PEIL FAOI 13: The Austin Stack Club Bs challenged the Listowel Emmet Club B boys in the U13 County League (Division 13) Final on Sunday last. It was truly an epic County League Final thatwas described by many in attendance as the ‘best game of underage football’ that they had everwatched. Unfortunately, our gallant heroes came out on the wrong side of a high scoring encounter. Regardless of the result, these boys can be very proud of their performance and, knowing their spirit and character, we can truthfully state and reassure everybody that they will bounce back. This is merely the end of the beginning and there is still plenty of football to come over the summer. Sea, beidh lá eile ag an bPaorach!
Match report, courtesy of Ed O’Regan:
An scór deireanach….Listowel Emmets B: 5-13; Austin Stack Club B: 5-10. The lads came up just short against a very strong Listowel side in a pulsating encounter played in sunny St Senan’s Club grounds in front of a large attendance. The young Rockites started off well and picked off a few earlyscores but Listowel grew into the game and took control with a couple of goals. This, however, didn’t deter The Rock lads who scored a goal of their own and, due to some fine Listowel defending, were unlucky not to get another. At the other end, the Stack Club defence had to work hard to repel a number of Listowel attacks. They worked hard to get the deficit back to 0-3 but Listowel picked off another point from a free that left The Rockies trailing by 0-4 going into the half-time break. A mini-mountain that The Rock had to climb got a little higher when Listowel came out for the second half firing on all cylinders and immediately pointed to stretch the lead out to 0-5. This Black‘n’Amber team has shown throughout the season that they have great fighting spirit and Sunday night last was no different. Following the Listowel point they turned in a blistering 10-minute display, scoring 2-1 to turn the game on its head and they then lead by 0-2. The game was now really in the melting pot and the next goal would be critical and, in fairness, the Listowel side wasn’t found wanting in fighting spirit, either! Unfortunately, they picked off the next two goals and a couple of points to extend their lead to 0-6 with less than 10 minutes to go. This Tralee team wasnever going to lie down and an excellently-worked close-range free kick found the net and reduced the margin to 0-3 with 5 minutes remaining. Excitement mounted! With both sides now on 5 goals, Stacks had the difficult task of having to find 0-3 to equalise. They found one to reduce the margin to 0-2 with a couple of minutes remaining and pushed hard to get another but Listowel got the final score to leave 0-3 between the sides. Things rested so and the corn went towards the River Feale instead of the Lee! Well done, everybody! Thanks to the Listowelcontingent and thanks to the referee for allowing an excellent free-flowing game of football that was very exciting for the large crowd in attendance. This was a tough one to take for this young Rock side; this was the first experience of a competitive final for the majority of these boys! Defeat is always tough to take but these lads and their coaches can be very proud of the players’ effort and performance; they have shown that they still have a great summer ahead with a number of competitions up for grabs; their day will come!

PLAQUE: The plaque in memory of Dr Thomas Croke (1824 – 1902), Archbishop of Cashel and first Patron of the GAA, on the wall of Hogan’s Paint Shop in The Square, was unveiled 12 years ago by Archbishop Dermot Clifford. That property was once owned by the Thompson and Croke families. Young Thomas William Croke spent many summer vacations there. It is said that he spoke with a Tralee/Kerry accent throughout his life! His parents, William and Isabella, first lived in Tralee where their two eldest children were born. They later moved to Ballyclough in North Cork to manage the Deane-Freeman Estate. Their third child, Thomas William, was born in Castlecor (between Kanturk and Buttevant) and baptised in Kilbrin Church. In his late teens Thomas William Croke began his studying for the priesthood. He attended the Irish Colleges in Paris and in Rome and he did well in his studies. He sold his Roman academic awards of silver and gold for Irish Famine Relief in 1847, the year in which he was ordained priest. He was also a gifted sportsman and he realised the importance of sport for young people. Archbishop Croke’s written response to Michael Cusack’s invitation, in 1884, to become Patron of the newly founded GAA is a document of importance and is regarded as the GAA’s ‘Magna Carta.’

MTU worked closely with the South West Regional Skills Forum in developing and prioritising its Springboard+ offerings in line with the needs of industry and business in the region.

Dr Brendan O’Donnell, Vice President for Academic Affairs at MTU, said: “The Springboard+ initiative is the cornerstone of the lifelong learning offering at MTU. These courses are unique in that they offer both an opportunity to re-skill and/or up-skill, leading to qualifications that are in demand by employers. We work very closely with industry to understand their skills needs and how sectors are future-proofing the skills of people already in employment, particularly in roles that may be impacted by digitalisation. Our Springboard + offerings are direct responses to these collaborative partnerships. Our range of applied and blended programmes offer students flexibility around how they engage with the programme, which is invaluable when balancing study with a busy work schedule”.

