Night kicks off right across Ireland between the hours of 5.00pm and 11.00pm.

David, who has recently returned from the Broadway debut of his dance show ‘Velocity’, is a strong advocate of culture and art in Kerry and Ireland and as a proud Kerry native, David commented: “After being previously involved in Culture Night as an artist, I’m delighted to support and represent this year’s event as Culture Night Ambassador.
