THE annual Tralee 10 Miler and 5k Road Race was a sellout success on Saturday morning with over 300 runners taking to the roads around the town.

It was an especially poignant day for organiser Michelle Greaney, as it coincided with the six month anniversary of the passing of her dad Michael, with this year’s race dedicated to his memory.

Proceeds from yesterday’s event — where runners started and finished on the road behind The Rose Hotel — will be donated to the Kerry Hospice as Michael was cared for by the incredible staff in the palliative care unit before his passing.

“I’m absolutely thrilled with the day, I couldn’t have asked for better conditions for running,” said Michelle.

“It’s the fourth time we’ve organised it and it’s turned out to be the biggest. We’ve had runners from Cork, Dublin, Limerick, Waterford, Tipperary, Belfast and of course Kerry. It’s a special event this year remembering dad, so it’s a poignant day in that regard,” she added.

KERRY Hospice received a cheque on Tuesday, the proceeds of a well-supported event held over the Easter weekend.

Local fitness/strength and conditioning coach, Michelle Greaney organised the Jemma O’Shea Memorial 5km & 10km Run/Walk in aid of the Palliative Care Unit at UHK and

Jemma O’Shea, who fought a long brave battle with cancer and sadly passed away on October 27 last year, was a much-loved member of the Born To Run Club and the wider running community in the county.

The event was held virtually over the Easter weekend with a great response from the public seeing €5,300 raised.

“Michelle very kindly ran this event for us and we’re delighted with the response,” said Maura Sullivan of Kerry Hospice. “The weather was fine over the weekend so people could get out in their own time and socially distanced to complete it.”

“Jemma was an amazing person loved by so many,” said Michelle Greaney. “She was always the first to support charity events like this for the Hospice and I’ll continue to raise funds in further events. Jemma also loved challenges, so my next big run will be the Limerick Marathon on May 2 which I’ll take part in in her memory.”

“Jemma was such a special, positive, person with a huge zest for life,” said Michelle. “She was the biggest supporter of my charity runs, of every event, the first to sign up, the first to have encouraging words for everyone that took part in the various things she got involved in.”

“The Palliative Care Unit in UHK provided exceptional care for Jemma and are always such a deserving charity to fundraise for,” said Michelle.

“So while there won’t be events anytime soon due to covid-19 still having a huge impact, we can run virtually to ensure the safety of everyone while observing social distancing guidelines where ever you are doing it from Good Friday until Easter Sunday.”

There is an option to purchase a medal (supplied locally) and make a further donation to the Hospice if desired.

A cash prize of €50 will go to the fastest male and female runner in both events kindly sponsored by Lee Strand

There is a team option also which will consist of 4 participants, at least one to be female, 3 fastest accumulated times count.

Michelle’s Fundraiser To Get You Active Within Your 5k During Level 5 Restrictions

.
Michelle Greaney.

A TRALEE run performance coach is encouraging people to get out and exercise over the next five weeks while also donating to a great cause, the Kerry Hospice Foundation.

Michelle Greaney of MG Coaching says running and exercises are hugely important for health and mental resolve and staying active, especially now during Level 5 Restrictions.

“We have a lot of time on our hands again, so why not use the time to exercise, run or walk 5k, feel good about donating to this amazing charity,” said Michelle who has organised the ‘Run 5km/Donate €5/Nominate 5’ fundraiser.

Continued below…

.

The idea is to nominate five others to take part in the challenge and help spread the word.
You can upload your run or a selfie on social media, while staying within your 5k radius and adhering to all of the current guidelines.

“It was another blow to our group sessions again when the level 5 was introduced, but I am happy to comply with expert advice. We will all get through this together, we can do this fundraiser while adhering to guidelines and staying healthy and active,” said Michelle.

“This challenge should give others inspiration that even if they are on their own, they can keep contact through social media. I would love to see all athletics clubs, social running clubs and other sports clubs in Kerry come together to support the challenge and send in their selfies.

My aim since all of this started in March was to keep people active, get them out there, realise the numerous benefits of running or walking for our physical and mental health while raising vital funds for charities.”

“Everyone clearly misses the camaraderie etc of races but as soon as I can organise something again while strictly adhering to the guidelines, I will.

My own group are continuing to train apart but being held accountable to the rest of the group and discussing their efforts after each prescribed run session so thats motivation to keep going.

So while we are further restricted but allowed to keep running and meeting up with one other household member, I am advising taking part in this challenge, uploading a photo of your efforts and please donate,” said Michelle.
