REPORT: St Brendan’s Beat Crotta To Advance In Championship

.

Mike O’Halloran watched St Brendan’s just get over the line against Crotta in the Garvey’s Supervalu Kerry SHC Round 2 replay yesterday in Austin Stack Park…

Crotta O’Neills haven’t exited the championship with this one point loss today but it must surely put a little doubt in their minds as to how they can hold on to a lead.

Again yesterday they were four ahead at one stage in the first half, only to go in at halftime down by one.

Admittedly they were denied a goal and perhaps another decision or two during the half.

Continued below…

.

Jordan Conway and Donal Hunt had Crotta ahead by two before John Egan pointed and Cian Hussey struck for goal. But Shane Nolan cancelled both of those scores with a goal and a point.

The next three points came from David Griffin, John Egan and  Tim Hannafin who converted after some consternation in the Crotta square.

Five points followed for Crotta the final one came from Donal Hunt to put Crotta ahead by four 1-08 to 1-04. In-between those scores, Crotta had the ball in the net only for the ref to bring the play back for a free.

Tom Moloney and David Griffin had points before Cian Hussey converted a penalty to leave the halftime score Crotta 1-08 St Brendans 2-06.

Shane Nolan converted two frees after halftime and when Tim Hannafin was presented with a gilt edged goal chance his effort went out for a sixty five.

Egan converted the sixty five and Cian Hussey followed with a point before Tim Hannafin spurned another goal chance to put over another point.

Shane Nolan put over two more points, but Egan replied with a free. With 52 minutes gone Shane Nolan drew Crotta level 2-10 to 1-13.

David Griffin put St Brendans back in front by one a lead they held to the end despite Crotta being presented with six scoring chances — they had four wides in a row and Darren Delaney made two saves.

The final two scoring chances fell to Shane Nolan – he was short with a free that resulted in a sixty five at the corner flag, Shane was wide with the 65 and so it ended St Brendans 2-11 Crotta 1-13.

Crotta now face Kilmoyley at the weekend and they will have to dust themselves off from this defeat.

A point worth noting is that Crotta had some of their most influential players playing with the Kerry U20s on Saturday, hardly great preparation for today’s game.

Crotta will need to take all the scoring chances presented to them and they will have to add to their scoring personnel.

They say matches are better than training sessions and if that’s true then St Brendans and Crotta must be well prepared for the remainder of the competition.

St Brendans will be hoping that their ‘yanks’ will return with some hurling done while they were away. It’s knock out time next weekend so let the games begin.

A MEMORABLE night of dancing and fun was had at the second annual St Brendan’s Hurling Club’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel on Saturday.

Over 400 people attended the event with the crowds arriving from early evening, waiting to get a good seat to view the entertainment.

The 11 couples had been practising hard under tutors from the Cassie Leen School of Dance and it showed in their opening performance which was introduced by MC for the evening, Stephen Wallace.

The couples then had a chance to dazzle the judges — Mike O’Halloran, Toireasa Ferris, Danny Leane and Vicky O’Sullivan — with their individual dances.

IT’S all systems go for the second annual St Brendan’s Hurling Club’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.

Many of the 22 contestants gathered at Curby’s Bar in Ardfert village for the launch of the event, which takes place in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel on Saturday, December 2. It’s clear they can’t wait to take to the dancefoor, such was the enthusiasm in evidence at Curby’s.

The judges will be revealed on the night but the MC has already been confirmed and it’s none other than Offaly senior football manager and local man, Stephen Wallace.

LIXNAW won the Acorn Life County Under 21 Hurling Championship Final for the first time since 2004 on Saturday evening in front of a good crowd in Abbeydorney.

The final score was Lixnaw 3-15  to St. Brendan’s 1-12 and the green and gold men were worthy winners.

An early goal from Shane Conway in the fifth minute set Lixnaw on their way and they led 1-4 to 0-3 after the first quarter.

However St Brendan’s came back at them and Cian Hussey was in fine form to ensure the sides went in level, 0-7 apiece at the break.

Lixnaw kicked on in the second-half though and two goals in the 35th (Colin Sheehy) and 37th minutes (an own goal from Kevin Hannifin) put them into a five point lead.

