Kerins O’Rahillys vs Fossa
Kerins O’Rahillys GAA Notes – 19.08
When you watch a football game featuring players from different eras, you aren’t just witnessing a match—you’re seeing the continuum of the sport itself. The past, present, and future collide on the pitch, and the result is a unique and profound experience.

The veterans remind us of the game’s roots, the traditions that have been passed down through generations.

The current stars demonstrate the peak of modern football, a dynamic and thrilling spectacle shaped by decades of evolution. The young players show us the future, where innovation and progress will take the game to new heights.

The veterans like David Moran, Tommy Walsh, Barry John Keane mixing it with the modern-day heroes, David and Paudie Clifford to the potential senior stars such as Tomás Kennedy, Ben Hanafin, Emmet and Cian O’Shea – a blend of eras that highlights how football, despite constant change and innovation, remains rooted in its core principles—passion, skill, teamwork, and love for the game.

The old guard, the present stars, and the future talents are all part of the same story. They may play differently, but they are bound by the same goal: to leave their mark on football and inspire the next generation of players.

Story of the game:

The story of the game was our profligacy in front of goal in the 2nd half and a strangely subdued first half performance.

Tommy Walsh was a late withdrawal through a groin strain with Gearóid Dillane taking his place and Tomás Kennedy moving to full forward. Daniel Bowler also entered the fray, taking up his usual position at wing back with Cormac Coffey dropping deep shadowing Paudie Clifford.

Fossa were fastest out of the blocks and had racked up 1-04 without reply by the 13th minute, their goal coming from the boot of Eoin Talbot who finished neatly past a helpless Rob O’Connor.

Our first score arrived shortly afterwards from a Jack Savage free and Jack was to add two more from frees to our only score from play from Tomás Kennedy in a poor first half performance; by this time, Fossa had added another 4 points, one a massive effort from David Clifford from distance which split the posts.

The half time break brought some respite and changes with Tommy Walsh and Darragh O’Connor entering the contest, both being assigned to the full forward line.

We upped our game considerably and began to win more of our one to one battles – we had added four points without reply by the 6th minute, Jack adding 3 and Tomás chipping in with a nice score from play – it was game on now but Fossa stemmed the tide with a point of their own.

The pivotal moment in this period of dominance arrived when Tommy offloaded to Tomás but his rising shot was well saved by Fossa custodian Shane O’Sullivan.

We traded points from here to the midway point with Jack very much to the fore and Cormac forsaking his marking duties on Paudie Clifford to raise another white flag.

We began to win more possession around the middle with Tom & David prominent, backed up by some fine play from Darragh McEllligott and Ross O’Callaghan, with both driving from deep and carrying the fight to Fossa.

The score now stood at 1-11 to 0-10 but the next 10 mins saw us squander a number of good chances, where we fired 4 wides, some from good positions whilst Fossa added another 3 points.

Jack was still defiant however, Tommy and Tomás carried the fight to the opposition with Jake Foley now much more involved and in the final minutes Jack added an additional 3 points, now 1-14 to 0-13 as the clock ticked into the red.

The final action saw Jack again, raising a white flag with both umpires signaling the score but the referee, from the middle of the pitch deemed otherwise and following consultation with his umpires the score was disallowed; there was one more twist, as Darragh O’Connor was fouled in possession and following some jostling, the referee issued a red card – the final whistle sounded soon after and our exit from the competition was confirmed.

Tonight was a disappointing outcome given the poor performance in the first half and the squandermania in front of goal – we had 13 wides in total to Fossa’s 4 and their clinical efficiency was the difference between the sides at the finish.

We would like to wish them all the best in the semi finals.

Final score:

KO’R 0-13

Fossa 1-14

Team: Rob O’Connor, Darragh McElligott, Ross O’Callaghan, Donagh Buckley, Ben Hanafin, Jake Foley, Daniel Bowler, David Moran, Tom Hoare, BJ Keane, Shane McElligott, Jack Savage ( 0-09), Cormac Coffey (0-01), Tomás Kennedy ( 0-02), Gearóid Dillane.

Subs: Tommy Walsh, Darragh O’Connor ( 0-01), Con Barrett.

Kerry Rose Emer Dineen who drew Gearoid O’Doherty’s winning ticket for the Tralee Parnells Buster race at Kingdom Greyhound Stadium last Saturday

Highlight of the day was the Tralee Parnells Buster Race sponsored by Rose Travel. The ticket with the winning combination (145326) had been unsold so all sold tickets were entered into a draw for the €500 1st prize.

