Senior Ladies

Congratulations to our Senior Ladies on their win over Spa of Killarney today. 1-13 to 1-3. Onto the Semi Final of the Bons Secours Kerry Ladies Gaelic Football Association Junior A Championship, away to the Mighty Cromane who had a comprehensive 5-25 to 3-1 victory over ISG. Venue and Time will be decided in due course and put up on Social Media outlets. 

A superb first half performance set us on the way to victory with a 1-8 to 1-1 halftime lead, where our forwards were patient in working the ball and our defenders were dogged in their refusal to yield.

Our performance level dropped in the second half, with a bit of sloppiness getting into our play, but with 10 subs entering the fray, 5 on both sides, that was bound to happen.

Thank You for the large and vociferous support today, it was great to see so many out to cheer on our Ladies. See you all in Cromane next Sunday. ##ballymacabu 💙💛

U13’s County Championship Division 3

Ballymacelligott LGFA v Southern Gaels LGFA B

A great performance by Our U.13 team, made of U.11’s, U12’s & U.13’s in a good win against Southern Gaels in Ballymac on Sunday evening. Mighty teamwork from the backs through to the forwards, resulting in many fine scores.

They now progress to the U.13 Championship semi final against Desmonds or Firies, Sunday next. This was a first competitive match for many of the younger girls, and they did not disappoint one bit.

A big thank you to Ruairi O’ Rahilly, who trained the U.12 team last year and Liam Sweeney, currently part of the U.14/U16 girls set up for their help, team performances all round.

U17 Ladies Club Championship

Ballymac v John Mitchels Wednesday 18th in Knocknagoshel at 6.30pm.

Patrick White and Eddie O’Connell

Here is Eddie O’Connell from the Ballymac GAA Lotto Committee, a true embodiment of our community spirit, presenting Patrick White with the €50.00 meal voucher he won from O’Riada’s Bar & Restaurant. All the weekly luck dips for five weeks were put in a hat, and Patrick, one of our own members, won a meal voucher from O’Riada’s Bar and Restaurant Ballymacelligott.

The lucky dips for the five weeks up to and including the 23rd of September will be entered into a draw to win €50.00 Voucher from the Halfway Shop. 

This week’s Jackpot is €3,100.

U13 Boys

Our U13 boys togged out for the Castleisland District Shield in Castleisland this evening at 5.30. They played a tough game of football against Knock/Brosna. The boys didn’t turn up in the first half, and the half-time score was 1-10 to 3 pts to opposition. 

We came out a stronger second half, but it just wasn’t enough. The final score was Ballymac 1-7 to Knock/Brosna 1-14. Thanks to our few U11 boys for helping out.

St Kierans Minors

Well done to the St Kieran’s Minors on winning the County Final tonight. We especially congratulate the Ballymac players on the team and squad: vice-captain Eoin Moriarty, Mairtin McKivergan, Jack Joy, Eoghan Joy, Gearoid Coughlan, Padraig Reidy, Michael Quirke, Conal Savage, Ciaran O’Connell, Gearoid Healy, Michael O’Connor and Cian Harris.

Academy

A joyous morning spent with our U5s at Academy this week. The kids loved the drills and games, with a giant game of duck, duck, goose the favourite of the day. A massive thanks to our U5s coaches who have endless energy (and patience) to entertain more than 20 of our youngest players each week.

Our Academy training will be in the training pitch at 11am every Sunday see you there

Ballymac GAA Lotto Draw Results from 9th September 2024

The Ballymacelligott GAA Club weekly Lotto draw took place this evening in the Halfway Shop, Ballymacelligott, on Monday, 9th September 2024.

Maureen O’Shea of Ballymacelligott GAA Club and Thomas McQuinn from The Halfway Shop and Bar conducted the draw live on Facebook.

The numbers drawn were 1, 14, 18 and 29.

There was no winner of the Jackpot of €3000.00

Family Fun Day

Our healthy Clubs committee are delighted to announce their Family Fun Day for this year, will take place on Sunday 22nd of September at 12 noon.

There will no training on that day so come and enjoy the fun, competitive obstacle course and games with Kenny the Clown entertaining the youngsters. We ask families to bring a contribution for lunch / healthy snacks / fruit etc.

Many hands make light work so please help out where you can with catering / obstacle stewarding/ supervision / set up etc.

Bikes required again where possible for the annual slow bicycle race… get practicing and keep your fingers crossed for the forecast!Please spread the word, we encourage all age groups to attend this event including the obstacle course!

