The Credit Union SFL Div 1 Round 7
An Ghaeltacht 3-12 Ballymacelligott 3-10
Venue: Pairc Chaide Ghallarois    Date: 19th May 2024

An Ghaeltacht started at a fearless and furious pace on Saturday evening in Gallarois. They sustained this energy right throughout the game. It took Ballymac some time to get into the game. The second half was fascinating to watch with five goals scored and no let-up from either team until the final whistle blew.

An Ghaeltacht, made their intentions known within a minute, they breached the Ballymac back line and the ball hit the back of the net. Aidan Been scored a point for Ballymac and after six minutes Niall Collins had matched An Ghaeltacht earlier point.

For fifteen minutes, Ballymac could not add to this tally of 0-2 and An Ghaeltacht added three points before Michael Herlihy scored a much-needed point for Ballymac. An Ghaeltacht added another to bring their tally for their half to 1-06. Two points from Donal Daly and a free from Aidan Breen finished the scoring for the first half.

Half Time Score: An Ghaeltacht 1-06  Ballymacelligott 0-5

An Ghaeltacht last a player to a black card in the second minute of the second half. Ballymac’s Daire Keane worked hard and got the ball to Aidan Breen who scored a goal and he followed this up with a point.

The teams were now level with just five minutes gone. The West Kerry side added a point from Dara Ó Sé. A point from Ballymac Daire Keane had the teams level again.

An Ghaeltacht were back to 15 and for the next seven minutes saw them score three points and a goal. Ballymac scored the next three points from Darragh Broderick and two from Niall Collins. An Ghaeltacht scored a point and Vinnie Horan scored a goal. The score was 2-11 to 2-10 with five minutes left.

An Ghaeltacht scored a point and a goal and Ballymac once again hit the back of the net. The final whistle blew with an Ghaeltacht winning by two points.

Next week we welcome Glenflesk to Ballymacelligott for round 8 of The senior football league.

The Credit Union SFL Div 6B  Round
Ballymacelligott Milltown/Castlemaine
Venue: Ballymacelligott  Date: 17th May 2024.

Top of the Divison 6B table Milltown, found the mid-table Ballymac side, thorny and hard to outdistance in this very competitive Senior County League game on Friday evening in Ballymacelligott.

Milltown/Castlemaine were thankful for a great start to the game and saw them have a good lead at halftime. However Ballymac slowly but surely hauled them back and the game ended in a draw.

By the time Ballymac scored their first point, from Conor Brick, in the tenth minute of the game Milltown had 1-01 on the scoreboard.

Shane McGillicuddy back from injury scored a goal for Ballymac but Milltown replied with a point and a goal within two minutes.

Conor Brick added another point for Ballymac Another two points from Milltown before the half-time whistle left the visitors comfortably in front at half time.
Half Time score: Ballymacelligott 1-02 Milltown/Castlemaine 2-04

It was uplifting to see Darragh Broderick, back from a long-term injury, come on as a substitute in the second half. A point from Broderick opened the scoring in the second half followed by two more from Brian Cassidy and Shane McGillicuddy.

There were two points between the teams. Riain Foley scored a point.  Then James Kenny stole a ball meant for a Milltown player and passed to Michael Herlihy who added another point for Ballymac.

Milltown added a point and the next score was a goal from Riain Foley for Milltown. It looked all over for the Ballymac side with a mountain to climb, six points between the teams, and fifteen minutes left.

However, from here until the end of the game the Ballymac side played with great heart and spirit and Mid Kerry side failed to score until the end. The Ballymac backs defended like lions and the forwards threw off the shackles and aimed and scored some lovely points.

In this final period, Ballymac scored six points. James Kenny with the first of the six, then four in a row (one from a free) from Darragh Broderick, and the game’s last score coming from Michael Herlihy.

This was a great team performance. Everyone played their part and the second-half performance showed great heart and communication between the players.

Full Time: Ballymacelligott 1-12 Milltown/Castlemaine 3-06

Thank You: We wish to thank The Ballymac and Milltown/Castlemaine supporters who contributed to our lotto on Friday evening. We value your support.