Kerry Rose Emer Dineen did the honours and the lucky winner was Senior player Gearoid O’Doherty. Well done Doc!

A massive thank you to all the families, managers, coaches, players, and volunteers who supported the fundraiser and to those who attended on the day. Over €3,000 was raised through these efforts.

U13 Camogie
Caherslee was a hub of excitement last Saturday with 9 teams taking part in the Inaugural U13 Rose Blitz. Tralee Parnells was one of 6 Kerry clubs that participated along with  visiting teams Douglas GAA Club Ballybrown Camogie Club and Templeglantine Camogie Club for the U13 blitz.

A visit from the Roses and their Escorts at 11.30am was a huge hit with all the players and their families and added to buzz of the day. The Parnells players had great fun testing out the goalkeeping skills of all the escorts.

Ballybrown and Templeglantine topped their respective groups and met in the Rose Cup with Ballybrown running out winners after an excellent display of Camogie. On pitch 2 it was left to Cillard and Causeway to contest the Rose Shield where Causeway secured the win.

Well done to all who participated – it was a great day with some great skills on show for such young girls. The future of Camogie is definitely bright. Thanks to Kerry Camogie for organising a great event

Minor Camogie
Hard luck to our Minor ladies last Tuesday night who had a Trojan battle against Causeway in the Minor League.
Played in ideal conditions in Causeway it was an exciting game from start to finish. Tralee Parnells held the lead a half time. But unfortunately with only a small panel we ran out of steam at the end of full time, but it wasn’t without leaving everything on the pitch and Causeway came away with the win. Thanks to referee Tommy Geurin and well done to Causeway and thanks for a thrilling game.
Well done to our Minor player Emma Dunican and her Munster teammates last Saturday in their win over Leinster

Tralee Parnells U11s that played Kenmare-Kilgarvan in Kilgarvan lasrt Saturday

Ballymacelligott GAA Club News

Senior Men

The Kerry Petroleum: Premier Junior Football Club Championship Group 2 Round 3
St Senan’s V Ballymacelligott
Date: Friday, August 16th, 2024.
Venue: Mountcoal.

The weather was perfect at Mountcoal with the bright late Summer Sun. Ballymacelligott had a great start with a stiff breeze in the first half, but things got a bit slippery when it rained in the second half. It was an enthralling game from start to finish.

Ballymac opened the scoring with a point from a free from Aidan Breen. St Senan’s answered with two points, and then Niall Collins struck the back of the net for Ballymac. St Senan’s settled back into the game and scored a point immediately.

Vinnie Horan added a point for Ballymac, and Cillian Trant added one for Senan’s. Tadhg Brick scored a goal, and Paudie Quill immediately replied with one for St Senan’s. With 15 minutes left to go to half-time, the score was 1-04  2-02 in favour of Ballymac.

Despite a point by St Senan’s in the 16th Minute, Ballymac dominated the last quarter of the first half. Aidan Breen scored two points from frees. Then Darragh Sweeney punched a ball that had been kicked by Aidan Breen and punched by Maurice O’Connell towards the goal, and Darragh got it into the back of the net.

Donal Daly scored a point and another from a free from Aidan Breen, and Ballymac were in the lead 3-06 to 1-5 with six minutes left on the clock. Adam Sheehy pointed for Ballymac, St Senan’s added three points, and Aidan Breen scored the last point, from a free, of the half for Ballymac.

The Half-Time score: St Senan’s 1-08 Ballymacelligott 3-08

With fifteen minutes to go, St. Senan’s narrowed the scoreline from 2-10 to 3-11. A win or a draw for the North Kerry side would see them top the group, and they would not give up that target easily.

Ballymac’s three points in this period came from two frees from Aidan Breen and one from play from Michéal Reidy.

These last fifteen minutes were played with the same intensity as the first quarter of the match. Thomas Dillon scored a point for Senan’s, followed by a point from Danial O’Shea and a goal from Captain Vinnie Horan for Ballymac.

Two points followed for St Senan’s from Cillian Trant and Seanie McElligott, Michael Herlihy added a point for Ballymac and Senan’s answered that with one of their own. Daragh Regan and Donal Daly scored the last two points from Ballymac, and Senan’s added one in between. The final whistle blew.

It was a tough game to lose for St Senan’s with a scoreline of 2-15, but credit to all the Ballymac players who played. It resulted from hard work and teamwork and was a joy to watch. Credit goes to both sets of players who served up a memorable game and showcased all the best in football.

Everyone in Ballymac GAA sends their best wishes to Jonathan Keane and his new bride, Máire, who got married on Saturday, 17th August. Jonathan is a member of our senior squad and an integral part of our Senior A and B teams all year.

