“All the companies and entrepreneurs here today at the ILDN South Enterprise Awardsare winners in reality. With great determination, business acumen and market and product knowledge, these companies have successfully transitioned from startups to successful businesses. The benefit of the support on the ground of local development partnership companies and the Dept. of Social Protection Back to Work schemes they received, is exemplified by the achievement of the Regional Awards today, and congratulations to Loughbeg Farm, Integreat and K&T Bakery for their success,” said Eamonn O’Reilly, Chair of ILDN South Region and CEO of North, East, West Kerry Development (NEWKD).
Hosted at the Ambassador Hotel on Military Hill, Cork, the entrepreneurs and their companies were judged by Veronica Murphy Discovery Partnership, Paul Healy of the CIT Rubicon Centre and Seamus Hayes of Fitzwilliam Training & Consulting.
The three regional winners now go forward to represent the Southern region at the National ILDN Awards which takes place in Dublin on 15 September 2016.
KERRY enterprises that have set up their businesses with assistance from the local development companies and Dept. of Social Protection through the Back to Work Area Enterprise Allowance Scheme (BTWEA) are being offered the opportunity to get national recognition for their efforts through a newly launched Enterprise Awards programme.
South Kerry Development Partnership and North East & West Kerry Development have this week launched a bid to find four candidate enterprises to represent the county at the Southern Regional Enterprise Awards event with the potential to progress right through and claim the overall national Enterprise award.
Speaking at the launch of the Kerry event this week, SKDP CEO Noel Spillane said the awards, which are being run in conjunction with the Irish Local Development Network, provide an excellent opportunity for Kerry to showcase the many successful new enterprises that have been set up in the county with support of the local development companies & the Dept. of Social Protection through the BTWEA over the last few years.
“We regularly hear about business closures but this awards programme gives us a chance to celebrate business success and recognise the hard work and vision of small enterprise owners in Kerry,” Noel said.
Both SKDP and NEWKD operate the Back to Work/Short Term Enterprise Allowance scheme in conjunction with the Department of Social Protection that provides support, advice and some small grant assistance to unemployed people wishing to set up their own business.
TraleeToday.ie is just one of many businesses which has benefitted from the assistance of NEWKD in the past few years.
The scheme has proven to be a tremendous success with a high percentage of the businesses set up through the programme still operating after five years.
NEWKD CEO Eamon O’Reilly said that this new awards initiative is open to businesses set up through this scheme since 2011 and he encouraged all eligible businesses to enter the competition. “These businesses are the backbone of rural Ireland in particular and we are delighted to be involved with this initiative to promote them at a regional and national level” Eamon said.
The closing date for applications is Friday, 29th April and the application form is available to download from both the SKDP www.southkerry.ie and NEWKD www.newkd.ie websites or by contacting your local SKDP or NEWKD office directly. The national awards ceremony will take place in Dublin in September.
FORTY new jobs, to be situated at a Killarney company, have been announced this morning worth an extra €2.4m to local economy.
In all, 100 new jobs are to be created by Killarney based manufacturing and engineering group, Tricel, with 40 of these to be situated in the company’s headquarters in Killarney.
The new jobs, including graduate positions, will bolster the existing workforce of 250 based in Ireland, UK and France over the next 18 months and will strengthen operations in management, engineering, R&D, product development, marketing and manufacturing.
Exports at the company have increased to over 70% of turnover in just eight years and growth of over 65% in last five years. Tricel currently employs 100 people in Killarney.
This project is supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through Enterprise Ireland.
Tricel is a European leader in the development and manufacture of advanced and specialised composite products from water storage tanks and wastewater treatment systems to construction and building products as well as specialist moulding and filler products for the manufacturing and automotive industries.
The new jobs also mean that the company will invest in more resources to facilitate its expansion across the company and it is hoped that many of the new graduate positions could be filled from local third level colleges in the Munster region.
Originally known as Killarney Plastics which was founded in Killarney in 1973, Tricel also established further operations in UK in 1993 and in France in 2011 from where it won ‘Best Irish Company in France’ award in 2012.
From 2010 to 2013 the company saw growth of 57% with an extra 75 jobs created then and has forecasted turnover to double in the next four years. This will be achieved by the continuing expansion into new markets and through the introduction of new and innovative products into recently newfound markets throughout Europe, Middle East, Australia and the American continents
Tricel Managing Director Mike Stack said: “Our main success and expansion was actually fuelled by the recession in Ireland which had a detrimental effect on our Irish market which forced us to increase focus on our existing UK market and also on further export markets. We bucked the trend and backed ourselves by making a multimillion euro investment in R&D and plant & machinery within this period.
“Amongst our biggest business achievements during this time was the fact in 2007 we exported 5% of our turnover and were highly dependent on the Irish construction market. By 2013 our exports had increased to 70% of our turnover. This investment has led to continuous process and design improvements which have ensured our current and future success. Being a privately family owned business we pride ourselves in supporting the local economy and where possible, local manufacturers and service providers are the preferred supplier choice. We’re very grateful for the assistance we’ve received from the Government through Enterprise Ireland which has really helped us grow our business and exports to help create these jobs”.
The Stack family were keen to point out that a game changer and turning point for the company was when they made the decision to enter the environmental market with a domestic waste water treatment system. As the success of this product became apparent in Ireland they made the decision to manufacture it in modular form which would allow it to be transported overseas at a competitive cost. This eventually led to the decision to assemble the product in their Gloucester factory to service the UK market and to open a purpose built assembly factory in France to service the French market.