Senior Ladies

Ballymac vs Abbeydorney Ladies Report:

The first score of the game was landed by Abbeydorney besides Ballymac’s positive start. Our first point came from a blistering attack from Ballymac and it was nicely slotted by our number 10 Jamie Lee O’Connor.

Both teams traded 2 point each as it was 3 points a piece at the start of the first half. Abbeydorney caught the ball from a long ball in which ended up in the back of the net. Kerri Hennessy made a brilliant penalty save but the second ball was turned into the back of the net.

A positive response saw Ballymac register another point. A free kick won by Emma Daly was nicely taken by Úna Kerins. The halftime score was 2-7 to 0-06

The first point of the second half came from a right footed shot from Kate Collins with yet another positive purple patch for Ballymac. Two more point were added by Ballymac to lessen the score but it was quickly responded with by a goal for Abbeydorney.

Eve Creedon made an excellent run and slotted it into the bottom left hand corner to bring Ballymac right back into the game. Abbeydorney scored a goal which was cancelled out by a thunderbolt of a goal by Sarah Scanlon shortly after. After a couple of attacks the game finished with the score line of 7-13 to 2-9.

Seniors:

It was very much  a case of missing the boat as Dingle forged a two point win in county league round 7 played on Saturday night in Páirc an Ághasaigh, winning  on a final scoreline of 0-14 to 1-09.

Dingle began brightly and with the aid of a stiff breeze had four points on the board, all from play by the 8th minute, before we opened our account via Conor Hayes following good interplay.

Soon after we were level, when Gearóid Savage was pulled down in the square following good work by Conor Hayes, and Jack stepped up to fire the resultant penalty to the net past báideoir Gavin O’Curnáin.

From here to the half time whistle we played some of our best football of the year, reeling off another 5 points to just 2 for Dingle to lead at half time by 3, 1-06 to 0-06.

The turnaround stemmed from midfield where Tom Hoare in particular and David Moran established a stranglehold and with strong running from the likes of Daniel Bowler from wing back and Darragh McElligott from deep we created many opportunities for our inside line where Conor Hayes, Jack and Gazza were prominent; Conor notched two from play, Darragh Mac was picked out with a lovely ball by Tom and split the posts before Tom pointed from a free to end the first half.

On the resumption we took up where we left off in the first half – Tom & David were in the ascendancy in the middle, our defence was solid resulting in plenty of opportunities up front.

However, we were wasteful in the extreme in this crucial period, kicking four wides whilst also dropping a number of balls into the keeper’s arms – it was Dingle who had the first score of the second half in the 8th minute, against the run of play, before Tom Hoare stopped the rot with a pointed free in the 15th minute; Dingle introduced Niall Geaney and along with his namesakes, Conor & Dylan began to haul Dingle back into the game – the sides were level on the 26th minute 1-09 to 0-12 as Jack and Conor Hayes added further minors to keep us in the game.

However, it was Dingle who were to finish the stronger with Dylan Geaney adding two frees to secure the points.

We did our best to redeem the situation but were left frustrated by some refereeing decisions leading to confusion and dissatisfaction among the players and spectators alike.

Team: Robert O’Connor, Darragh McElligott, Ross O’Callaghan, Stephen Nix, TJ Heaphy, Donagh Buckley, Daniel Bowler, Tom Hoare, David Moran, Padraig Griffin, BJ Keane, Jake Foley, Gearoid Savage, Jack Savage, Conor Hayes.

Subs: Ryan Carroll, Jake Hoare.

Scorers: Jack 1-02, Conor 0-04, Tom 0-02, Darragh 0-01.

County league continues next weekend with table topping Dr Crokes coming to Strand Road – fixture details will be published on social media once available.

Div 6:

A much depleted side went down to a heavy defeat to Ballylongford on Friday night last in Ballylongford.

There was not much at stake for either side with both having qualified for the next phase,  details of which will be announced later.

Great credit is due to Denis Hanafin, Cathal Sheehy  and Seán Kissane who have made a great effort with this side and have been duly rewarded with a place in the final stages.