Final Score: St Senan’s 2-15 Ballymacelligott 4-15

Here’s the lineup and scorers for Ballymacelligott:
– Christy Leen
– Josh O’Keeffe
– Daniel O’Shea (0-1)

Substitutes Introduced:

– Daragh Regan (0-1)
– Seán Rice

Manager: Ian Blake
Selectors: Tony Silles, Gene O’Keeffe, Mike Broderick & Padráig Laide.
Physical Trainer: Anthony O’Leary
Physio: Mark Thompson

Here are a few interesting facts:
1. Both teams scored 36 times, averaging a score every 2 minutes.
2. In the game, Ballymacelligott had a total of eleven players who each scored at least once.
3. Aidan Breen made his championship debut for Ballymac against Listowel Emmett’s in 2008.
4. Daniel O’Shea also made his first Championship debut for Ballymac in the same game in 2008 as a substitute.
5. Breen and O’Shea are and have been great ambassadors and leaders for Ballymac GAA on and off the pitch.

Senior Ladies – Corrib Oil Senior Club League Final

John Mitchels 2-06  Killarney Legion 1-12.

John Mitchels came agonisingly close to making it back-to-back Corrib Oil Senior club league titles when they failed narrowly to Killarney Legion in this year’s final played at Fitzgerald Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Killarney Legion won the toss and elected to play with the aid of the breeze in the opening half.  They immediately won the throw up and midfielder Kerri Ann Hanrahan cut through the John Mitchels rearguard to open the scoring in the first minute.

From the kick out, Killarney Legion Captain, Kate Mc Carthy won possession and kicked a wonderful long range point to double their advantage.  When Kerri Ann Hanrahan added her second point and Aine Devlin chipped in with two more the Killarney outfit had suddenly stretched into a five point lead by the tenth minute.

A wonderful passing movement involving Tanya O’Connor, Tara Fitzgerald and Erica O’Connor resulted in Aoife O’Brien finding Grace Hamilton with a deft pass and Grace slipped the ball to Ava Buckley O’Connell who blasted the ball to the Killarney Legion net to reduce the deficit to 2 points.

Anne Marie O’Sullivan and Lauren Carey added points for Killarney Legion before Diana O’Keeffe combined with Shannon Martin who found Shauna Hanafin with a clever handpass and Shauna scored a delightful point to reduce the gap to 3 points.

Lauren Carey added her second point in the twenty fifth minute and just on the stroke of half time a long range effort from Lauren Carey rebounded back off the upright back to the unmarked Orianne Mc Gillycuddy who blasted the ball to the John Mitchels net to leave the half time score  John Mitchels 1-01 Killarney Legion 1-08 and left the John Mitchels ladies with a mountain to climb.

The mountain started to resemble Everest as points from the industrious Kerri Ann Hanrahan and Orianne Mc Gillycuddy pushed them 9 points in front by the fifth minute of the second half.

Things started to go from bad to worse when Killarney Legion were awarded a penalty but John Mitchels goalkeeper, Kayleigh Cllins pulled off one of her trademark saves and kept the Tralee outfit’s hopes alive.

Kayleigh’s save seemed to inspire the John Mitchels ladies and with the introduction of Anna Murphy Stack, Ashleigh Murphy and Michaela Murphy they seemed to get to grips with the opposition.

Niamh Myers then added a point from a free following a foul on Lynda O’Connor and when Ellie O’Rahilly was fouled from the resultant kick out, Niamh added another point from a free.

John Mitchels added some fresh legs in the shape of Clara Dowd, Emma Carmody and Laoise O’Sullivan and with Simi Ogungsbesan and Sarah Kilgallen taking control of the midfield sector, Niamh Myers scored yet another free to reduce the gap to 6 points midway through the second half.

Orianne Mc Gillycuddy increased the lead to 7 a minute later and then a wonderful John Mitchels move ended with Ava Buckley O’Connell firing a piledriver that struck the crossbar and went over the bar rather than under it.

Kate Mc Carthy and Niamh Myers then exchanged pointed frees and with three minutes remaining a very clever free kick movement involving Sarah Kilgallen and Shauna Hannafin resulted in Niamh Myers scoring a fantastic goal to reduce the leeway to a goal.

Try as they might, John Mitchels were unable to breach the Killarney Legion defence for the equaliser and at the call of play the final score was John Mitchels 2-06  Killarney Legion 1-12.

While the result didn’t go our way on Wednesday night, the club can take great pride in the squad’s achievement in reaching it’s second Senior club league final in a row.

