“We thank them for supporting us and we’ve already raised over €2,000 on the gofundme page. It’s been great to see people come out for to support the event. With the funds we’re hoping to put down an astro-pitch/multi-play surface in an area at the school,” said Mike.

After a warm-up, the participants set off on 2k and 5k routes around the Park just after 11am and there was a lovely atmosphere generated by the close-knit school community. Scroll down for photos…

THE folks at St John’s Parochial School on Ashe Street, Tralee are looking forward to welcoming the wide community to an event this Sunday morning as a fundraiser for their school.

The children, their parents and staff are planning the school’s second annual fun run in Tralee Town Park to help fund school yard and play space upgrades.

The Principal of St John’s Parochial School, Mike O’Toole, said: “Our numbers have doubled in recent years – from 38 to 75 students and from two to four teachers – since 2022. The play spaces have become more crowded and we would love to make these areas as productive and play friendly as possible.

“Astro Pitches and Playgrounds cost up to €20,000 and €45,000 respectively and proceeds from this year’s fun run will go towards our Yard Rejuvenation Fund. Unfortunately, and despite being a DEIS school, there is no funding from the Department or grant available to bring our children’s dreams to fruition.”

Anyone who wants a fun day out, while keeping fit at the same time can register from 10.15am at the park entrance opposite the KDYS on Denny Street while the run itself will start at 11am.

Anyone who is not in a position to take part in the fun run can support the school’s fundraising efforts by making a donation online at https://www.gofundme.com/st-johns-parochial-school.

For more information, please contact info@jschooltralee.com or phone 066 7128142 during school hours.

THE kids are made of sterner stuff here in Tralee and it showed as they braved the rain this afternoon for the  fun run in the Town Park.

Held as part of the Tír Na nÓg Children’s Festival and supported by Tralee Chamber Alliance, the bad weather meant that the planned Zumba warm up from Linda Flanagan had to wait until nearly 1pm as the rain abated.

She kept the youngsters entertained along with Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Woody and Buzz and Sofia The First, but, with drops starting to fall again, it was decided to get the fun run underway and about 80 children and adults set off on the circuit.

The kids had to endure another heavy shower before finishing with a well-deserved certificate, medal and, of course, an Easter egg, waiting for them. Well done to the organisers and those who took part despite the weather. Scroll down for a short video of the start and photos below…

Local Business Sponsors Trophies For CBS Fun Run This Sunday

CBS Fun run sponsors 2
Kieran Ahern of Foley’s Spar Express on the Castlemaine Road delivers the trophies for the CBS Fun Run to the school. Also included are students and teachers Helen Kelliher and Karen Tobin.

WITH only days to go until the inaugural CBS The Green 5k and 3k fun run, organisers are still encouraging runners to register for the event.

Taking place on this Sunday, September 27 at 1pm sharp, the fundraising event marks the beginning of a new school year and the continuation of the school’s fundraising initiatives for their new astro turf facility.

The run received a welcome boost  as local man Norman Foley of Foley’s Spar Express on the Castlemaine Road is sponsoring the medals and trophies to the school.

Norman said that he was “happy to help out, in any way he could and that the astro turf facility will be of huge benefit to the school community.”

Preparations are well afoot for what promises to be a great day out for all the family.  Local business people have provided refreshments, bouncy castles and face painting.

All participants will receive a medal and goodie bag upon crossing the finishing line.

The running bug has well and truly been established in the Green school as a result of the very successful classroom to 5k programme.

CBS teachers Helen Kelliher and Karen Tobin, organisers of this event, are both keen runners and members of Born To Run marathon Club.

The race will commence and finish in the school grounds, taking in the town park and outlining areas, making the routes fast, flat and safe. The less challenging 3k is aimed at novice runners and local primary school children, while the 5k will suit all ages and abilities.

The cost of this event is €5 for children/students and €10 for adults. This will be a timed race. There will be plenty of prizes on the day and a medal for all participants.

Registration forms are available from the school and all information can be found on our Facebook page (CBS, The Green Inaugural 5k and 3k Fun Run) or by contacting the school on (066) 7145824.