Juvenile Academy

U9A mighty evening of football in Blennerville as our U9 boys and girls hosted Austin Stacks. Everyone got to play three games and both teams played some superb football. Smiles all round at the end. A big thanks to Eamonn and Austin Stacks for calling out to us.U11St Pats U-11’s had no game last week so we were training last Sunday. We practiced on our kicking, tackling, and handling. Next Sunday is the family fun day starting at 12 noon hope to see you all there …Naomh Pádraig Abú!!

U12 GirlsOur U12 girls hosted Shannonside/Tarbert yesterday evening in the final county go games match of the programme. Shannonside/Tarbert were unfortunately down some players due to injury and illness and some of our girls volunteered to play with them. The first half was dominated by our opponents where we struggled to get the ball into their half, albeit playing into a stiff breeze.

However, we dominated the second half kicking some great scores from a wide range of players. Many thanks to Shannonside Tarbert for coming to Blennerville, to referee Frank McLoughlin who was excellent, letting the game flow.

A big thanks to Kacey, Eve, Rachel, Ria, Cara and Sibah who volunteered to play with Shannonside Tarbert. Training continues on Sunday from 11am to 12pm.

We trained on Sunday morning in lovely sunshine. We started the session with prison boxes, then a possession game, then a shooting drill followed a small, sided game with Rachel’s team getting the better of Rosa’s. We have no training next Sunday due to the family fun day taking place.

U13 Girls

Our U13 girls are playing in their Club Championship Semi-Final on Sunday 22nd of September. Venue, Time, and Opponent to be confirmed. Please keep an eye out on social media, O’Shea’s Gala, Old Clubhouse for details.

U15’s

Our U15’s St Pats/Kerins O’Rahillys take part in the Tralee/St Brendan’s U15’s District Championship on Sunday 22nd of September at 11.30am against Ballymac in Strand Road Main Club Field.

St Brendan’s Board

 St Brendan’s Board played South Kerry last Sunday evening they had a win, they are now against St Kieran’s on Saturday 21st of September at 7pm in Austin Stacks Park.

Senior B’s

Our seniors played against Cromane last Saturday evening, both teams were determined to be winners. Cromane got the first two points of this game with Kieran Hurley putting his mark on the game with a point.

Point for point game Cromane added another point with Ben Sharp putting a point on the board. St Pats took control of the game with four points coming from Joe Costello, James Friel and Brian Murphy. In strong form on the day Adrian Greaney shot a goal past Cromane goalkeeper.

Two final scores from Cromane with another point finished the first half with St Pats 1-06 Cromane 0-05 St Pats begun the second half with three points coming from James Friel and Kieran Hurley, Cromane managed to get a point and a goal quick after St pats scores. Kieran Hurley and James Friel quick to capitalize on the lead added another point each.

Adrian Greaney to put another score on the board before Cromane added their one final point of the game. Kieran Hurley added one final point for St Pats to end the game St Pats 1-13 Cromane 1-07 This game was allowed our more experienced players to stretch their legs and show the younger players what is takes to win a game.

Great performances by all the team but special mention to Joe Costello, Eoin Sayers and Eamon Sayers who added their own unique finesse to the game.

RIP: Our sincere sympathy to the Clear and O’Connor families on the sad passing of Siobháin Clear (nee O’Connor) last week. May she rest in peace.

Wedding bells: Congratulations to our senior player Kieran O’Donovan and his wife Orla on their wedding last week. We wish them a long & happy life together.  

Fé 11: Well done to our u11 boys team who put on a great display of football against Churchill last Thursday evening in Killeen. 

Under 13 girls

Fé 13 cailíni: Comhghairdeas to our u13 girls team who defeated Knock/Brosna last night in the quarter-final of the u13 County Championship. Their semi-final will be played next Sunday. Time and venue TBC. 

Fé 14: Last Saturday our u14 boys took part in the annual Lee Strand Tournament in Connolly Park. The lads topped their group following wins over Ballymac and Na Piarsaigh but then went down to Austin Stacks in the semi-final.  

 Fé 15: The u15 Central Region Division 1 final will go ahead at 7pm in Austin Stack Park next Wednesday (18th) featuring Na Gaeil and Austin Stacks. Go n-éirí libh!    

Fé 17 cailíní: Good luck to our u17 girls who will host Kerins O’Rahillys on Wednesday in the County Championship at 6.30pm. Senior Men: Round 1 of the Garvey’s SuperValu County Championship took place last Saturday night in Austin Stack Park where our opponents were Shannon Rangers.

A first minute free from Dara Devine gave Na Gaeil an early lead but Rangers levelled on the 7th minute following a point from their full forward Jack Kennelly. Rangers enjoyed a lot of possession in the first quarter but kicked multiple wides.