The fact that again over 20 players were in attendance gives an indication of how far the squad has come in a very short space of time.  The squad has now got a good blend of youth and experience.

We would like to thank our large band of loyal supporters who travelled to Fitzgearld Stadium and encouraged the players from first to last whistle.

As a complete aside, the game had originally been fixed for Monday night but Killarney Legion due to being missing some players on the Monday night requested us to play the fixture on the Wednesday night instead.

Naturally we agreed to their request and while we may have lost the game, it is fair to say that by doing so, we upheld the integrity of the club, the game and the competition and at the end of the day isn’t that worth more than any trophy. John Mitchels Abu!

Mothers & Others Notes –  Training session at 7:30 pm on Wednesday. We aim to create a fun, non-competitive space for women to play Ladies Gaelic Football and build connections within the community. If you’re looking for a way to get fit, make new friends, and have a laugh, come along! No experience necessary. Contact Aisling on 087 2428358 for   information.

Players and Management of the John Mitchels Minor Team who played Dr. Crokes last Monday.

Minor Team – Minor County Championship Round 2

John Mitchels 3-9

Dr Crokes 1-13

Our first ever minor County Championship game played in Ballyseedy as John Mitchels resulted in a great win for our Minors who were very determined and organised against a strong Crokes outfit.

The first half saw goals from Gearoid White (2) and Luke Sullivan with points by both to give us a 6 point advantage playing with a strong breeze. Crokes came out with huge energy in the second half and clawed there way back into the game closing it to 1 point before a Jim Dowd goal restored our 4 point lead.

Crokes won a lot of frees & kept plugging away but our defence held solid and the final whistle eventually sounded to the delight of a big home crowd. Well done to the team and management it was in every sense an historic evening!

Congratulations to Mitchels player Fionàn Brosnan & Coach Clive Callaghan on their 2 point victory in today’s U16 All Ireland Final against Meath. Well done Team & Management. Minor training continues on Monday evening at 7pm.

A special word of thanks to the U9 players that travelled last Thursday night and indeed for the last number of games. It is no easy task to step up in that grade and they have acquited themselves well. There is no fixture set down for this coming Thursday but we will arrange some friendlies over the next few weeks against some local teams.

We trained on Sunday morning and worked through a number of drills. Great enthusiasm from this group considering a lot of them would have stayed up late for the parade and fireworks. Training as usual at 10:30 next Sunday.

Under 13 Boys – Well done to our boys who represented the club at the Rose Cup on Saturday. We lost in the Shield Final to Milltown Castlemaine. The boys effort was immense and all there was in the end was one kick of the ball that separated both sides. We are extremely proud of the team.

Thanks to all who were there for a long but enjoyable day especially to the parents, supporters, players and management team. Our thanks to Tralee Town Board for organising the event and to Na Gaeil for their hospitality on the day. In total the team played 5 competitive games and had a great day of football.

THE annual Celebration of Light took place once again at the Tralee Bay Wetlands on Sunday evening attended by a number of Roses.

Organised by Recovery Haven Kerry, the evening was an opportunity for people to join together in hope and light in honour of those touched by and lost to cancer.

The evening was MC’d by Sean Lyons and featured a poignant performance from the Kerry Choral Union, as well as a selection of prayers and readings from a number of special guests.

Recovery Haven wished to thank everyone who came along to make it such a special evening, especially the Roses, Kerry Choral Union, Tralee Bay Wetlands, Margaret Kissane at the Lakeside Cafe and MC Sean Lyons. Scroll down for photos…

Temporary Changes To Security Screening Of Liquids, Aerosols And Gels At Kerry Airport

.

KERRY Airport has advised that due to an EU regulatory change regarding certain security screening equipment, the following Liquids, Aerosols And Gels (LAGS) rules will come into effect at Kerry Airport from September 1, 2024.

1. Only LAGS in containers of 100ml or less can be brought through security – these can stay inside your cabin bag and there are no restrictions on the number of containers or type of LAG (provided they are not dangerous goods) – they do not have to be in a plastic bag.

2. They will accept lags in containers over 100ml but these must fall into the category of baby foods/milk, medicines or special dietary requirements – these must be presented at the screening point outside of your cabin bag but do not have to be in a plastic bag – they will be subject to additional screening after they have passed through the x-ray equipment.

Continued below…

.

3. All other LAGS in containers over 100ml, aside from point 2 above, will be rejected and you will be asked to surrender them at the screening point for disposal.

If you have LAGS that fall into the category of point 3 above then please ensure they are packed into your hold baggage or else do not bring them.