Anne Looney, External Services Manager at MTU added; “Springboard+ responds quickly to emerging technologies and skills in industries and continues to provide valuable opportunities for people to either develop their career or to relaunch it entirely. With flexibility being a key component of the Springboard+ initiative, most courses are one-year, part-time and many are offered either in a blended format or delivered entirely online.”

Springboard+ courses are free for people who are unemployed, those who were previously self-employed and returners to the workforce. Courses at NFQ Level 6 are also free for those in employment. For employed participants on courses NFQ level 7 – 9, 90% of the course fee is government-funded, with participants required to contribute just the balancing 10%. Springboard+ is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union.

Staff will be available over the coming weeks to advise potential students looking at a return to education. Further information on course availability, eligibility criteria and the application process is available by visiting www.springboardcourses.ie.

.

RADIO Kerry Radio Bingo has raised €251,420 for its four Kerry charity beneficiaries since it began in May of 2021.

The proceeds from year two, €130,412, have this week been shared equally among the four charity partners Kerry Cancer Support Group, Kerry Hospice, Recovery Haven Kerry Cancer Support House and Comfort for Chemo Kerry with each group receiving €32,603.

General Manager of Radio Kerry Fiona Stack said “We are lucky to live in a place with a strong sense of community. The shareholders in Radio Kerry are all local businesses and organisations and are fully committed to all funds raised by the Radio Bingo being passed on to support local charities.”

.

Breda Dyland of Kerry Cancer Support Group said; “We are delighted with the continued support from Radio Kerry and its listeners from Radio Bingo. Last year we said we were ring fencing the funding for a wheelchair accessible vehicle. I’m delighted to say that the new 33 seat state of the art fully accessible bus has been on the road for just over three weeks.

“The job of keeping it there now starts. With fuel prices rising again we will feel the pinch and are also even busier because of it so funding is vital. We are always looking at ways to expand and improve so we hope that people continue to support what has become a vital funding source for us.”

Jack Shanahan, Chairman of the Kerry Hospice Foundation said they are delighted to accept this substantial amount from Radio Kerry. “Along with supporting our regular palliative care services, the extra money will be spent helping employ two new full time advanced nurse practitioners. They will provide much needed extra clinical support for our extremely busy units.”

Numbers are broadcast 5 times per day on Radio Kerry as well as being posted on Radio Kerry Facebook and Instagram Stories daily.  Books are €5 each available from over 70 outlets countywide.  Radio Kerry does not take benefit financially from the Radio Bingo game.

For more details on Radio Kerry Radio Bingo and a list of participating shops where books can be purchased are available on www.radiokerry.ie/bingo

Kerry Greens To Run Six Candidates In Next Year’s Local Elections

.
Green Party Kerry candidates for next year’s local elections Anluan Dunne (Tralee), Anne-Marie Fuller (Listowel), Peadar Ó Fionnáin (Corca Dhuibhne), Diarmaid Griffin (Killarney) Cleo Murphy (Kenmare) and Paul Bowler (Castleisland)

The Kerry branch of the Green Party has announced its line-up of candidates for next year’s local elections, with representatives in all six electoral areas.

The candidates are Tralee – Anluan Dunne; Killarney – Diarmaid Griffn; Listowel – Anne-Marie Fuller; Kenmare – Cleo Murphy; Dingle – Peadar Ó Fionnáin and Castleisland – Paul Bowler.

Branch chairperson Paul Bowler describes the announcement of six candidates as a major achievement.

Continued below…

.

“This is the first time the Green Party will run in all electoral areas in Kerry,” he says. “It’s testament to the concern that exists about the climate threat. Our local branch has never been stronger and the six candidates have been working well together since 2020. I’m proud of the fact that we will be offering every voter in Kerry an opportunity to elect a Green Party representative to Kerry County Council in 2024.”

The Green Party candidate for Tralee will be Anluan Dunne.

“Quality of life is massively important to people and I will be campaigning for more rail and bus services, better air quality, and investment in our town and village centres to make them places where people and families want to live, come to work and set up businesses,” he says.

“We have a huge opportunity to harness the Green economy across Kerry. With the offshore energy industry on the cusp of significant expansion in our county, and remote working now a very normal part of business life, we need people with a vision for the future and the ambition to deliver for Tralee and its surrounding area.”