A Dara Devine free on 13 minutes put Na Gaeil ahead 2-1 before 2 frees from Rangers either side of a Darragh Reen point from play levelled the game at 3 points each after 20 minutes. The final 10 minutes of the half were shaded by Na Gaeil with points from Dara Devine (free), Dan Goggin and Peter Doyle to 2 points from our opponents leaving Na Gaeil ahead 6-5 at halftime.

Unfortunately for us Shannon Rangers dominated the early minutes of the 2nd half, especially around midfield, and added 4 points on the trot. Peter Doyle then cut the gap to 2 with still plenty time remaining. But it wasn’t to be our night.

Kennelly scored another for Rangers and 2 minutes later they struck for a killer goal to leave them with a 6 points advantage. From there there was going to be no way back for our lads. A late goal from Dan Goggin and a Mark Lynch free were only consolation scores as Shannon Rangers ran out winners by 1-13 to 1-9. Next Saturday in Round 2 we hope for a better result when we take on Spa in Milltown at 4pm. 

Changes to Car Park: We would like to make patrons aware of the new wheelchair accessible parking bays and the yellow box for ambulance parking which have been added to the club’s car parks recently. Please keep them free at all times for people who need them.

 Na Gaeil cycle club: Cycle each Saturday at 9.30am and Wednesdays at 6.30pm from Na Gaeil club. Everyone is welcome to come for a nice friendly cycle. 

Cards: The weekly 45 card game is held every Wednesday night starting at 9pm. Everyone is welcome.

U11 Hurling 

Tralee Parnells U11s took part in the Con O Calahane Memorial tournament hosted by Na Piarsaigh of Limerick at the weekend

Our under 11 boys had a change in their training schedule last week as they swapped Caherselee for an adventure walk in Ballyseedy woods followed by pizza and a puck around.

A big thank you to our U11 coach Niall Hayles of Brio Brunch for organising, Sean Street Pizza for supplying the delicious pizza and to Clifford’s Cash and Carry for supplying the drinks. A great evening had by all.

On Sunday the boys stepped into the unknown as they participated in the Con O Calahane Memorial tournament hosted by Na Piarsaigh Limerick playing. 

The boys were up against the hurling heavy weights of Munster including the hosts Na Piarsaigh of Limerick, Na Pairsaigh of Cork, Newport of Tipperary, Sixmilebridge of Clare and Ballygunnar of Waterford. 

The coaches were really proud of all the boys who played some fantastic hurling, displayed great heart and courage with them being highly completive in all games and even winning some along the way.  This was a fantastic opportunity for our club to participate in the tournament and we would like to thank the Na Pairsaigh club for an extremely warm welcome in what was an exceptionally well run competition.

A special thank you to all who traveled and helped out the group along throughout the day.

Tralee Parnells U13s who took part in the Aoibheann Duffy Memoral Blitz at the Weekend

U13 Camogie Well done to our Under 13 Camogie team who reached the final of the Aoibeann Duffy memorial blitz which was held on Saturday in Kilmoyley and hosted by Cillard Camogie Club.

The girls played fantastic camogie all day and battled all the way to the final whistle loosing narrowly to a very strong Causeway team. Well done to Nuala and all in Cillard Camogie Club for organising a fantastic tournament. 

Golf Classic

Tralee Parnells held its 2nd Golf Classic on Friday, 6th September in Beaufort Golf Club. Twenty six teams took part on the day and a very enjoyable day out was had by everyone.

The course was in superb condition and the weather conditions were very favourable. This led to some fine scoring by all the teams. When all the scores were added up the following were the results:

Congratulations to the Marcy Mounthawk Senior Camogie team on their victory over Presentation Tralee in the first round of the Kerry Colleges Hannah Scollard Cup! Tralee Parnells were well represented on the team.

Kerins O’Rahillys gaa Club News

County Championship: 

St Brendans, comprising ourselves, Austin Stacks, John  Mitchels, St Pats, Ardfert & Churchill proved too strong for a resolute South Kerry side in the opening round of the county senior football championship.

We were very well represented with 8 starters along with Austin Stacks, 5 with one player each from John Mitchels and Ardfert. 

In addition, Kerry U20 panelists Ben Hanafin and Darragh O’Connor were on the substitutes bench.

The game was a tame enough affair with both sides tied at the break on 0-05 each, Jack Savage contributing 4 points and David Moran with the first point from play – Jack’s third point was the pick of the bunch, a sweet strike off his left into the Mitchels end.

The second half saw St Brendans take greater control and ahead on 0-07 to 0-06, Tomás Kennedy fired a low shot goalwards and though saved, Jack was following up and found the net with a low drive to the corner.