It’s important to note that the screening equipment itself, which is of a high quality, is not in question and also that the European Commission are not acting on any new threat information, but rather they are responding as a precautionary measure to a temporary technical issue that has been identified.

Kerry Airport expects to resume allowing all LAGS to remain inside cabin baggage at some stage in 2025. For more information, please visit https://KerryAirport.ie/lags-changes-explained/

THE Kerry Rose showed no signs of nerves as she appeared on stage at the first Rose Of Tralee Selection Night.

Emer Dineen from Castlegregory was interviewed by co-host Dáithí Ó Sé where we discovered the radiographer based in Dublin was a devout Swiftie with a cheerleading past!

Emer told Dáithí about her work with Children’s Health Ireland at hospitals in Dublin and how much she loves her job and the city.

Dáithí brought up the fact that she was a cheerleader and ended up giving the host a lesson in some basic moves with pom-poms.

Continued below…

.

Emer declared her love for Taylor Swift and said going to the three concerts at the Aviva in June was “the best experience of my entire life”. When asked if it was better than the Rose Of Tralee she diplomatically said it was on a par.

She described being the Kerry Rose as a special experience, especially having grown up going to the Festival every year.

Finally, Emer’s interview ended with her using Lámh — the manual sign system used by children and adults with intellectual disability and communication needs in Ireland — to sign the lyrics of ‘Perfect’ by Ed Sheehan.

She did the county proud and who knows, maybe it’s Kerry’s year?

IT’S been quite an experience for Emer Dineen as Kerry Rose and excitement is building for the Dineen family ahead of her appearance at the selection tonight.

The Castlegregory woman, who works as a radiographer, will be interviewed onstage tonight and is really enjoying the whole experience so far.

“My week has been absolutely phenomenal,” said Emer, speaking to us on Sunday. “As you can hear from my voice I am hoarse from all the shouting and singing. It’s a once in a lifetime experience and I’m loving every second of it.”

Continued below…

.

So what has been the highlight of her week so far?

“That’s a difficult one to answer. Meeting my Rosebud Clodagh was a real highlight. Getting to know the girls on the tour was another and the parades, yesterday and today, were just amazing.”

After such an experience, Emer says she would recommend it to anyone thinking of entering for next year.

“Oh without a shadow of a doubt, go for it. If anyone has just thought about it for a second, just do it. Even the run up to the Kerry selection was so much fun with day trips and visits to events. The girls I met are still in touch sending me messages of support this week.”

Best of luck to Emer tonight!

IT was certainly a super Sunday in Tralee as the sun shone and brought huge crowds to the streets.

The highlight was the ‘Love For The Roses’ parade where the Rose contestants once again boarded their floats to meet the masses.

It was a beautiful day for it too with bands and dancers providing colour and noise which was appreciated by the large crowd. We were there to capture the atmosphere…

Taoiseach Officially Opens New Listowel Bypass

.
The new N69 Listowel Bypass was officially opened today.

THE Taoiseach, Simon Harris TD, has officially opened the new Listowel Bypass which will divert 7,000 vehicles per day away from Listowel town centre and which will greatly enhance infrastructure and accessibility in north Kerry.

The €62m N69 Listowel Bypass is a six-kilometre western and northern bypass of Listowel town centre and consists of approximately 3.6km of new road, 2.3km of on-line improvement of the existing network and 1.5km of new roundabouts and improvements at junctions.

The Taoiseach was joined at the official opening by the Cathaoirleach and Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, the Chief Executive of Transport Infrastructure Ireland and local landowners who facilitated the construction of the road.

Continued below…

.

Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Breandán Fitzgerald described it a historic day for the county: “Traffic congestion in Listowel has long been identified as hampering transport and commercial activity. The bypass will divert some 250 heavy goods vehicles away from the town centre each day which will also greatly enhance the safety of motorists and pedestrians in the town.”

Taoiseach Simon Harris said: “This new road is a major boost for north Kerry in terms of transport, accessibility, commercial activity and tourism. It greatly improves movement across the region including along the busy N69 road between Listowel and Limerick. My government is committed to delivering projects such as this across the country with the support of local authorities and Transport Infrastructure Ireland.”

The designers of the scheme were Jacobs Engineering (Dublin) and the main contractor was Wills Brothers (Mayo). The project was overseen by the Kerry National Roads Office (Kerry County Council).

REPORT: Kerry FC Put In Valiant Effort But Bohemians Win On Penalties

.