Inter County:

It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for our players and mentors at inter county level.

Micheál Quirke was able to enjoy a stress free afternoon as Kerry destroyed Monaghan in the first round of the qualifiers on Saturday in Killarney – the game was over as a contest prior to the half time whistle where Kerry led by 0-15 to 0-02; elsewhere in Ennis, Mark Fitzgerald and Clare put it up to Cork losing by just two points in a game that hung in the balance right up to the final whistle.

Declan Quill enjoyed success with the Kerry senior ladies when winning the TG4 Munster title for the first time since 2017 – Kerry were comprehensive winners on a final scoreline of 2-15 to 0-13.

Tyrone were far too good for Kerry in the All Ireland U20 final played in Portlaoise on Sunday – commiserations to our quartet of Tomás Kennedy, Ben Hanafin, Darragh O’Connor and coach Maurice Horan.

Academy:

Another fantastic morning was had by all in the  academy on  Sunday morning in a beautiful sunny Pat Healy Park.

It was great to have our sun cream dispenser in place on such a gorgeous morning. All age groups enjoyed a fun morning of football going over the skills they have been practicing over the last few weeks at training and at home;  thanks to Declan for compiling these skill videos to share with all age groups through clubzap.  These videos are to help our Juveniles and their parents to continue to practice at home as well as at training every Sunday morning.

U10 boys in Kilmacud Crokes

Our U10 Boys team had an early start Sunday morning for the long trip to Dublin to participate in the Kilmacud Crokes tournament at a sun-drenched UCD.

Our boys played outstanding football and didn’t disappoint. The boys were incredibly well behaved and it was an amazing day out for everyone. Kudos to Kilmacud for the exceptional hospitality and making us feel so welcome.

Our U8 and U10 Girls will travel to Castleisland Desmonds for their second round of go games next Sunday 26th May at 10am and Our U9 boys will welcome Castleisland Desmonds to Ballyrickard next Sunday morning at 10am.

U13 Boys A Team

U13 Boys

A Great win away in South Kerry Sunday evening  for our KOR U13 A team, score line 4-10 to St Michaels Foilmore Skellig Rangers and KOR 4-11 in a game that sometimes spilled into a physical encounter .

The home team gave everything in the last 10 minutes to bring the game back to a single score but after having to take Caden O’Sullivan off due to a nasty cut and Kyle Power also leaving the field of play with another knock, we left with a one point victory.

Man of the match, Goalkeeper Kyle Smith made 3 brilliant saves,  Tadgh Lawlor was outstanding all evening and the Quirke boys put in real good shifts for their team.

We were delighted to gain the win on the road.  Training continues Wednesday evening at 6.30pm.  The boys will play Laune Rangers at home next Sunday evening  in Ballyrickard.

U13 Boys B Team

U13 Boys B Team:

A second win on the bounce for the U13 B team after a battling display away to Cromane/Glenbeigh/Glencar Sunday evening.   The boys were two points down at half time, but a goal by Ryan early in the second led the fight back.  Harry and Jan kept the forwards supplied with ample ball throughout the game. Final score 4:18 to 2:08. Training continues Wednesday evening at 6.30pm.  The boys have a bye next week.

Clubzap:

Our numbers were low for training, but we had a good session all the same improving our skills and we finished up with an enjoyable match. All players put in a great effort especially Luke, Paddy, Tommy and young Éanna. It’s important all our players continue to attend our training sessions and also keep practicing the skills at home during the week. Matches will be starting soon so we will be in contact with parents when we know details of same… Naomh Pádraig Abú!!

U13

We travelled out to Sackville on Sunday evening to play Ardfert in the County league. It was a beautiful evening and perfect conditions for football. Unfortunately, our performance was far from beautiful! It was well below the standard we would expect from a talented group of players. We just didn’t show up and a good Ardfert side beat us well.  Thanks to Ardfert GAA for a tough game played in the right spirit. We are back training tomorrow, Monday, at St Pat’s from 6pm to 6:45pm.