Thereafter, St Brendans controlled the game and ran out worthy winners on a final score line of 1-16 to 0-13 – Jack contributed 1-06, Barry John 0-02, David Moran 0-01, Tomás Kennedy 0-01.

McElligott Cup: 

We made our exit from the Barrett Cup in Castleisland on Sunday when a last quarter capitulation saw Desmonds hit 1-06 without reply to run out convincing winners by 6 points, 1-17 to 2-08.

We were in control in the first half through the good play of Australia bound Seán Collins at centre back, Fenton Collins at midfield and Conor Hayes at centre forward; there was plenty to like about our forward play with good interpassing between Conor O’Sullivan, Sam McCarthy and Conor Hayes which resulted in two green flags courtesy of Gearóid Meehan and Conor O’Sullivan – Conor was unlucky to not add a third goal when his shot was saved on the line.

In defence our full back line of Stephen Nix, Rory Molloy and Sam Pituch stood out and yielded little to their opponents.

The second half began in similar fashion and by the mid way point, both sides had added 4 points each to leave us leading by 3 points, 2-08 to 0-11.

However, we began to tire as Desmonds introduced some fresh legs and were losing the important battles all over the pitch – Desmonds tacked on some fine scores and when their goal arrived, it spelled the end of our campaign.

It was a disappointing outcome in the end but we would like to wish Desmonds all the best as they progress to the semi finals. 

Today’s game signalled the end of Seán Collins in a Strand Road jersey for the foreseeable future as he departs for Perth on Tuesday – we would like to wish him a safe journey and every success in pastures new. 

Mark Fitzgerald: 

Mark announced on Friday last that he was stepping down as Clare senior bainisteoir to take up a position with Tomás O’Sé on the Kerry U20 team. We wish Mark all the best for 2025.

Juvenile Academy: 

Juvenile academy continued Sunday morning as usual for all age groups in attendance.  It was great to see such high numbers in attendance. Everyone enjoyed a fun filled session with their coaches while learning key skills as well.  

U11 Boys: 

U11 Boys

Our U11s made the journey across town to Connolly Park Thursday evening. Well done to both our teams who showed great skill, heart and determination in both games. Thanks to Austin Stacks for having us.  

U13 Boys: 

U13B Boys

Our U13 B team came up just a little short Sunday against a very high quality John Mitchels B team in the Central Region Division 7 Final on a score line of 3-14 to 2-08. The progress this group has made is their real achievement this year making a County League final and a Central Region final.  

We are super proud of you all;  just a mention for Aaron O Sullivan who was our top performer on the day and a special thanks to the five U11 players who have been a credit to the club all year.

Well done everyone. This wraps up our 2024 season for our B Team,  thanks to everyone for their dedication to training and games throughout the year and thank you to their parents and families for their continued support.    

Our U13 A team has a Town League Division 2 final next Sunday 22nd v Ardfert A and a Central Region Division 2 Final the following Sunday 29th September.  

Ladies Notes: 

U12 Girls:

U12 girls

Our u12s made the trip back to Rathmore Wednesday night for their last county league game. We fell behind in the first quarter but the girls came back out fighting with super work from our midfielders who fed the ball to our forwards and produced some fine finishing making it a very close game. Thanks to Rathmore for having us. 

The management team would like to take this opportunity in saying it has been a pleasure to work with some talented young footballers who gave their all week in week out.

It’s great to see how fantastic the girls have improved in every game with a fine winning streak for weeks on end. We are so proud of each and everyone one of them for giving us some great days out. We would also like to thank their parents and family members for their support on the sidelines for every game, it’s great to see and I’m sure the girls loved having you there.

It’s been an excellent 2024 for u12s girls 

U13 Girls: 

Our u13 girls played out a closely-fought and highly entertaining County Championship tie away to Rathmore on Sunday. Despite leading for most of the game, we eventually lost by a single point. Our girls can hold their heads up high though, having played so well throughout. Lexi Keane got some incredible goals, Hannah O’Sullivan had a brilliant game at wing back and Aisling Donnelly was outstanding at cornerback. 

Ava O’Donoghue had another fine game at corner forward and never stopped running until the final whistle, while Sophie Constable and Aoibhinn Corridon were as tenacious as always. Hard luck girls – but we are proud of every one of you for a great day’s performance, despite the result. Final score Rathmore 4-6, Kerins O’Rahillys 3-8

U14 Girls:

U14 KOR Girls

Our Kerins O’Rahillys U14 team played Annascaul/Castlegregory in the North Kerry League in Ballyrickard  Thursday evening. We were neck and neck with the West Kerry girls for much of the first half, but the superior scoring power of the visitors saw them win.  We extend our best wishes to Niamh Lynch for a speedy recovery, and hope to have Taylor Kate Leane back in the blue jersey before too long. Well done to all our players for fighting right up to the final whistle. Our next game is against Na Gaeil.