Ivan Hurley reports on Kerry’s clash with Bohemians in the Sports Direct FAI Cup Third Round on Sunday afternoon in Tralee…

Kerry FC 2-2 Bohemians (Bohemians win 4-2 on penalties)

In an afternoon of what could have been for the underdogs as a plucky Kerry FC side made Premier Division side Bohemians sweat as they progressed past the country’s newest team on penalties after an absorbing 120 minutes in Mounthawk Park on Sunday.

Having convincingly defeated Cobh Ramblers in the second round last month, Kerry were rewarded for their efforts with a dream draw against SSE Airtricity Premier Division side Bohemians.

With the 7-time winners and last year’s finalists coming to Tralee on the festival weekend, tickets were in high demand as the game had the sold-out signs up for several weeks.

Continued below…

.

But Kerry didn’t show any nerves and were highly competitive in the opening 20 minutes, creating passes and getting into the final third of the pitch.

But despite the Kingdom’s best efforts, it was the visitors who scored the game-opening goal, James Clarke finding the net for the Gypsies who took a somewhat deserved lead. But Kerry fought back well and Ryan Kelliher drew the hosts level in the 43rd minute.

Cian Barrett did really well in the box to turn and find space before letting a cross-goal shot off his right boot. The ball looked to be heading wide but Kerry’s top goal scorer was at the back post to turn the ball home and send Mounthawk Park into ecstasy.

But the visitors were ahead just 90 seconds later as Grieve pounced on a cross with his shoulder to guide the ball past Aaron O’Sullivan in the Kerry goal.

So the Kingdom went in behind at the break having clawed their way back into the game just moments earlier.

Kerry could have found a leveller just moments into the second half, Nathan Gleeson’s shot went just over the crossbar. But Kerry did level the game in the 53rd minute, Ryan Kelliher once again adding himself to the scoresheet.

He chased down the Bohemians goalkeeper who took too much time over a clearance. He dispossessed the keeper and shot home into an empty net and the roof nearly came off Mounthawk Park.

But from there on out, Bohemians squandered numerous chances to put the game well. Kerry’s back 4 stood strong and snuffed out the danger putting bodies on the line but you’d have to wonder how Bohemians missed some of their chances in front of goal.

McDonnell, Smith and Tierney all came within inches of getting Bohs back in front while Rooney shot inches wide in the 95th minute when the game should have been dead and buried.

So Kerry were entering into extra time for the first time in the club’s history and the 30 minutes were played out much the same as the final thirty in ordinary time.

Aaron O’Sullivan pulled off some fantastic saves while Oran Crowe was throwing himself into any sort of challenge to keep the ball out.

Andy Spain, Ethan Kos and Sean O’Connell were all gallant in defence while Finn Barrett made several goal-saving challenges throughout the extra period.

With the sides still at a stalemate, we went to the penalty spot to decide the tie. A perfect 4 penalties for the visitors while Kerry missed 2 along the way meant the Premier Division survived a massive shock to advance to the quarter-final.

Kerry’s attention now returns to the First Division campaign and with the remaining games in single digits and some crucial positions to play for, it will be an important final couple of weeks for Conor McCarthy’s men.

Kerry FC: A O’Sullivan, F Barrett, E Kos, A Spain, S O’Connell, O Crowe, R Teahan, C Barrett, N Gleeson, R Kelliher, S McGrath. Subs: K Amechi for S McGrath, 69, D Okwute for R Kelliher, 83, C Brosnan for R Teahan, 95, S Aladesanusi for N Gleeson, 114.

Bohemians: K Chorazka, L Smith, J Mills, L Kevanagh, B McManus, D Devoy, A McDonnell, J Clarke, R Tierney, D Rooney, A Greive. Subs: Akintunde for A Greive, 58, D Grant for J Clarke, 66, D McDaid for D Rooney, 95, F Piszczek for B McManus, 107.

THE Friday night of the Festival used to see the county’s most glamorous night of the year in the shape of the Rose Ball, but sadly that appears to be consigned to history.

But there was still great style to behold last night as the Fall Designer Fashion Show, in association with Kerry Cancer Support Group, was held at The Rose Hotel.

Around 200 ladies were present at the hotel, enjoying a welcome reception of champagne and canapés followed by the main event at 8pm.

The fashion show saw the latest autumn collections from top designers Synan O’Mahony and Cathy Troth to name a few, along with some of Kerry’s top boutiques including MacBees, Annburys & Scarlette.

Guests continued the celebration at the after party with live entertainment in Dott’s Bar from Rod Stewart, Joe Dolan, and Tom Jones tribute acts.

