Senior Co. Championship: Last Saturday night our senior team travelled to Gallarus to play West Kerry in Round 3 of the Senior County Championship.

Despite playing with the aid of the strong breeze our lads got off to the worst possible start as West Kerry managed a goal straight from the throw in. This was quickly followed by a West Kerry point. Fortunately the reply from Na Gaeil was swift.

A Jack Sheehan point from play was followed by 2 Diarmuid O’Connor frees to leave just a point between the sides after just 7 minutes.

Next, a long ball from Jack Barry found Diarmuid O’Connor on the halfway line and he ran 40m before firing the ball over the bar to level the game. Scores came thick and fast after that with points from Jack Sheehan, Diarmuid O’Connor and Andrew Barry to just a single point for West Kerry to leave us ahead 0-7 to 1-2.

A West Kerry effort for a goal went just wide and from the resultant attack Jack Sheehan was on hand to rifle the ball to the net to stretch our lead to 5 points with just 18 minutes gone in the first half.

West Kerry added a point from a free before Jack Sheehan again hit the net following great work by Dan Goggin and James O’Connor. Our lead now was out to 7 points but to their credit West Kerry didn’t lie down.

Their next attack was well saved by Devon Burns but the rebound was volleyed to the net by the in-rushing Thomas O’Donnell. Two minutes later the same player added a second goal to leave just a single point between the teams approaching half-time.

The impressive Jack Sheehan slotted over a valuable point and then on the stroke of half-time Diarmuid O’Connor converted yet another free to leave the half-time score West Kerry 3-3, Na Gaeil 2-9.

The second half started with another point from a free by Diarmuid O’Connor before Darragh Reen got one from play. Then in the 5th minute came a big moment.

West Kerry were awarded a penalty which was brilliantly saved by Devon Burns. It rebounded out to a West Kerry player who looked certain to score but Devon blocked it a second time and we cleared our lines. Soon afterwards Devon converted a 45’ to increase our lead to 6 points.

West Kerry added 3 points in quick succession before Diarmuid O’Connor converted another free to halt their momentum. Crucially the next score was a goal by Darragh Reen after 17 minutes to put us in the driving seat again.

Further points from play by the excellent Diarmuid O’Connor and Dara Devine were cancelled out by 3 points by West Kerry as the game edged to full time. However the final score fell to the industrious Dan Goggin who was at the end of a flowing move and he finished to the net to leave the final score West Kerry 3-9, Na Gaeil 4-15.

It was an historic occasion for our lads, the club’s first ever victory in the Senior County Championship.

Well done to all the players and the management team on this great achievement.