U15 Girls: 

We are away to Cromane in the U15s Championship Quarter Final;  throw in is at 6.30pm in Glenbeigh. All support is welcome.  

U16 Girls: 

U16 Girls

Well done to our U16 Girls who were at home in the North Kerry Final v Listowel Emmets Wednesday Evening. Fiadh McCarthy was the captain for the game.  It was a very challenging game with both teams hungry for the win. After a tough battle it ended in a draw,  3-5 to 2-8. Replay details to follow. 

They also celebrated Aoifes birthday at Training on Tuesday evening.  Happy Birthday Aoife.

Senior Men – The Junior team won a hard-fought battle in the quarter final of the Barrett Cup beating Glenbeigh/Glencar on a scoreline of 1 – 7 to 0 – 8.

Mitchels started the stronger with early points from Cian O’Brien and Darragh Cunnane (F).Glenbeigh stuck back with points of their own but a long range effort from Brian Costello, Conor Hurley, Cian and 2 points from Darragh (45, F) extended the lead to 0 – 7 to 0 – 2 at the half time break.

Mitchels played against the elements in the 2nd half and found scores hard to come by. Mitchels defended superably through the efforts of Rob Kerins, Aaron McLarnon, Graham Higgins and the very impressive Sam Fitzgerald in particular keeping the Glenbeigh scoring chances at a minimum.

Our midfield had a big impact on the game . Special mention for Conor Hurley who struck for the vital score of the game to leave Mitchels 1 – 7 to 0 – 5 to the good. Glenbeigh to their credit scored 3 unanswered points leading to a nervous last few minutes but Mitchels held out for a narrow 2 point victory.

Special mention most go to veteran goalkeeper Dermot Raggett who looked composed under the high ball and was able to get all kick outs away to a Mitchels man throughout the game.

We now look forward to the Barrett Cup Semi Final next weekend with more details to follow across our social media channels later in the week. 

Senior Ladies – Our Senior Ladies enjoyed their end of season gathering on Saturday night. A great night was had by all. A thanks from all of us in the club to the players and management for all their work and commitment in 2024. Our best wishes to Niamh Myers and Tara Fitzgerald on their international travels.  Good luck from all of us in the club. 

Mothers & Others Notes – Our Mothers and Others team had a very busy week, starting on Monday night, the team took on Laune Rangers in a friendly match at the Ballyseedy Complex. The teams were evenly matched and everyone had a great time. After the game, both teams gathered in our members lounge for refreshments and chats. Our Mothers and Others team also debuted their new jerseys. Stay tuned for more information on our fabulous sponsor! Then it was the Castleisland Desmond’s Blitz on Saturday where they were one of 7 teams. Thanks to Desmond’s for their hospitality, it was a very enjoyable afternoon.  If you’re looking for a way to get fit, make new friends, and have a laugh, come along! Minor Team – Our team are currently taking a well deserved break. We will be in contact in the next week or so on plans for the remainder of the year.  

Academy – Well done to all the boys and girls who played in a blitz on Sunday v Firies. Thanks to Firies for travelling to Ballyseedy. There was fun had by all and thanks to the players, parents and mentors for making the morning such a success. 

Under 9 Boys – John Mitchels U9 Boys put in another good session on Sunday Morning last. The boys worked on their fitness with some fun activities & then practiced their ball skills. There was also great excitement when our triumphant U14 boys fresh from winning the Lee Strand Invitational Blitz on the Saturday before came with the winning Cup for some photographs. Fantastic achievement well done to all involved. Training continues next Sunday morning for our U9s from 10.15am and we look forward to seeing you all then. 

Under 8s and 10s Girls – Great training and effort being put in by this group. Our Under 8 girls played Firies in a blitz on Sunday. Out Under 10 girls trained as normal. Keep up the great work and looking forward to seeing you all next Sunday. 

Under 12 and 13 Girls – John Mitchels Under 13s played Ballyduff on Sunday evening in the U13 County Championship and following a great performance are now through to the semi-final. Led by Captain Mairead Dowling  they won by 4 points. Well done to our girls and their management team for representing our club so well. 

Under 14 Girls – Our U14 Ladies had a fantastic victory over Moyvane away in the second round of the North Kerry League last Thursday evening. It was a great team performance and it puts us in to a very positive position in the table leading in to the last round of fixtures. We play our final north Kerry League game at home on Monday day evening at 7.