There were spot prizes worth €3,000, including a prize for the best dressed lady. Additionally, guests received goodie bags sponsored by Horan’s Healthstore. Proceeds from the event went to Kerry Cancer Support Group. Scroll down for photos…

PREVIEW: Kerry Welcome Bohemians For Sell-Out Cup Tie In Mounthawk Park

.

Ivan Hurley previews a massive game in the short history of Kerry FC as they welcome Irish football royalty, Bohemian FC in the Sports Direct Men’s FAI Cup Third Round clash in Mounthawk Park on Sunday afternoon…

It’s the game the majority of the Kerry faithful have been counting down to since the draw was made a number of weeks ago.

The famous Bohemians are the visitors to Mounthawk Park tomorrow. Tickets are like gold dust in the Kingdom, with the sold-out signs popping up after a matter of hours of first going on sale.

So with the Rose of Tralee festival in full swing in the town since Friday, the festival atmosphere is sure to make its way north of Denny Street to Mounthawk Park for the blockbuster occasion.

Continued below…

.

Having only faced one side from the top division in the past, the opportunity to welcome one of the country’s stand-out clubs is sure to be a memorable occasion for the Kerry faithful.

But progressing to the Quarter Final of the cup is the priority and a historic afternoon could quickly turn into a historic day in the club’s history should the underdog advance to the last eight.

Without a doubt, it would be a monumental undertaking for Kerry to dump last year’s finalists out of the competition, but anything is possible in Mounthawk Park.

Despite a disappointing defeat to Cobh in Tralee last time out, Kerry’s home form has been impressive in 2024, going 5 unbeaten in Mounthawk since early May.

Continued below…

.

Bohemians come into the game after a disappointing 3-2 defeat in Dalymount to Waterford FC, considering the Dubliners were 2-0 up in the game.

Bohemians needed a penalty to knock out Tallaght-based Shamrock Rovers out of the cup in the 2ndRound. Kerry were impressive in their 2-0 dispatching of Cobh Ramblers in St Colman’s Park back in July.

So the scene is set for a carnival clash in the home of Kerry football tomorrow afternoon, if you have a ticket hold it close to your chest and if not, make sure your calendar is kept clear from 4-6 pm on Sunday.

If you’re lucky enough to have a ticket, we are looking forward to welcoming you to Mounthawk Park. As ever, the game will be broadcast live on LOITV, with a pre-game show getting underway from 15:40 on Sunday afternoon. A full 3 camera set-up will be in place for the fixture.

The game will also be live on Radio Kerry’s Weekend Sport programme with full live and uninterrupted commentary from the gantry.

This is just the second time Kerry FC will face a team from the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division.

The Kingdom faced Drogheda United at this stage of the competition 12 months ago. Kerry went down by a single goal to nil on that occasion, hitting the crossbar on the way to a narrow defeat

Speaking to the media earlier this week, James Sugrue said they are waiting on an update regarding to new signing Oran Crowe’s availability.

Oran required several stitches after getting an elbow to the face in Friday’s defeat to Cobh Ramblers. Antonio Tuta has returned to training following an ankle injury picked up in the win against Cobh in the 2nd Round last month.

Valerii Dolia remains sidelined long term. New signing Cian Barrett is available for the game, he was on the bench for Shamrock Rovers in the defeat to Bohemians but as he didn’t make it onto the field, he isn’t cup-tied for this one

“Look we are just taking it as another game for us,” said James Sugrue. “Obviously, it’s knockout so it can all depend on the day. It’s very exciting, it’s great for the town, great for the county of Kerry and great for the club and supporters, but we must keep our heads down and work no differently from any other game.

“The players need to relish the occasion, go out and don’t let it pass them by. These are the games everyone wants to be involved in, in front of big crowds, but you have to turn up on the day, get the job done and move on to the quarter-final.”

Ballyduff Beat Crotta In A Thriller To Win Minor Title

.
Kerry Minor Hurling champions Ballyduff.

Mike O’Halloran reports on the Keane’s SuperValu Kerry Minor Hurling Final at Austin Stack Park on Friday evening…

Ballyduff are the Keane’s SuperValu Kerry minor hurling champions for 2024.  Ballyduff beat Crotta O’Neills by 1-17 to 2-10 in a fantastic display by both teams, with great skill and sportsmanship shown.

Crotta had the best of the first half and led at half time 2-07 to 0-09. A great display by Evan O’Sullivan where he scored two goals from long range frees.

Continued below…

.

Crotta were very impressive all through the first half and started the second half better than Ballyduff, but Ballyduff clawed their way back into the game with frees from Dylan Costello and a goal from Jake Rochford.

