Declan won five All-Ireland senior medals with Kerry and is one of the greatest Gaelic footballers of the modern era. He is one of only eight players to have lifted the Sam Maguire Cup twice as captain, doing so in 2006 and again in 2007.

O’Sullivan scored 8-83 in 70 Championship appearances for Kerry and collected three consecutive All-Star awards between 2007 and 2009. He has also won eight Munster senior titles and three National Leagues.

THERE will be a feast of Kerry GAA action on TG4 this Sunday.

Capping off an afternoon that will see live coverage of Kerry Allianz Hurling and Football games, the story of Declan O’Sullivan’s career will be told as part of the Laochra Gael series at 6:25pm.

The three-time-All-Star called time on his inter-county career at the end of 2014 and retired from the game completely last December after undergoing surgery.

Sadly, at the age of 32, the surgery could do nothing to extend his career.

The long running GAA documentary series looks at the careers of legends of both football and hurling.

Previously it has featured great Kerrymen such as Pat Spillane, ‘Ogie’ Moran, Jack O’Shea, ‘Bomber Liston and many more.

O’Sullivan is one of a the more recent breed of Kerry footballers to be featured.

Coverage will begin on Tg4 at 12pm. Kerry’s Allianz National Hurling league Division 1b game will throw in at 12:30 which will be followed by Kerry’s Allianz National Football Division 1 clash against Donegal.

Eleven years in green and gold and five All-Ireland senior medals later, the Dromid man has a story worth telling.

Each of the 10 new programmes in the new season of Laochra Gael contains an extended interview with the subject, archive footage of his finest hour on the pitch and an assessment from friends, rivals and team-mates.

Last July, TG4’s ‘Laochra Gael’ Twitter account dropped a hint when they posted a photo of Declan in front of the camera, captioned “The ultimate Kerry footballer on set…”

KERRY legend Declan O’Sullivan has announced he will no longer be playing football.

After undergoing knee surgery this morning the three-time All-Star made the announcement on Twitter, stating “After my op this morning sadly my football journey is over”.

The five time All-Ireland winner hung up his boots with Kerry at the end of last year citing persistent knee trouble.

The 31-year-old ended his career on a high picking up a senior championship county title with South Kerry last month and his fifth in total.

This year, the Dromid Pearses clubman tasted coaching experience helping the Kerry minors achieve a back-to-back All-Ireland title alongside his former boss and neighbour, Jack O’Connor.

DECLAN O’Sullivan will be taking his first steps in inter-county coaching when he teams up with his old mentor and clubmate, Jack O’Connor, with the Kerry minor team.

This week, the Kerry minors are preparing to defend their Munster crown when they face Tipperary in the curtain raiser in Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday.

The five time All-Ireland winner retired from the game at the end of last year at the age of 31, citing injuries which had taken their toll over an 11 year career.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, member of the management team Eamon Whelan said; “Declan has come in on a number of occasions and done drills and some work with the forward line”.

“He has been hugely energetic; he has shown a massive passion for the game. “I think that he has been outstanding with the lads and I think that the young fellows have responded to him” said Whelan.

“So as well has helping out, in the semi-final at the Austin Stack Park against Cork (he was) the eye in the stand,” he said.

“Declan has added a new dimension and while we as a management team are very happy that we work very well together, we feel that Declan’s input has enhanced the preparations,” he said.

This leap into coaching for O’Sullivan comes as no surprise. The three time All-Star has been active on the line over the last year or so both with his club Dromid Pearses and South Kerry.