U14 Girls

Great news from Finuge last night, we secured our first win of the season. A score line of 1-05 to 0-07 points. It was a great game of football to watch and was end to end stuff. St pats girls definitely finished stronger and came out on top by a point. It was our first night that we had many back from injury and thankfully all came through OK. Great displays from everyone from 1 to 16 and all kept going for the full hour.

Lucy again played a great game in goals with her kick outs going to the St pats players most of the time. Our backs which were made up of Meaghan, Kacey, Grace, Saorlaith, Ava and Alannah played their hearts out and came up against some tough players but never gave up right up until the end.

Midfield had a tough task with two very strong players needing to be marked, but Niamh and Ashling stepped up and worked their socks off proving to be a great link between the forwards and the backs. Our forwards Ria, Sarah, Kaela, Emma, Jade, Hannah and Ailbhe played their hearts out also and picked off some lovely scores with some great teamwork.

On this occasion we have to give a special mention to Meaghan, Ashling, Alannah and Ailbhe who all came back from injury and proved to us how much of a loss they were. Onwards and upwards from here on in!!

U15

Our U15’s play in the U15 County League Division 11 Shield Semi Final against Miltown/Castlemaine in Miltown GAA on Wednesday 22nd of May at 7pm.

Senior Men: Report from Tim Lynch senior on our game versus Castleisland Desmonds last Tuesday night…..

Even though this was our best performance of the season our Round 4 back game did not go according to plan. Desmonds were a much physically stronger team that we found hard to cope with on very treacherous ground following heavy rain up to the twenty minute mark.

Then to add to our woes their goalie, Stephen Bartlett, brought off two top drawer saves, one in each half. Either of them would have brought us back into contention at vital times.

Our backs and centre field were under pressure all evening against bigger men, for the most part, but they coped well. Most of them are playing senior football for their first season so that with coaching, games and support we can be confident for the future.

Any evening that we score 1–13 means that our forwards are doing well. We started in great style with an early point from Dara Devine followed by a converted mark by Mark Lynch.

Jack Sheehan put us three up before Desmonds pulled one back. Following some great interplay between our half forwards and centre field Jamsie O’Connor landed a fine goal leaving us five to the good, 1–3 to 0–1.

Unfortunately, Luka Brosnan who was a thorn in our side all night, produced a quick goal and two points over the next few minutes to cut the lead to a solitary point. Dara Devine steadied the ship with two points from frees and put us three up after 20 minutes.

Desmonds then turned the screws, with Luka Brosnan and Kian Downey being very prominent, and despite the best efforts of our backs Desmonds got 1–5 without reply. We were very unlucky that a fine Jack Sheehan effort drew an outstanding save. Half time score 2–7 to 1–5.

The second half was a very evenly contested affair with both sides scoring eight points, with ours coming from Mark Lynch 1, Kian Sheehan 1, Jack Sheehan 2, Dara Devine 4.

Final score Na Gaeil 1–13, Desmonds 2-15. Thanks to Desmonds for having everything, except weather, in perfect condition and to the referee for a fine game which was played in a very sporting fashion.

Senior Men: Our lads were on the road again last Saturday night when they took on Fossa in Round 7 of the County League. The game started badly for us when after only 2 minutes we lost Eoin Doody to injury.

He was replaced by Morgan Madden. Fossa kicked the first 2 points before a Dara Devine free got us off the mark. Fossa made it 3-1 after 7 minutes but there was to be no further score for 7 minutes. A fine point from Dara Devine after a neat pass from Mark Lynch was the start of a great spell for our lads as we outscored Fossa by 4 points to 1.

A Fossa free soon levelled the game and then disaster struck as Dara Devine injured himself when taking on a shot and he had to leave the field. A great point from Jamesie O’Connor, his first of 3 on the night, put us ahead once more but Fossa’s O’Shea brothers reeled off 3 in a row to push them 2 ahead as halftime approached.