Under 16 Girls –  Our U16 ladies County league journey came to an end at the semi final stage against Dingle on Wednesday evening. The training and commitment shown from this group of girls over the past few months has been excellent and our girls played exceptional football to lose out in the end by a narrow margin. We are so proud of the girls who pulled on the John Mitchels jersey this season. Training began in February and we have been super competitive in every game that we have played. The focus now shifts to the U15 and U17 Championship.

Under 11 Boys – We trained as normal on Sunday and will do so again next Sunday at 10.30am We are due to play Milltown/Castlemaine in a friendly this Thursday in Milltown. Parents will be notified by WhatsApp about the details during the week.

Under 13 Boys – Massive congratulations to the team and mentors of the Under 13 Gold team in winning Division 7 of the Central League v Kerins O’Rahillys on Sunday evening. A tremendous performance by all involved with some excellent football on display by both teams. We play Austin Stacks next Sunday in the Div 1 Central League final in Na Gaeil. 

Champions of the Dinny O’Connor Lee Strand Invitational Tournament

Under 14 & 15 Boys – Well done to our u14 boys who won the prestigious Dinny O’Connor Lee Strand Invitational Tournament today in Connolly Park on Saturday. We started with a win against a tough Churchill this morning which was followed by another victory over Oranmore of Galway. This ensured we met a very strong Salthill Knocknacarra in the semi final.

Man of the Match for the final presented to Eamonn Kissane

It was another tough match for our boys but we prevailed to win by three in the end. The final against near neighbours and tournament hosts Austin Stacks was sure to be some game and it didn’t disappoint! This game had everything, long range scores tough tackling and accurate kicking football, which in fairness, is a testament to both teams as they really gave an exhibition.

Buoyed by a first half goal from Eddie we played some great football and at one stage went six points up. As expected this Stacks never gave up and got back into the game with some brilliant interceptions and turnovers of their own resulting in scores.

The last few minutes were tense but we pulled away working the ball nicely up the field (after some excellent defence) to our scoring forwards who kicked some great scores to ensure victory for Mitchels. Special mention to Captain Calvin O Sullivan who won Player of the Tournament and to Eamon Kissane who won Man of the match for the final. Well done boys.

Huge thanks to Austin Stacks for a brilliant game and of course hosting the event which went very smoothly from start to finish.Finally a huge congrats to our mentors who at short notice got the boys together for this tournament and to the parents who attended on the day. It was great to honour the team at the Club on Sunday where there was a massive turnout to wish the team and mentors our congratulations.

LOCAL ORGANISATIONS HONOURED AT KERRY COMMUNITY AWARDS

There was a standing ovation for south Kerry-based Cúnamh Iveragh CLG on Thursday night as the group was announced as overall winner at the 2024 Kerry Community Awards.

The night, which took place in the beautiful surroundings of The Rose Hotel in Tralee, was the 17th edition of the annual awards night. 

The aim of these awards is to recognise the work of the community and voluntary sector in improving the social, economic, cultural and environmental quality of life in local communities across Kerry. 

Cúnamh Iveragh, based in Cahersiveen, supports children and young adults with intellectual disabilities, as well as their families, providing care in a comfortable setting. The group conducts regular meetings where all parents and carers are encouraged to attend and get involved in decision making.

The group has progressed over the years. In 2013, it purchased an eight bedroom house in Cahersiveen, with one section of this house subsequently converted into a Day Centre. In 2022, work on a four bedroom respite house also began the site and this was officially opened last year.

Speaking on Thursday night following the announcement, secretary of the group Brendan Murphy expressed the group’s sheer joy – and shock – at their landmark win.

“It’s a complete surprise to us, I was totally delighted for the group and for all the people who’ve been involved down through the years.”

A special award for Best Community Start-Up was also presented to Phoenix Women’s Shed.  

Bill Morrell, Chairperson of the Planning Team for the Kerry Community Awards said the night would not be possible without the generous sponsors who continue to support the initiative.

Group Editor of The Kerryman and Chair of the Judging Panel, Kevin Hughes, said it was another special night with an equally special winner.

“We are delighted to have Cúnamh Iveragh overall winners, they are very deserving winners for the vision shown and the brilliant work that they do, much of it behind the scenes.

“These awards were first held in 2004 and 20 years later The Kerryman is very proud to have been involved from the beginning. While it all comes together on nights like these, the success of each awards night is down to a hard working Kerry Community Awards Committee and our judges who are experienced, balanced and fair.”  

20 community groups in total were presented with awards on the night with 10 groups receiving gold awards and 10 receiving silver.