Crotta were awarded a free on 64 minutes to level the game. There were six Ballyduff players on the line and the ball was parried for a 65. Further scores from Ballyduff sealed the win. A great display from both sides.

Finnegan On Films: Two Eastwood Gems Among Some Classics On The Box

.

Our movie guy, James Finnegan, has some films on TV to distract you from the festival fun in Tralee tonight…

Somewhere between trying to fill that Olympic sized hole in our lives, and attempting to pick a winning Rose, comes a number of very entertaining films.

Where Eagles Dare (Saturday 2.50pm RTE1) is a staple of Saturday afternoon escapist cinema.  When an American general is held captive by the Nazis in a heavily defended fortress in the Alps, a crack team of British soldiers and an American Lieutenant are sent to rescue him.

However, it is apparent very soon that there is a traitor in their mist, and so begins a tale of double and triple cross with some pretty impressive action scenes and baddies who are, thankfully, terribly bad shots.

.

Starring Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood, Patrick Wymark, Mary Ure, Robert Beatty and Ingrid Pitt, this Alastair MacLean script and book were outstanding commercial successes. Plus there is the famous stirring Ron Goodwin theme in which to wallow.

Jack Black excels in a role that was quite literally written for him in School of Rock (Saturday 6.35pm RTE1)

Dewey Finn (Black) is an enthusiastic amateur rock musician who is fired from his band.  Posing as a supply teacher to make some money, he moulds his students into a rock band in an attempt to win the forthcoming Battle of the Bands.

This is a wonderfully entertaining film, where the children are all talented because director Richard Linklater insisted on the cast being able to play their instruments as well as sing.  The acting could be taught!

This also stars Joan Cusack, Sarah Silverman, Miranda Cosgrove and Mark White, and has gone on to spawn a very popular and successful Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.

Continued below…

.

Saving Private Ryan (Saturday 9.20pm RTE2), directed by Steven Spielberg, is renowned for the battleground scenes set during the Normandy landings, although it is not in fact the opening scene as is often stated.

A group of American soldiers search the battlefields of France, looking for a missing infantryman who has been given compassionate leave to return home, as his brothers have already been killed in this conflict.

As you would expect, there are many spectacular scenes, and of course with a cast including Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Edward Burns and Tom Sizemore among others, there is plenty of philosophy on the meaning of life and war which helped win Spielberg a Best Director Academy Award, although it perhaps surprisingly lost out on Best Picture to “Shakespeare in Love”

Play Misty for Me (Saturday 10.35pm TG4) is a superlative Clint Eastwood psychological thriller in which he stars and makes his directorial debut.

He plays DJ Dave Garver, who has what he considers to be a casual relationship with Evelyn (Jessica Walter).  However, Evelyn has a very different interpretation.  So when Dave takes up with an old flame Tobie (Donna Mills) you know it is not going to end well. Enjoy!

.
Eamon Cunningham, Tralee Municipal District Officer, Kerry County Council, Breda Moriarty, Environmental Awareness Officer, Kerry County Council and Cllr Mikey Sheehy, Mayor of Tralee joined Ella Seery from The Gum Litter Taskforce (GLT) in Tralee Town Park as part of its summer roadshow across the country to raise disposal awareness of gum litter and its environmental impacts. Photo: Pauline Dennigan

THE Gum Litter Taskforce (GLT) took to the streets of Tralee today as a part of its Summer Roadshow.

The interactive Roadshow works with local authorities and communities across the country to carry out fun and engaging education and awareness initiatives that demonstrate the proper means of gum disposal and raise awareness of the environmental and fiscal impacts of gum litter.

Now in its seventeenth year, the campaign is a collaboration between Food Drink Ireland, the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications, the chewing gum industry, and local authorities.

Continued below…

.

Welcoming the Roadshow to Kerry, Breda Moriarty, Environmental Awareness Officer for Kerry County Council said: “We are delighted to welcome the Gum Litter Taskforce to Tralee. It is a great initiative that helps us to educate and inform the people of Kerry of the negative impacts of gum litter on our local community.”

This year’s campaign sees representatives from the Gum Litter Taskforce working with local authorities and communities to carry out education and awareness initiatives that demonstrate the proper means of gum disposal and raise awareness of the environmental and fiscal impacts of improper disposal.

Then, in September, the Gum Litter Taskforce’s Bin It! education programme will travel across the country and deliver 60 performances a year to primary and secondary schools nationwide, with the ambition to visit 180 schools by 2025. This is in addition to useful lesson plan material that has been made available to almost 730 schools across Ireland.
