GLÓR na nGael has  announced the appointment of Michelle Nic Gabhann as the Language Planning Officer (LPO) to implement the Tralee Irish Language Plan.

Michelle was raised in Tralee and attended both Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn and Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí.

“I am really looking forward to taking on the role of LPO for Tralee,” she said. “With deep roots in the area, it is an honour to be involved in promoting the language in my hometown. Tralee has a vibrant community, and it will be fantastic to work together with the people of Tralee to enhance the Irish language here.” Michelle commenced this new role earlier this month.

Announcing the appointment, Lorcán Mac Gabhann, Chief Executive of Glór na nGael, stated that this appointment will have a positive impact on the future of the Irish language in the town itself and in the surrounding areas.

“The main objective is that this plan will help us all to foster the language in Tralee,” said Mac Gabhann. “The success of the plan will, of course, depend on the partnership of all active groups in the community, including community groups and state agencies.”

Con Moynihan, acting Irish Officer with the Kerry Education and Training Board, expressed his enthusiasm at the appointment. “The passion that Michelle shows for the Irish language and the town of Tralee is very clear,” said Con.

“Her extensive experience and positive demeanor will serve her well in this new role, and she is certain to make significant contributions to the growth and development of the Irish language in Tralee and the surrounding areas. I wish her every success.”

Planning began in 2020 with the creation of the Tralee Language Plan by the Kerry Education and Training Board. Tralee was recognised as a Gaeltacht Service Town in September 2022.

A Gaeltacht Service Town is a town with a population of at least 1,000 people located in or near a Gaeltacht language planning area and plays a significant role in providing social, economic, and recreational services to people in that area.

Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha is a collaborative initiative between Glór na nGael and the GAA.  The partnership is dedicated to enhancing the presence and usage of the Irish language across GAA clubs nationwide.

The medal serves as a testament to Na Gaeil’s ongoing efforts in integrating the Irish language into their activities and fostering its growth among their members and the community.

The club held a celebration of their efforts on Thursday night with traditional Irish music, singing and conversation as gaeilge to welcome Clíodhna who was impressed with Na Gaeil’s efforts.

“A lot of work has gone in from the club to achieve the bronze medal this year. I’m delighted to be here in the club tonight to see how alive and vibrant the Irish language is among the members and in Tralee itself,” said Clíodhna.

“It’s great for Na Gaeil to achieve the bronze — especially as they’re not in a Gaeltacht area — and it’s testament to the work put in by Cáit Uí Chonchúir and Colm Ó Suilleabháin to promote the scheme and Irish in the club,” added Clíodhna.

Any club wishing to apply for the initiative can contact cliodhna@glornangael.