Then Jamesie notched one more to leave us trailing 8-7 at the break. Fossa extended their lead to 2 points from the throw in but 2 excellent scores from Mark Lynch from play levelled matters. The game continued to be very evenly contested and the teams shared 3 points apiece, ours all from play, from Kieran O’Donovan, sub Oisín Maunsell and another from Jamesie O’Connor to leave the teams level on 12 points all after 18 minutes of the second half.

Unfortunately for our lads the next score was the decisive one. A high ball into our square wasn’t cleared and Fossa managed to force the ball home for the only goal of the game. The home side followed up immediately with another free to stretch their lead to 4 points.

But credit to our lads they didn’t give up. Sub Kieran O’Connor reduced the margin to 3. Then a slick move upfield looked like it might get us the goal we needed but unfortunately Mark Lynch’s shot whizzed just wide of the right upright.

It wasn’t to be our night and Fossa saw the remaining minutes out adding 3 more points to their total. Final score: Fossa 1-16, Na Gaeil 0-13. While the result didn’t go our way on the night it was great to see Oisín Maunsell & Andrew Barry back after long term injuries. Hopefully the injuries sustained by Eoin Doody & Dara Devine on the night won’t keep them out of action for long.

Team: John Kearney, Enda O’Connor, Ryan O’Neill, Seán Barrett, Peter Doyle, Ruari O’Sullivan, Eoin Doody, Tomas O’hAinifein, Jamesie O’Connor, Damien Bourke, Kieran O’Donovan, Kian Sheehan, Mark Lynch, Dara Devine, Jack Sheehan. Emer’s Excited For What Lies Ahead As Kerry Rose

.

IT’S been quite the weekend for a young Castlegregory woman who won the Kerry Rose title on Friday night.

Emer Dineen was feeling excited about the months ahead when we caught up with her at Tralee Town Park on Saturday afternoon.

The 23 year old radiographer described her reaction after her name was called out at the selection night at the Heights Hotel Killarney.

Continued below…

.

“I was shell-shocked. I was genuinely was not expecting it at all. All of the girls were so lovely and looked fantastic on the stage. I was really surprised but so delighted,” said Emer who was overwhelmed with the messages of support since Friday night.

Emer said she loved her time getting to know the fellow Kerry Rose contestants over the past few weeks.

“We got to know each other well and it was fantastic. There was no sense of competitiveness, it was just a nice group of girls becoming friends. We’re now going to stay friends and meet up.”

So why did Emer apply to be a Rose?

“My mom put my application through, but we did it together as my grandad always wanted me to become a Rose, so I thought why not? My family were all behind me on it.”

Continued below…

.

“It’s so important to me to represent my community and the girls that have come before me. I’m excited for every single event, to get to know the other Roses and to get on the stage. It’ll be so much fun to be on the other side of it,” said Emer who regularly attended festival events in town over the years.

Emer is employed by Children’s Health Ireland and her work as a radiographer takes her to Temple Street, Connolly and Tallaght Paediatic Wings.

“I love Dublin. I live close to Temple Street so its fantastic, there’s always such a buzz around Dublin.”

The daughter of Margaret and Pádraig Dineen, Emer has two siblings, also in Dublin — Tara who is a physiotherapist in the Mater Hospital and Aideen is studying in TUD.

Emer was joined in the Town Park on Saturday by current Rose of Tralee, Róisín Wiley, who no doubt offered advice and filled her in on the fun that she can look forward to between now and late August!

John Mitchels GAA Club News

.

Senior Men – Our Division 2 team played at home against Castleisland Desmonds on Saturday last. Well done to the team and management on their performance where we secured a win on a scoreline of 1- 11 to 1 – 08.

We play Gneeveguilla away next Sunday at 2pm. Our Division 6 team were home to Spa, Killarney this Sunday with the visitors winning by one point on a scoreline of 1-12 to 3-07.

Senior Ladies –   The curtain came down on this year’s Credit Union Donal Curtin Cup campaign for us last Friday night with a home defeat to table toppers Glenflesk.