Eric Leen scored a goal back for St Brendan’s, but Lixnaw had the greater desire and pulled away towards the end.

Hurling: Who’ll Emerge From Sunday’s Feast Of Championship Hurling?

Benners Insert Ad
.

rsz_mike_ohalloranOur hurling writer, Mike O’Halloran, looks at the feast of Garvey’s Supervalu Kerry Senior Hurling Championship hurling action on the way this Sunday…

Crotta O’Neill’s v Kilmoyley, Causeway 1.30pm

Kilmoyley are riding high at the top of the County Hurling League and are seeking to get over the hurdle posed by Crotta, in an attempt to get to another final where they would hope to learn from last year’s defeat to Lixnaw.

Kilmoyley surprised everybody last year with the challenge they mounted in the championship, when most people thought they were depleted due to emigration, retirements and the loss of Shane Brick.

But they defied the odds in reaching the final with a complete team performance. Kilmoyley led by dual star Daniel Collins and fellow county men Adrian Royle and Dougie Fitzell will attempt to overcome a Crotta O’Neills team under the baton of the maestro Shane Nolan.

Shane Nolan may be the conductor, but surely Sean Weir will be the lead violinist and orchestra leader. Weir can pull the strings to put it up to Kilmoyley but without more help up front and resolute defending at the back, Crotta will struggle to overcome Kilmoyley.

Another factor is the pitch. Will the confines of Causeway suit Shane Nolan? Only seventy minutes of caman wielding will decide.

A draw here.

Abbeydorney v St Brendan’s, Causeway 3pm

In the second part of the double bill, Abbeydorney will take on St Brendan’s.

I reported on St Brendan’s V Ballyduff game a couple of weeks ago for TraleeToday.ie on a night where St Brendan’s won the 2014 County League at their ease with John Egan scoring 1-15 and playing without College star Kevin Hannafin.

St Brendans Darren Delaney 1
St Brendan’s Darren Delaney could be vital on Sunday. Photo by Mike O’Halloran

While it is very hard to look beyond St Brendan’s in this one -with the array of stars they can draw on from the firmament of county stars including Egan, Darren Dineen, Rory Horgan never mind the dual star David Griffin brilliant goalie Darren Delaney and young up coming star Eric Leen – there is always a big game in Abbeydorney and they will give it every ounce of energy they have to gain victory.

Abbeydorney are awaiting the availability of one or two of their stars who are away but in Cork import Darragh O’Brien, the experienced Aiden Healy and Kieran Dineen they have big men to call on.

Up front, Abbeydorney have one of the top young forwards in the county in Stevie O’Sullivan, the county underage star has an eye for goal and Abbeydorney will need goals to overcome St Brendan’s.

St Brendan’s feel they “left a championship after them” last year and Pat O’Driscoll and his management team will leave no stone unturned to get to a final.

Ballyduff v Causeway, Kilmoyley 6pm

Fans were texting me during the week saying that it is unfair to have to go Kilmoyley for this game and pay another entry fee, but all games are played at neutral venues so there seems to be no alternative to this situation.

Causeway seem to have all the aces in this game, given that they have a whole plethora of county stars including the Murphys – Stephen and Brian, Colum Harty, Keith Carmody and dual star Brandon Barrett, Paul McGrath will provide the accuracy from placed balls.

So they seem to have a very strong hand. They face a Ballyduff team that is not going too well and as late as last week, were still awaiting the return to training of a few of their stars.

The Boyles and Gradys will lead the charge, in young Eoin Ross they have quite a prospect, Jack Goulding is on the Kerry minor football panel so it will be interesting to see if he is allowed to play.

The loss of PJ Gorman who is recovering from a cruciate injury, brings Joe Bunyan in as net minder and he is quite an asset to Ballyduff both as a ball stopper, but more so as a play starter with his strategic puck outs and pin point clearances to his team mates.

Ballyduff scored 4-15 against Lixnaw recently, so the potential to defeat Causeway is there.

Another factor in the mix might be the fact that Causeway have replaced a very experienced management team with a complete new set up and sometimes it takes a year or two for the new management team to get on message with the team and bed in.

The tighter pitch in Kilmoyley should suit Ballyduff better. The Round Tower Boys to just shade it.