PEIL FAOI 13/14/15: (i) A very successful Lee Strand Football U14 Tournament took place on Saturday last (14th) in Connolly Park. Some outstanding teams participated in the proceedings. Finalists: the Austin Stack Club and the John Mitchel Club. A great local derby! The Lee Strand final was won for the first time ever by Na Mistéalaigh who played very good football and were deserving victors. Promising for local football but very disappointment for our young Rockies! The Rock Club was represented by two teams….with nearly 40 boys involved.

Austin Stack Club Team 1: captain…David Ahern; squad…Oran O’Regan, Conor Maguire, Ryan O’Flaherty, Diarmuid Hennessy, Shea Horan, Mark Riordan, Alex O’Flaherty, Jayden O’Dowd, Michael Carmody, Liam Swords, Billy Kirby, Blake Bowler, Danny Lane, Noah Reidy, Conor Murphy, Tadhg Lucey, Oisín Horan, Kian Cronin. They played in Group A against An Ghaeltacht (AdeS 6-5; An Ghaeltacht 0-5) and Nemo Rangers (AdeS 3-3; Nemo Rangers 2-5).

They defeated Na Gaeil in the Cup semi-final (AdeS 5-7; Na Gaeil 2-2) and were beaten by Na Mistéalaigh in the Cup final (AdeS 0-7; John Michels 1-12).

All boys gave their best in true Rock fashion! We wish the best of luck to all for the rest of their seasons with the U13s and/or U15s. ‘Well done’ to all who were involved in the running of another very successful Lee Strand Tournament! It was so nice to see Nóra O’Connor, wife of the late Dinny O’Connor, and son, Denis Junior, presenting the Denis O’Connor/Lee Strand Cup to the winning captain, Calvin O’Sullivan. And a bit of Rock history from Adrienne: out of the 37 Lee Strand Tournaments that have taken place since 1986, Rock teams have won ten….a great record.

The years and team captains are as follows: 1986…Armin Heinrich whose son, Armin, is on the Kerry senior panel; 1987…Brian Shanahan, a lover of the ash and leather, who worked hard for many years promoting the ‘skilful game’ within our club; 1994…Conor Carroll; 1995…Andy McAllen (beannacht Dé dhilís lena anam); 1996…Martin Courtney who has served the club well; 1998…Stephen O’Mahony; 2003…Craig O’Hara; 2004…Fergal Maunsell; 2012…Robbie Murphy; 2016…Shane Bastible who still kicks the leather sphere.

(ii) ‘Well done’ to our U15 players who contributed significantly to the minor team’s County Championship efforts all the way to that truly spirited final performance v Bordcheantar Naomh Ciarán i Staid an Ghearaltaigh. Three of our U15s made the starting 15! Good experience gained in the county’s biggest stadium! Huge disappointment but setbacks improve character! They should be very proud of their efforts, commitments and achievements.

(iii) ‘Well done’ to our lads who gave of their almighty best on Wednesday September 18th in the U15 Central League Division 1 Final v Na Gaeil in Austin Stack Park. Another great effort and performance by our boys! (iv) We’re still hoping that a Town League will be held in the coming weeks. We’re hungry for more football as we head into the final stages of the season. (Ger Hobbert, Dan Ahern, Adrienne McLoughlin, Ed O’Regan)

MINORS: (i) ‘Well done’ to our minors who did us proud in the Keanes Supervalu Minor County Championship, only barely losing the final to St Kierans in Fitzgerald Stadium. These are our Rock minors who played superb football throughout the season, defeating several quite strong DIVISIONAL teams, and were only pipped in the county final by…..three seconds: Ryan O’Driscoll (capt), Oliver Lata, Eoin Mangan, Fionán Ryan, Aodhán Horgan, Jayden Moriarty, Gavin Casey, Darragh Lyons, Alex Tuohy, Ben Murphy, Rory Lynch, Ronan Carroll, Harry Murphy, Jack Diggin, Cormac Bastible, Jake Carmody, Jamie Casey, Ben Litchfield, Conor O’Regan, Adam Johnson, Leon Sweeney David Mullins, Jack Shanahan, Max Gryzbowski, Jayden O’Dowd, Gabriel Maszorak, Tadhg Falvey, Brian Kavanagh. Final score…AdeS: 1-13; St Kierans: 2-12. They were very unlucky in that final after another fine performance. Great effort, boys! But, remember, boys that you are deserving Kerry County CLUB Champions for 2024.

THE ROCK STILL IN THE RACE: Best wishes to our club senior team in their preparations for their replay on Sunday November 10th! Up The Rock! And ‘well done’ to the Naomh Breandán divisional team, with 9 Rockmen on board, in their victory over South Kerry.