The opposition were lightning fast from the blocks and were 4 points in front after the opening five minutes with points from Keelie O’Connor and Eabha Rudden and 2 from the impressive Aoise O Donoghue.  Worse was to quickly follow as Glenflesk added goals from Alanna O.’Sullivan and Caitlyn Kelly and suddenly John Mitchels found themselves with a mountain to climb after only ten minutes.

Some rock solid defending from Anna Murphy, Diana O’Keeffe and Ava Sharma settled the home side and a sweeping move involving Tanya O’Connor, Shannon Martin and Laoise O’Sullivan ended with Grace Hamilton playing in Ava Buckley for the home sides opening point.  Almost immediately Caroline Harrington played a delightful pass to Jamie Finnegan who was fouled and Niamh Myers reduced the deficit from the resultant free.

Linda O’Connor then fielded magnificently in the middle of the field, fed Sarah Kilgallen who found Aoife O’Brien with a sweet pass and Aoife found Niamh Myers who added another point, this time from play to reduce the gap still further.

Glenflesk responded almost immediately with points from Aoise O’Donoghue and Caitlyn Kelly and just on half time John Mitchels goalkeeper, Kayleigh Collins pulled off a point blank save from Eabha Rudden to leave the half time score John Mitchels 0-03 Glenflesk 2-06.

Glenflesk opened the second half just as in the first with a point from Clodagh Mc Carthy in the second minute but any thoughts they had of taking complete control were quickly extinguished by this very resilient John Mitchels outfit.

With Anna Murphy, Diana O Keeffe and Shannon Martin driving them forward and Aoife O’Brien and Sarah Kilgallen taking a stranglehold in midfield the home side reduced the gap with points from Anna Murphy and 2 from Niamh Myers, one from a free to leave 7 between them ten minutes into the second half.

Linda O’Connor then found Grace Hamilton who fed Ava Buckley who kicked a long range point and almost immediately a wonderful move involving Laoise O’Sullivan, Tara Fitzgerald and Jamie Finnegan saw Niamh Myers kick another point to leave just 5 between the teams with 5 minutes remaining.

In spite of laying siege to the Glenflesk goal the home team were unable to breach the visitors defence in search of the elusive goal that may have saved the game and virtually on the call of time Glenflesk added a point from Aoise O’ Donoghue to see them hold on for a 2 goal victory on the score of John Mitchels 0-08 Glenflesk 2-08.

All in all a very important Credit Union Donal Curtin Cup campaign for John Mitchels, where we fulfilled all our fixtures and were competitive in all of them in a very competitive group.

Lots of highlights to look back on, an opening round win over Southern Gaels, a rousing draw with local rivals Kerins O’ Rahilly’s and some very close encounters in our remaining fixtures.

The group has also increased numerically with a number of players returning to play and a number of the younger players starting to get their initial taste of Senior football which for the future of the club is of course vitally important because at the end of the day isn’t that all that really matters.

We continue training now in preparation for the league which begins in mid July and of course the championship and we are already looking forward to both competitions.

We would like to wish all our squad members facing into the exam season the very best of luck in them as they continue on their career paths and look forward to seeing them back in the Green and Gold very shortly.  John Mitchels Abu!

THE academic year is coming to a close and for sixth years it’s a time of mixed emotions as they say farewell to schooldays.

While there’s the small matter of the Leaving Cert to be tackled next month, the attention of final year students at Presentation Secondary School was focussed on their graduation ceremony last Friday at St John’s Church.

As always, it was an emotional experience for everyone present as they reflected on their years at the school.

Continued below…

.

A mass was celebrated by Fr Mark Moriarty, including a ‘celebration of light’ with speeches from head girls Olivia Dillon and Maiya Rivas McHugh. Deputy Principal Chrissie Kelly and Principal Mairead Finucane also addressed the students and their families.

The ceremony ended with the students singing Miley Cyrus’ ‘The Climb’ but that wasn’t the end of the graduation day experience.

While families went straight back to the school assembly hall for refreshments, the students first opened the letters the girls wrote to themselves when they were first years starting in Pres back in 2016.

Cue gales of laughter, cringing and more tears on a day to remember for the girls. Scroll down for photos…
