TRALEE boxer won a National Senior Cadets Championship on Friday night at the National Stadium.

Patrick McCarthy of Tralee Boxing Club beat Eoghan Quinn from St Johns B.C. Derry. Quinn, a three time Irish Champion and bronze medalist in European Championships, was highly fancied to take McCarthy the reigning Irish Champion, but McCarthy had other ideas.

Patrick boxed brilliant from the first bell annoying Quinn with his speed and footwork, Patrick never deviated from his plan devised by his coaches and went on to win 5-0.

Patrick is now called up to train with the Irish High Performance Team and hopefully he will make the team who will be heading to Albena Bulgaria on the 17th – 26th Sept this year.

This has been a long hard year for both Patrick and Johnathon who are training since Sept 2016, to maintain their weight for such a long time is very difficult as these boys are growing everyday.

On a sad note, Johnathon McCarthy was beaten in the final by Joe Harkin (Letterkenny).

Johnathon boxed very well but was caught by a right-hand on the bell of the second round and got a standing count, in a round, he won hands down.

It was very difficult to come  back from this, but Johnathon is made from good stuff and he will be back again to have his day in the sun.

Tralee Boxing Club are delighted with both boys performances and would like to thank Tommy, Nolie, Donie, Hugh, Bryan, for travelling to Dublin last night, Patrick and Johnathon would like to thank coaches, sparring partners, media and everybody who helped them in anyway  for them to achieve their dream.