GEARÁN: How come? Our national tv sports news mentioned and showed a ‘clip’ and an interview of only ONE county championship match in Ireland on Sunday night…hurling in Kilkenny…and showed several on across-the-water football! This seems usual practice from ár stáisiún náisiúnta! Shouldn’t we be shown many championship games played in IRELAND? Ca’il an mórtas cine?

NA MISTÉALAIGH: The Tralee John Mitchel Club was in existence in 1886, two years after the founding of the GAA. It is believed that the Club was founded in OAKPARK. Now! They won their first County Championship in 1897 (or rather shared it with Cathair Saidhbhín). They have won 10 senior football championships.

NA STACAIGH: We were founded in 1917. We are the ONLY club in Kerry to have won Senior County Championships in both hurling (4) and football (13), including doubles in 1928 and 1931.

PHOTOS: Kerry’s Indian Community Gathers To Celebrate Onam

MEMBERS of the Kerry Indian Association gathered once again at the hall in CBS Primary School on Saturday to celebrate Onam.

Onam, mainly celebrated on the south of India, is an annual Hindu cultural festival taking place from September 6 to September 15 and people from all over Kerry came to Tralee for the celebration.

KMHA’s Human Chain Challenge Returns To Strickeen Mountain

THE Kerry Ladies Footballers and Kerry Mental Health Association have launched the second annual Human Chain Challenge on Strickeen Mountain in the Gap of Dunloe on Sunday, October 6.

The All-Ireland Football Champions are encouraging mothers and others, which may include fathers, brothers, sons and daughters, to take part in what is sure to be a fun free event for all the family.

The Human Chain Challenge will provide an opportunity for everyone to make a colourful show of support for people with mental health challenges, their families and carers in Kerry.

The General Manager of Kerry Mental Health Association, John Drummey, said: “The event fulfils each aim of the Five Ways To Wellbeing – Connect | Be Active | Take Notice | Keep Learning | Give.

“We are delighted to have the All-Ireland Ladies Football Champions on board and we are inviting other community groups from around Kerry to join us in making the Human Chain Challenge. Kerry Mental Health Association is grateful to the local landowners and the MacGillycuddy Reeks Access Forum for facilitating the event again this year. This year’s event has been kindly sponsored by Kate Kearney’s Cottage in the Gap of Dunloe.”

As the land is privately owned, advance registration is necessary at Human Chain Challenge On Strickeen Mountain – Kerry Mental Health & Wellbeing Fest (www.kerrymentalhealthandwellbeingfest.com).

Every walker will receive a free bright KMHA-branded bandana to be worn for the Official Human Chain Challenge Drone picture which will be taken at the first stage of the ascent.

The registered walkers will need to wear appropriate clothing and footwear, children must be accompanied by responsible adults and dogs are not permitted. Car-pooling is also recommended as limited parking spaces will be available.

In the interest of safety, Kerry Mountain Rescue will be on 24-hour call and the Killarney Order of Malta will be on site at the foot of the mountain to provide First Aid assistance if required.

Kerry Mental Health Association supports the Leave No Trace campaign and will be encouraging all participants to leave Strickeen Mountain in the spotless condition that they found it.

The Human Chain Challenge at Strickeen on Sunday 6th October will be preceded by the annual #TieDayFriday Fundraising event on Friday 4th October – both taking place to coincide with World Mental Health Day on 10th October.

Castlegregory Celebrates Achievements Of Young Medal Winners

THE community of Castlegregory came together for an inspiring afternoon of celebration and recognition at the Castlegregory Community Games Recognition and Awards Day held on Sunday.

The event was a huge success in celebrating the talent and achievements of local youth in various Community Games events.

This year’s celebration highlighted the talents showcased by under 16 participants across a range of disciplines including cross-country running, athletics, quiz, swimming, music, gymnastics, cycling on grass, pitch and putt, projects, art, tag rugby, futsal, chess, and handwriting.

Among the stand out performers were two young athletes Evie and Ryan Fields who each earned five county medals and a national medal.

Maeve Wallace received a national silver medal as part of the Kerry Cross country team and the Castlegregory U13 girls swimming relay won a bronze medal representing Kerry (Evie Fields, Grainne Dowd, Charlie Blennerhasset, Aoibhin Long, Aine Mibach Ahern and Maeve Wallace).

A special mention goes to the u13 girls Futsal team who represented Kerry in the Munster final.

On hand on the day to present the awards were Eimear Dineen, current Kerry Rose and Ciara Butler Kerry County GAA player and both past Castlegregory Community games participants.

The event was a fun-filled occasion with a great sense of community shared by the inspiring local recipients and a chance for the community to come together and celebrate the young talents.
